Hi all:

I've just seen ads locally for a couple of DVD players that look like promising upgrades to my generic Sony CDP. One is a Sony DVP-S7000, the other is a Yamaha DVC-6761. Any opinions of either of these as CD players? The Sony has a great reputation (from reading older Audioreview posts) but the Yamaha also plays SACD, which would be fun to get into, but I can't find much info on the Yammie. Any advice? I'd be listening in 2-channel mode exclusively, and for the time being at least using the built-in DACS.

Thanks

Roy

I have the Sony DVP-S900ES and I like it alot. One huge drawback is this one does NOT read pc burned cd's. SACD and CD quality on playback is pretty darn good.

I just brought the DVPS7000 home and it's playing right now, a PC-burned copy of "Brubeck in Japan". Sounds fabulous, very airy and detailed with great imaging. Doesn't do SACD, of course, which would be fun but for now I'm happy to have a MUCH improved Redbook player. It's replacing a Sony CDP-445 changer which, in comparison, sounds like a boombox.

This thing is twice as heavy as the changer, in mint condition, and very swank with its motorized door that covers the disc tray. There are tons of mods that can be done to the audio section, apparently, and I'm going to look into modding it one of these days. For now I'm a happy listener!

Heck, I use my LaserDisc player as my day to day CDP. With it's crazy 1-bit DAC too.

A Sony DVP-S7000 or 7700 is great as a cd player or transport, especially at the current give a way prices.

shhh, vince! i sniped a s7000 for $0.99 plus $25 shipping and was happy as a lark, then the seller (who was brand new, granted) turns around and says he's very disorganized from moving and doesn't know when he's going to be able to ship it.....so he's not going to ship it. that was definitely the highlight of my day. at least i got a refund.

I have a Denon DVD-5910. Not as good as my Sony SCD777es.

I picked up a Denon DVD-3800 that will play everything but SACD. It's built like a tank and has a very sweet sounding DAC. They can be had on ebay for a decent price.

What I like about the Denon is having the ability to play DVD's in an audio only capacity... I have a good sized collection of concert DVDs and sometimes I throw one in just to listen to.

I agree those S7000's are super and are down right a steal from their $1,000 price new....

I sold my MINT condition S7700 for $150 a year ago. What a mistake.

I found that the Denon (DVD-5910) transport is loud when compared to Sony.

I still use (among a few others ) my Pioneer Dvl-919, as it does have a 96k/24bit Audio DAC. Thought It is rather frustrating when I hit the wrong eject and the whole LD tray slides out instead of the CD/DVD tray.

Quote: "Is that a Record Player????"

Though in comparrison to modern CD/DVD players, I cant really say as I havent used many that were above basic..

I would be curious if anyone else has any info on using this as a CD player...
