View Full Version : NOS eye tube not closing

I have a allied 333 stereo receiver that had a dim OE eye tube, open and close fine, just dim. It was branded as a TOYO 6E5. I bought a NOS JAN 6E5, very bright but does not close as much. I was wondering if anyone had the same experience?. The grid voltage at full close with the OE tube was about 3.0v IIRC. I am sure the NOS is a 6E5 and not one of the lower gain subs.

Seems that full close is anywhere from -3.3v to -8v depending on the plate and target voltage

Possible this particular tube needs a smidge more AGC action to get to full close. Also, you may wish to check the 1M resistor thats usually in the tube socket to see if it has drifted off value.

Thanks I will check it out.

I don't know if this tube is the same as a vintage radio tube but they are often prone to the 1 meg resistor on the tube socket of the eye tube going up in value. If your tube socket has a 1 meg resistor, might be a good thing to replace it. However, this receiver is much newer than the radios I am referring to.

I have not done much to my Allied 333 other than play it. It still works well with original components. It is a little down the list of amplifiers and receivers in queue for restoration. May actually never get there!

I did notice one thing on my 333. The eye tube tends to start having a darkness creeping across the light green from both sides as it operates for a few hours. Kinda like water creeping across a piece of paper when it is getting wet. Strange!

very possible this radio needs a good alignment. eye tubes are very sensitive to the target voltage based on the quality of the rf.

But the original tube, though dim, worked fine. Sounds like a difference in manufacture unless something happened while changing the tube, like the 1 meg resistor, if it has one...

what is the original eye tube and what is the one you put in and what does the parts list call for?

The fist post I think answers these questions...

did not answer what the parts list calls for.

In old radios there is a 1 meg resistor inside the socket (I forget which pins). They tend to either open or increase in resistance causing the problem you are having.

If you have a schematic of the receiver, see if the resistor is indeed in the socket.

resistor in socket, checked 1 meg, so good there. Schematic calls out a 6E5.

The difference in closure is not extreme, my plan is to go back to my source (local) and see if he has any other eye's that more closely match the performance of the original. Thing is I have noticed that there is a local channel that will just about completly close it (actually over closed the OE tube a tiny bit) so the problem really is not a problem since the new tube did not over close. My guess is the TOYO brand just has a little better gain than the NOS JAN tube I replace it with.

Seems like I remember reading that those eye tubes were kinda finicky anyway...You may have just gotten a "bad" one, or at least one that, for WHATEVER reason, doesn't "like" yr set..
