View Full Version : Pioneer SX-1250
JRCookie 03-10-2009, 09:18 AM Hey all,
I came across a strange picture of a 1250 which had a beige/cream colored top grill (pictures below). I couldn't find any information out there on whether this a known production series or if somebody painted this specific one. Anyway the rest of it looks normal and it doesn't seem to have a voltage selector on the back so it looks like a US only version.
Thought it was worth finding out if there was anything special about it!

ZeroJunk 03-10-2009, 09:20 AM Mine is similar, maybe a little darker brown. I thought they were all brown, but mine is the only one I've actually seen.

That's what I was thinking also, but if you look at the caution label it's turned180 deg. so it faces to the rear to read. Mine faces to the front.
audiojones 03-11-2009, 07:37 AM On mine the grill and the heat sinks are both a medium dark brown - those heat sinks look black...maybe painted? I think the grill color is just because of the lighting.

The sticker on mine faces the rear. I am the second owner of mine, which I acquired in the early to mid 1980's. It would not be surprising if different people on the assembly line put them on differenty, or if a machine did it, the stickers may not have always been loaded with the same orientation. Or it could be that Pioneer changed their minds about how it should be oriented at some point.
I think the receiver in the picture is stock.

I don't think I have ever seen one with dark brown heat sinks; all of them (that I can remember) have been black.
Is anyone here the original owner of an SX-1250 that you still have?
In my case, I am the second owner of my SX-1250, and since I got mine in the early to mid 1980's in great condition, it is highly doubtful that anyone ever repainted the heatsinks.
Regardless, I would not be shocked if Pioneer used a different color paint on some. Perhaps Dr. Strangelove knows the answer to this, as he seems to know an incredible amount of obscure information about the production of old Pioneer equipment.
OldSkool 03-11-2009, 12:19 PM To me that appears to be an untouched, all-original SX-1250.

I pulled my 1250 off the shelf when I got home from work today and wouldn't you know - brown grill, black heatsinks :sigh: I could've sworn that the sinks were brown, don't know why. I guess it's been too long since I've opened 'er up and really paid attention to anything other than that beautiful front half. It seems to me that it would've looked better with a black grill rather than a brown one, but I'm not painting anything.
Sorry for the confusion :D I guess they're all the same!

No worries. Memory is like that, which is why in my post asking if there were any original owners of an SX-1250 who still had it, because going from memory isn't reliable. In my case, I have my SX-1250 on top of an audio stand that is a bit taller than waist high, with nothing immediately on either side, so it is easy to see the beautiful walnut cabinet and the heat sinks. It looks so good, why hide it? (I mean that rhetorically, as I know, necessity in a particular situation could cause one to hide it.)
pioneervato 03-12-2009, 02:04 PM That looks like a stock 1250. The grill looks a little lighter but lighting can play into how color is perceived through the camera or through any adjustments made to the digital image.
