View Full Version : 45s, anyone???
Andyman 03-10-2009, 07:26 PM I've got a bunch here I scrounged and wonder what you guys think of them?
FWIW, I just played "Respect" by Aretha on Atlantic and it sounds pretty darn good.
Next up Wild Thing". "The In Crowd", "Funky Broadway" and "Oh Pretty woman".
And there's also "Secret Agent Man", "Hurdy Gurdy Man", and some dylan and Beatles to be checking out...
Jovinyl 03-10-2009, 08:07 PM Got em'. Now and then I play some. Not that often, though I have a TT set up for that purpose. What I did like is the older 45's, some look tore up but with a cleaning they play quiet.
Dave1384 03-10-2009, 10:12 PM Yup. Once had 5000. Down to about One... half 60/70's country and the other, older Top Forty.
pjsjr 03-10-2009, 10:58 PM 45s, anyone???
I like them especially when followed by ACP or Long Colt:D.
I do have some of both...what your talking about I'm setting up a dedicated system for the record type.
They are difficult to find in good listening condition. Preston
AnalogDigit 03-11-2009, 01:43 AM I like to drag mine out once in a while and put them on my changer and crank them up. I got a good mix of 50's through the 70's rock and roll with some country thrown in.
spideyjack 03-11-2009, 05:31 AM Man, I love 45's. I lsten to them all the time. I'm too lazy to count them but I have a bunch and always seem to find more!
Started collecting 'em when I was five. 45's many times have alternate mixes or edits from the album versions and it was common for them to have non-album tracks on the b-side!
illinoisteve 03-11-2009, 09:37 AM I never bought a lot of 45s. The first one I ever got I think was by the Rascals. I do remember getting Hey Jude on 45 the first week you could buy it; that was the only format it was on for years.
I might be wrong, or it could be a false impression based on the lousy equipment I had back then, but for a long time I had the impression that the version of a song put on a 45 was mixed differently--as if it was put down in a way that got the most bass and percussion out of a jukebox. In those days, there might have been more 45s in jukeboxes than people actually bought. They sounded way out of balance played on home equipment, or some of them did.
It's funny, though, I recently started looking through 45s when I find them at thrift shops. I'm not looking for worn-out rock (which I probably have on LP if I like it), but stuff like early 50s Crosby, Clooney, Bennet, Peggy Lee.... They are hard to find. You have to look through a lot of "Crystal Gail" and "ABBA" to find them. Makes me kinda want to wash my hands right away.
You're right Steve. Many labels mixed 45's to sound their best on radio. They wanted the songs to stand out so it would entice listeners to go out and buy them. The mono Byrds singles are far superior to the album versions.

yep, and mono Who singles are really amazing!
KeninDC 03-11-2009, 12:43 PM I'm limiting my comments to 7" 45s:
Ditto on the many mono 45 mixes.
I also dig the occasional instrumental B-sides.
I have a host of funk 45s from the 70s (Jimmy Castor, Hot Chocolate) that are quite fun. I play them for the kids.
If you are looking for the best sounding version of Led Zeppelin's "Hey, Hey What Can I Do," the 45 version on the flip side to "Immigrant Song" sounds stunning at 45 RPM.

Jack Lord 03-11-2009, 02:01 PM I grab 45s fairly often, especially picture sleeves. I would like eventually to amass all the Beatles US picture sleeves- I am about 7 into it so its gonna take some time. Maybe move on to the UK ones after that.
I am also trying to gather most of the pic sleeves from the Jam and the Beach Boys.
I would go for all the ones by the Stones, but then I would be bidding against KeninDC all the time ("The B side of the Ruby Tuesday mono mix released in Algeria has a version of Let's Spend the Night Together with an extra guitar note!!!!")
similost 03-11-2009, 02:04 PM I've only got 2 of the 7" 45's.. most of mine are all 12", and even then you have to change them too fast.

Stones trivia is my form of mental "play." My sister's Stones collection (now mine) contained almost all the early Stones singles not available on LP.
The "Street Fighting Man" 45 with the picture sleeve of a riot is perhaps the most expensive picture sleeve of the Stones. I do not have it and i understand it is quite often counterfeited.
Your classic Stones picture sleeve is "Jumping Jack Flash" b/w "Child of the Moon." In mono, it is a one two punch...
jlc76 03-11-2009, 02:44 PM Jack Lord,
Speaking of the Jam, do you ever run across That's Entertainment with a large center hole? I have seen tons of th UK pressing with small hole but I would really like that song for my jukebox. I am also looking for Joy Division "Love Will Tear Us Apart" with a large hole. Unfortunately I love that late 70's UK stuff but most was small hole (I have quite a few Gang of Four and Buzzcocks singles that are awesome but will never be playable in my jukebox).
BigManAndy 03-11-2009, 02:55 PM I never got into 7" records too much, i can't call them 45 since i have 7" records pressed at 45 and 33.3 RPMs. hell i got one 7" with 13 tracks on it!! haha most of mine are rare/limited runs of punk and punk/ska bands on wacky colors and pic disks. mainly for collecting reasons only, there rarely played. got a few 5" records too. funny seeing those little guys spinning.

Don't have That's Entertainment. Mine are all UK 45s- EPs actually and none have the big hole, which I think was an American thing anyway.
But...my college haunt had a great jukebox with 45s. They had several Jam EPs and I know they were EPs because you got two plays instead of one as it played both songs on one side. So that box was capable of playing both.
There are lots of That's Entertainment singles on eBay. If it was released in the States, and I think it was, it should have the large hole.
Urchinn 03-11-2009, 03:03 PM I have a jukebox and when I encounter those small hole imports I just cut out a larger hole with an exacto knife. Not the easiest way to do it...but it never fails. That being said, I have both Joy Division and The Jam on my jukebox (and Captain Beefheart, Francoise Hardy, and The Remains). In short: you sound like a superior fellow!
Drybasement 03-11-2009, 03:24 PM I still have every 7" 45 rpm single I ever purchased. All of them were purchased in the mid to late 70's. About 125 of them. My only regret is that I threw away every sleeve they came in and some of those were picture sleeves. Looking at that collection today, there's some pretty good music in there. Quite a few "one hit wonder" type bands/artists (some of it obscure), some disco, some Beatles, Stones, ELO, ect...and a few "wtf were you thinking" type stuff. :D Those were the real early purchases. I'm sure glad my musical palette changed.
Cheers
Dave1384 03-11-2009, 10:35 PM Anyone know why" Stairway to Heaven" wasn't on 45? I have never seen a copy, but I thought I read somewhere radio staions had em'....
