View Full Version : Jerry Garcia solo and projects
ScramMan2 03-11-2009, 07:58 PM You guys know that Jerry Garcia was the leader of the Dead. When he was on, the band was on.
He had so many solo and side project interests, from bluegrass to jazz.
I was digging in the archives tonight. I have a Rhino reissue CD, in HDCD, going now.
Legion of Mary. From the Jerry Garcia collection, Vol 1. It was Jerry's jazz outlet. Strong Hammond B3 riffs, and Martin Fiero's sax. Merl Saunders was on the B3. Both Merl and Martin have passed on in the last year or so. Incredible musicians.
They do a lot of different "standards". Nothing at all like the Dead would do.
You jazz guys may want to check this out.
golana 03-11-2009, 08:16 PM Nice, I'll be sure to check that out.
Huge fan of " Old and In the Way", and all his stuff with David Grisman.
just a natural musician who crossed genres effortlessly, and made cool ties
ScramMan2 03-11-2009, 08:21 PM Oh me too. Love the stuff with David Grisman. Pizza tapes. Tony Rice! I have met Tony, on one of the Jam Cruises.
I have a few Jerry ties also. From back "in the day" I get to wear jeans now.
pjsjr 03-11-2009, 08:32 PM Scram, thanks for the insight, I check it out...
I have 'The Pizza Tapes', CD, Jerry Garcia, David Grisman and Tony Rice.
A two night, sort of impromptu jam session that was recorded/stolen and then released by Grisman/Dawg Productions.
Not jazz, sorry, mostly folk, but shows the depth of Gracia along with Grisman and Rice. Has some 'colorful language'(dirty) 'cause sone of the dialogue was recorded to show the rapport between these musicians.
The vocals by Garcia are moving especially when he does 'Amazing Grace'
I see my slow typing has me behind, again! Preston
Andyman 03-11-2009, 08:35 PM I've got a bunch of Jerry solo stuff. Some JGB stuff including a live 2 CD set, "Old and in the Way, plus a couple of the Keystone recordings with Merl Saunders.
Yeah, I've got a couple ties too....
zenith2134 03-11-2009, 08:39 PM Right now, I hold in my hand an original LP of "Garcia" which of course is Jerry with Hunter and Keutzmann. Got this record from my pops. And what a record it is. :music:
mhardy6647 03-11-2009, 09:36 PM I have one of the Keystone performances with Merl Saunders that I've never listened to.
Garcia and Grisman's Not for Kids Only is excellent, well recorded, and somewhat elegiac (to my mind) -- it had to be one of the last things the Jer Bear recorded and released while he was still around.

Classic!
albowlly 03-11-2009, 10:28 PM Live at Keystone is a great album. You must give it a listen. Another worthy Saunders/ Garcia album is Heavy Turbulence.
Tom
klama2006 03-11-2009, 10:39 PM I'm mainly a jazz guy, and also thoroughly enjoy Jerry. I need to get more of his stuff.
MarkD 03-12-2009, 01:05 AM Another great Garcia/Saunders album is Fire Up.
Danimal 03-12-2009, 01:26 AM Absolutely love the Grisman stuff
Brett a 03-12-2009, 07:03 AM I'd recommend checking out Devout Catalyst. A 1991 spoken word album by Ken Nordine with Jerry and David Grisman providing backdrop along with Howard Levy (a founding member of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones), Joe Craven and Jim Kerwin (both from Grisman's band), plus a cameo on two tracks by Tom Waits!

I am pretty sure there are two Keystone albums.

There is an expanded version of this album in the Jerry Garcia CD box set, with outtakes.
I have no life. LMAO.
Brett a 03-12-2009, 09:27 AM I am pretty sure there are two Keystone albums.
Plus "Keystone Encores" makes 3 original releases. More may have been released since the 80's--I'm not sure.

We are both wrong. I was just on AMG, and counted 7 Keystone releases between Jerry Garcia and Merl Saunders.

Damn.
finnbow 03-12-2009, 10:48 AM Maybe a little out of genre but JG nonetheless. I spun up the first New Riders of the Purple Sage album last night and this album reminded me of why I used to feel that this may be one the finest examples of JG's pedal steel (or anyone else's) around. A true pleasure to listen to.

JG also played pedal steel on Brewer & Shipleys "One Tok Over The Line". Dig that out of your archives and give it a listen.
zappafan2 03-18-2009, 07:05 PM The Jerry Garcia trust also released some live Jerry Called Pure Jerry, you need to check out Keystone Sept. 1, 1974. It was Jerry, Merl,John Kahn,Martin Fierro, and Paul Humphrey. A killer 3cd set that was available through the website which is no longer running I see. If anyone decides they would like to have this set pm me , I do not have a problem getting you a copy of this show.
ScramMan2 03-22-2009, 01:32 PM I have a few of the Pure Jerry releases. The LOM show is one of them.
They are all sold on the JG website. Sometimes you can pick them up off SecondSpin.com.

This is common knowledge among die hard Jerry Garcia/Grateful Dead fans. Many Dead fans have no idea all of the different types music that Jerry was into. Great post! :thmbsp:

don20032004 03-22-2009, 06:29 PM Nice discussion  :lurk:
I'll have to check out some of these albums.
SpeakerLabFan 03-22-2009, 10:14 PM JG also played pedal steel on Brewer & Shipleys "One Tok Over The Line". Dig that out of your archives and give it a listen.
Wow, very cool didn't know that he played on that, will have to pull out that LP. Almost as cool as the Lawrence Welk singers performance (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ye3ecDYxOkg)of that song. :D
Jerry also played pedal steel on CSN's Teach Your Children.from wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teach_Your_Children):
The recording features Jerry Garcia on pedal steel guitar, probably the first time that Garcia recorded with that instrument
I've read that he was all over JA's Surrealistic Pillow although uncredited except as "spirtual advisor" :smoke:, including coming up that classic album's title.
sandoz 03-22-2009, 10:51 PM After Midnight and Don't Let Go are two excellent choices........ Depends on your mood! I have pretty much all of Jerry's non-dead releases plus almost a hundred bootlegs. Every time period in Jerry's repertoire can be linked to a listening state I need. From motown to rock to ??????........ Jerry loved so many different styles that his catalog is a virtual treasure trove!
albowlly 03-22-2009, 10:56 PM This is the Live At Keystone version that I have. Well worn cover but the vinyl is excellent.

You nailed it. The intent of the OP.
ScramMan2 03-23-2009, 12:35 AM The Garcia album from the CD box set really has a scary alternative take on Late for supper/spidergawd/eep hour. With all the counting mid-stream. Whew.
sandoz 03-23-2009, 05:03 PM A new Pure Jerry pre-order was just released today! Along with a new road trips from 68.........

zappafan2 03-24-2009, 11:26 AM Just checked my email this morning and found this from dead.net, ordered both sets and am glad to see the pure jerry releases back on track. I am really lloking forward to hearing the 68 stuff and how can you go wrong with acoustic Jerry. He was not in good health at this time but on the free Bird Song Stream it sounds good to me,what else do I have to spend $15 on:D
