It's mostly songs I like to have but don't want the albums they are on. I guess that's the whole reason these comps exist though, isn't it?

Side One
Cars - Gary Numan
Brass In Pocket - The Pretenders
Driver's Seat - Sniff & The Tears
Cruel To Be Kind - Nick Lowe
Is She Really Going Out With Him - Joe Jackson
Heartbreaker - Pat Benatar
Call Me - Blondie

Side Two
Do You Remember Rock 'n Roll Radio - Ramones
My Sharona - The Knack
I Want You To Want Me - Cheap Trick
Hold On - Ian Gomm
One Way Or Another - Blondie
We Live For Love - Pat Benatar
Pop Muzik - M

I got Rock 80 and Gary Numan Pleasure Principle in 1980 when I was 8. They changed my life I guess...I still have both records

I got this K-tel when it came out in 1980 also. I was 13. It's the copy I still own-in spite of my efforts to sell it at many yard sales.

Not K-tel, but the Kinks "20 Golden Greats" on Ronco is my fave of these sorts.

I have a box of probably 150 K-Tel and Ronco LPs in the garage, accumulated from the purchase of various collections. I always thought the sound quality of these compilations was severely lacking. As a result, I have never even looked at the quality of the vinyl contained within the sleeves. If there is any interest, I'll drag these out and bring them to the Fest for anyone who might want them.

I have close to 100 K-Tel and Ronco LPs. California Sun was the first one I ever bought, more than 30 years ago, and it still gets a play now and then.

I'd say Disco Fire (the 2 lp set) with the disco dance instructions for the "Hot Chocolate" but who the heck did that dance at the discos...or any of the mid 70s-80's comps...

Easy answer: K-Tel's "The Hit Machine" featuring that ole chestnut 'Disco Duck'. A friend received it for Christmas in 1975 and taped it for me by holding a microphone up to the speakers (iPod kids and other downloaders take note). Such was hi fi for a couple of 5th graders.

I still have the tape and I have procured a pretty good LP copy at a thrift as well.

I still have a tape with "Disco Duck" made using the same method!
Think it was from a 45 though, not a K-Tel comp.

Great Thread...everyone knows the music world is nothing without K-tel

My first rock album ever...K-tel "Stars.." Thanks for the pic, MJSNet! I think I may still have it, too :music:

Side One:
The Things We Do For Love - 10cc
Rich Girl - Hall & Oates
Year of the Cat - Al Stewart
Torn Between Two Lovers - Mary MacGregor
A Little Bit More - Dr. Hook
Love Me - Yvonne Elliman
So In To You - Atlanta Rhythm Section
Devil Woman - Cliff Richard
Slow Dancin' Don't Turn Me On - Addrisi Brothers

Side Two:
I'm Your Boogie Man - K.C. & The Sunshine Band
Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel (Pt. One) - Tavares
Don't Leave Me This Way - Thelma Houston
Cool Town - Stanky Brown Group
The World Is A Ghetto - War
Theme from "Roots" - Quincy Jones
Hard Luck Woman - Kiss
Tryin' To Love Two - William Bell
Couldn't Get It Right - Climax Blues Band

So that's why I like Al Stewart!

I worked with a guy who was the keeper of all the K-Tel master tapes. One big vault.

Last time I checked K-Tel was no longer a tenant in a building close to Audio Research here in Minneapolis.

I've always thought that the K-tel Canadian counterparts were better pressed and sounded better than their American counterparts...anyone else agree...Except in the late 70's and 80's the K-tel American Pressings got better as they didn't squeeze 11 tracks onto one side and did 6 or 7 per side...
