Hi I'm an avid collector of vinyl, its just in my blood. I tell myself I have to cut back and even just stop for a little while but who am I kidding, after all whats 'one more? I go as far as making lists of LP's to find and in what preference to get them, as in my next top 4 to get and of course the excuse is I have to have them, it just wouldn't be a collection without them in it. I will even buy LP's that I,ve never heard of purely on the recomendation of The Rolling Stone Magazine:yes:

Am I alone or are there others out there just like me with the need to get more vinyl?

Thanks Daza:music:

You're not alone, brother. It's my drug of choice.

There are worse hobbies to have. At least, that's what I tell the Mrs.

Addiction is a strong word. I do enjoy vinyl immensely. I enjoy finding the lost treasures of my youth. I enjoy the chase. I enjoy hearing something that I haven't heard in 20-30 years when I find something obscure. I enjoy the whole ritual of vinyl. I like watching the big heavy platter spin, and the shiny chrome arm and quality machined aluminum pieces do their job. I enjoy basking in the soft glow of the strobe light. I don't think that's a bad thing...

Now if I start trading flesh for records, that's an addiction. And not likely to get me much more than a few scratchy Herb Alperts.

Here's an answer I learned somewhere in my travels:

"I can quit anytime I want to, I just don't want to".

Seriously, collecting and care & maintenace offers some of the best mental relaxation/therapy second only to listening.

I have just got back into vinyl but I am a music junkie, I can not imagine a day going by without my music. My wife makes fun of me sometimes by saying how much I listen to music and how much time I spend surfing the net looking at stereo equipment and forums, but her friends say at least she knows where I am at and I could be spending time at bars and doing who knows what!:D

Also as opposed to addictions like say cocaine, you actually can do it over and over, and its still there. If you withdraw just play it again. If you gain a tollerance to a band or genre' just listen to something else for a while. The main thing is the fact that THE MAN wont kick your door in, sieze your collection, and drag you out to the squad car in your underwear at 4:00 in the morning in front of your neighbors.

THAT IS unless you posess any of the 60's counterculture/and modern death/white power metal stuff that is on the U.S. Patriot Act's list of illegal vinyl that has been deemed subversive, and a threat to national security. I really hate to let go of my Country Joe & The Fish stuff, but I'm not taking any chances....:scratch2:

Gimme an F, gimme a U, gimme a C...............:D

There was some spinning goin' on at my house last night, and my wife requested a couple of her favorites. On went ELO "Out Of The Blue" and Level 42 "World Machine". She then said: "I get it. I FINALLY get it! SO much better than a CD...So much! I'll never complain about the record rack, the cleaning process...just play 'em for me!" Sweeeet! Can't wait for garage sale season, either.

I am not addicted yet, but I am getting there.

My vinyl sat in boxes for years and now it's back out again, and I am at the used record store more then I am buying CD's.

I think that's a sign I am on my way.

Nothing wrong with that. Vinyl is better. Period. Besides, cds can't compete with artwork in LP albums. And the stylus tracking the grooves, oh, that's audio nirvana... :music:

Guilty...after many years of neglecting vinyl and buying CDs I am now ripping my CDs to FLAC and trading them in to buy vinyl copies. That way I still have the convenience of digital for parties and in the car but have the quality that is vinyl for when I am wanting to do some serious listening.

I am NOT a vinylholic.

I can stop whenever I want to.

I stopped once back in the 80's.

I stopped once in the 90's.

Now that I have proven I can stop anytime I want, I just choose not to.

It's not like I shop for vinyl everyday.

I am sorry everyone else is having an issue; but, I don't have a problem.

I'm not addicted.

And to prove it, I'm only going to buy a few records this weekend... and, I'm not even going to listen to them... right away.

I am NOT a vinylholic.

Vinyl is such a beautiful medium.
It gives the magic visual affect to the music.
The sound is superb.
I love looking in second hand shops for some old vinyls, just to get the original which I maybe recorded 25 years ago from the radio.

Also great to see that new vinyl is being produced and turntables are reappearing in shops.

Nothing is more boring than a disc which dissapears in a machine and you can't see anything working.

I may have had a 15 year vinyl break while looking for a new stylus.

The only complaint that I have is that I tend to take pride in NOT having to rush out and buy the latest, trendy, toy that I am supposed to buy because everyone else has one. Vinyl has kept me kind of safe for years now, as it simply couldn't be replaced, short of buying another used copy somewhere. NOW its in stores again, AND its either 180gram, or COLORED wax. I must say I am glad the selection is limited, so far..

I just don't have the money to start getting "collector quality 180gram" replacement records. I thought I was a collector until I saw that there is a needed weight for some kind of superior sound quality. Will I need a $500 needle cartridge to get the real deal in 180gram sound?

I did actually hold a 180gram picture disc in my hand and you can certainly tell that, well.., it's heavier. It really felt rigid to me, sort of like an old 78rpm that would break like glass.

Now, I do like colored vinyl. I saw Black Sabbath "Paranoid" pressed in colored vinyl. I jokingly told the store attendant that, with my luck, the supposedly colored vinyl would be BLACK for Black Sabbath. That would suck!!

Hi, I'm Andy and I'm addicted to vinyl.

hifitommy
05-02-2009, 03:27 PM
but truly its more the music than vinyl of which i have about 5000. probably 2000 or more CDs, over 100 SACDs. open reel tape, cassettes, and tuners.

the sound of LPs is more convincing of the real thing. and it amazes me that even with different cartridges, each with their own sound, that vinyl always sounds more real to me than most digital. i will give credence to sacd and dvda but rbcd not so much.

BUT much music just inst available on LP so i must obtain it whatever way i can. plus, the car has a cdp and many times thats where i want to hear music as i spend 30-45 minutes driving each way to work and radio reception isnt always the best, even in LA.

sirius and xm dont interest me as they are far removed from the real world. kkjz (88.1) in the LA area comes in good in most areas but there are exceptions. mostly its what i listen to on radio with the exception of 100.3 the sound and kcrw. kxlu is an occasional choice.

used vinyl is abundant here in LA but new vinyl is also availble and many times i buy from towerrecords.com. i am trying to get them to improve their mailing packaging so my records dont arrive with bent corners. recent acquisitions include raising sand, diana krall-quiet nights, and boz scaggs-speak low-a jazz release like his cd-but beautiful. good stuff.

i am listening now to don sebesky-giant box-and taking the time travel trip back to old CTI sound and style. not bad for two bucks.

with about 4 TTs in the house and several cartridges mounted for swapping in the sota/mmt setup, i would say an addiction exists. the mountains of CDs, SACDs, and LPs around suggest its a music one with a leaning toward vinyl.

BobHol

Saw an adequate TT on e-bay that was being ignored. How could this be. So I put in the minimum bid of $40, and darn if I didn't win it. Sent a stern message to the seller about packing.
This could be my new number 2 table out of 5. Then someone on my local CL is selling 200 lps for $45. Not today to busy listening to music with the wife at work

Have you ever commited an illegal act in order to obtain lp's?
Have you missed work or school in pursuit of vinyl?
Has the purchase of vinyl or turntables/accessories caused financial hardship for you and/or your family?
Has it affected your sex life in a detrimental way?
Is your family too embarassed of your decor to allow friends and relatives inside the house?
Have you spent grocery money on new needles? or worse, on used needles?
Have you filed bankruptcy following the purchase of a Goldmund Reference?
Have you spent your daily crack allowance on audio?
Did you give up a highly-paid professional career to clerk in a used record shop?
Got any pretty daughters? nude pics of your wife? wanna buy some?

I'm completely addicted. So much so, that I was going through my hallway closet just now to try and make more room for stuff, and found two piles of old 45's that I had found in a dumpster probably 10 years ago. Never even looked through them. I found some interesting titles - I think they were in a jukebox at one time? Beatles on the Odeon label made in Spain?? Moody Blues - Night In White Satin on the Deram label from Germany? So many oddball 45's. Some colored vinyl. And I've had them for a decade, and never looked at them until today......addiction for sure.
