How are these tables. Looks just like a technics sl1200...

anyone have any experience with these? I might be able to pick one up on the local craigslist for a good price.

The Technics is suppose to have a more substantial base (less resonant maybe?), but it seems to be a decent table.

Just in case people didnt know already i would only use it as an upgrade over my dual cs1257 which has some bad sibilance issues.

My experience with Gemini is poor. They look like Technics SL-1200's but are nowhere near them. I do not have experience with that particular table though.

The only info i can gather is from people using them to scratch, or mix. But some people say for the money they cant be beat.

The tonearm isnt great. It wont track below 2 grams. Looks great with a lousy arm. Gave it away. Not recommended:thumbsdn:

Instead of replacing the Dual with the Gemini (can't really recommend), I feel it would be better to determine why you are having sibilance issues with the Dual.

Sibilance is usually caused by the cartridge/stylus and setup, not the turntable.

As others have said, the Gemini really isn't all that great. The motor isn't too bad but the arm is lousy and is actually too long to allow correct cartridge alignment with some cartridges!

I'd stick with your Dual and get it sorted out, too.

Fix your Dual! The Gemini is rubbish. Poor build quality, tonearm not suited for better cartridges. If you want a DD turntable, get a Technics SL-1200 and be done with it. The 1200 is miles superior to it's many imitators and can be tweaked into something really superb.

well if the thing cant track under 2 grams then its a no brainer.

NOT A GOOD IDEA. EVEN IF THE GEMINI IS FREE:thumbsdn:

yeah it basically is free.

im just so frustrated with my sound. Unfortunately this is an expensive hobby and to really get a good sound out of vinyl you need to drop some cash which i dont really have at the moment.

Don't bail at this point. At this point it would probably be worth it to try a different cartridge/stylus combination on the Dual. Even if you buy an inexpensive (relatively) cartridge you'd spend less than a different arm on this other table? Look at the recent postings on the Shure that is on Amazon for less than $60 that lots of folks are raving about. You'll see it here below.

unfortunately this cartridge is too heavy for the stupid low mass arm on my dual.

I think the heaviest i can run is 6.5 grams for a cart.

agreed. "looks like" is where the comparisons end.

they are TOTALLY DIFFERENT animals.

It weighs 5 grams. About the same price as the Shure and has a stylus upgrade path.

Don't have to do this vendor--others have it. Some Grados are also under the 6.5 gram mark as well.

If the Gemini is almost free, why not get it and run it? I have the cheapest of the cheap Gemini tables and it has served me well for 4 years. I'm not an audiophile but I always thought it sounded fine. Remember, most people around here have pretty fancy tables or are into old school tables. I bet that Gemini would work just fine for you.
