Yesterday I came across a Spec 2 for a resonable price, I thought. When I plugged it in just to check the Protection light is on. Am I screwed or is that supposed to be on? I am not sure as this is my first Spec 2. Please help!!!!

The only amp/receiver with a more convoluted protection scheme I can think of is the Sansui G-22000/33000. The number of things that can cause the protect light to stay on in a Spec 2 are legion.
