View Full Version : Picked up a Couple of Shaded Dogs!!!
reidcc 03-12-2009, 07:39 PM At a Flee this weekend I found a couple of fairly clean RCA Shaded Dogs
Beethovens 1st and 9th Symphonies, with the booklet intact, and the plastic lined inserts. LSC-6096, 1S/4S/1S/1S. I haven't listened to the 1st yet, but I DO love the 9th.
Also found another Living Stereo Shaded Dog- LSC-2446 Rimsky-Korsakoff Scheherazade- also with the lined jacket, and very shiny vinyl indeed, but have some minor scuffs. 14S/11S Will clean and play over weekend.
Me thinks its time to start building a vinyl classical collection!

Sam Cogley 03-12-2009, 08:11 PM I think I have that 2446. Who performed on the Beethoven symphonies?

LSC-6096 is the Reiner/Chicago. The only other one is the Munch/Boston, LSC-6066.

Were LSC-6096 and LSC-6066 both the 1st and 9th together?
What about the LM-6901 box set? Arturo Toscanini conducting the NBC Symphony Orchestra, all 9 symphonies on 7 discs.
vinyl1 03-12-2009, 09:00 PM Were LSC-6096 and LSC-6066 both the 1st and 9th together?
LSC-6066: 8th/9th
LSC-6096: 1st/9th
The 8th/9th is the more usual combination, I can't remember another 1st/9th on any label.
shimniok 03-12-2009, 09:12 PM I've heard the "shaded dog" term bandied about... did a search... ok, clued in now.
Are these particularly desirable? I picked up a stack of free records via Freecycle several months ago and haven't gotten around to looking thru them until now... there are 4 or 5 shaded dogs in there... hmmm :scratch2:
vinyl1 03-12-2009, 10:12 PM We are talking original RCA stereo shaded dogs, the Living Stereo non-Dynagroove LSC series in clean US pressings made between 1959 and 1964.
I have 277 different titles in my collection, that's about 4/5 of the available issues.
shimniok 03-12-2009, 10:31 PM I will have to spin these and see how they sound... not holding my breath... if anyone cares I'll let you know what titles.
EDIT: nevermind. These are all mono apparently. But, will keep an eye out for these in the thrifts...
clydeselsor 03-12-2009, 10:50 PM Nice!

Nothing wrong with a Mono dog. All of mine sound great.
reidcc 03-14-2009, 03:18 PM I haven't touched them since-busy with Cal Ripken tryouts, and getting managers for teams, etc(ahh the JOYS of Springtime!!!).
I will try to stop by that Flee again tommorrow afternoon. The guy that sold these- had them in a box for $2.00 a piece- in the box next to them he had a bunch of rock records from the 70's that he wanted $4 a piece for. I quickly looked, and there was nothing rare about them, and everyone of them was TRASHED- covers, labels, records- gouges, scratches. I was gonna tell him he should reverse the prices on the boxes- but kept me mouth shut!!!

shimniok 03-17-2009, 11:09 AM Will, I did find a candidate in my collection. The Van Cliburn Tchaikovsky Concert No. 1, LSC-2252 which says ©1958 on the back, Living Stereo on the cover in plain black, album label is red, shaded dog logo, Living Stereo at the bottom.

Through all the pops and crackles from surface scratches and completely worn right channel, I can tell the recording is better than average. My parents have this recording on 4-track so I may yet get to experience this in a more pristine form. Cover is VG, record itself is a G with all the scratches and right channel wear (uh, ever hear of anti-skate, previous owner?!), but no skipping at least. Maybe I'll hang onto it for giggles. (it makes for good listening that is for sure! :music:)

You do realize that LSC-2252 is the most common shaded dog of all time? They sold over a million copies of that record, so assuming the 9-to-1 stereo-to-mono ratio, there must have been at least 100,000 stereo copies made. The lacquers on the stereos go up to the 80s and 90s.
The rare ones have only one lacquer, with probably about 1000-3000 copies sold.
LSC-2252 is actually quite good, and it is very easy to find a clean copy for cheap.

Yes. I figured it was at least in the top 3 if not the most common. I excised a comment to that effect just before posting. Since I'm in it more for the music than the collecting I don't actually care. You didn't think I was trying to compete with you, did you?? :D

shimniok 03-18-2009, 10:10 AM Huh, I have another one LSC-1806 Also Sprach Zarathustra, Reiner/CSO. I can see why people dig these. Will have to compare to my other versions ...ok, I'll let this thread die now. Thanks. :)
Infinitoid 03-18-2009, 05:31 PM Actually RCA did some "no dogs allowed" classical discs as well during that 1958-1964 time frame. I'm thinking of the Soria Series (LDS). The only one I have, Berlioz Requiem by Munch/Boston, has spectacular sound, art, packaging. And it was only 12 bucks new back then.

Dogs were not allowed because they wanted to export them to Europe, and over there the rights to the 'dog and horn' symbol were owned by EMI.
Curiously, some of the Sorias are also found with the shaded dog label as well.

Damn...I'd love to find that Dog on my thrift runs. I have the CD, it's always been one of my "audio check" discs.
