View Full Version : What group/artist do you own the most LPs of?
anytune 03-13-2009, 08:54 AM Was recently going through my personal LP collection looking for one particular letter "B" group when I decided to count all my Beach Boys LPs. Not counting duplicate copies, it comes to 30. Just wondering what artist(s) takes up the most shelf space in your collection?
Drybasement 03-13-2009, 09:17 AM Vinyl?
Without question it's Jethro Tull. I've got everything up to and including Roots To Branches on vinyl. All the various reissues on MFSL, DCC, EMI 100, ect. Some UK pressings but most are US. Last time I counted it was 54.
BroonsBane 03-13-2009, 09:19 AM Rush, not sure how many...
cfranz 03-13-2009, 09:45 AM About even Clannad and Tull
kenhappen2u 03-13-2009, 09:47 AM the beatles
Noborigama 03-13-2009, 09:47 AM Bob Dylan most likely
similost 03-13-2009, 09:49 AM The Who for me, but for some strange reason J. Giles isn't far behind, and I never tried to collect theirs. They were just in lots I bought...
OH.. maybe I need to count.. I got LOTS of Todd "the god" Rudgren too.. maybe at least 10 if not more..
electronjohn 03-13-2009, 09:59 AM Beatles or Stones...I'd have to count to make sure. Dylan's probably a close second. However, if Steely Dan had 30 albums all 30 would be there.
meggy 03-13-2009, 10:08 AM pretty complete collections of: Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane, CSN(Y) (and all variations), Jeff Beck, Fleetwood, Steve Miller, Moody's, ave amount of Beatles.

chicks 03-13-2009, 11:13 AM Doc Watson
Brett a 03-13-2009, 11:15 AM Will Oldham (a.k.a. Bonnie 'Prince' Billy) With John Coltrane and His Bobness (that'd be Dylan) running a close second.
Sansui Louie 03-13-2009, 11:20 AM That's kind of dependent on how many albums a particular group released, isn't it?
I'd own all 79 Dire Straits albums if they would have released that many. I own a shit ton of Elton John, because he did.
ekmanning5 03-13-2009, 11:24 AM Hands down its the Beatles with about 80 group and solo. With doubles its probably triple that. Beach Boys are second only because there are so many albums to get.
For some reason I have about 20 Kinks albums too. :scratch2:
Brett a 03-13-2009, 12:12 PM I own a shit ton of Elton John, because he did.
A shit ton?
That can't be pretty.
Mark W. 03-13-2009, 12:17 PM Pink Floyd Over 30

Yes

Steve Miller Band

vinyl1 03-13-2009, 03:09 PM I have a few kind of specialized collections.
Greham Parker: about 28 LPs, including some that were promo only
Battlefield Band: about 15, pretty much everything on vinyl.
Neil Young: maybe 20, including many doubles from the past ten years
Richard Thompson - the 6 with Linda, and about 15 solo
I do have all the Roger McGuinn solo LPs, but there are only 6 of those.
mid-fi-ry 03-13-2009, 04:00 PM I think all things Crosby, Stills Nash and Young... lots of different directions to collect there.
truetone36 03-13-2009, 04:08 PM Believe it or not-
Jackie Gleason
I've got ALL of his LPs, from a large batch of 50s-60s LPs I got last summer
KeninDC 03-13-2009, 04:13 PM Stones with me (duh).
I had nine copies of "Sticky Fingers" at one time. I still have at lease three of every Stones LP up to and including "Some Girls."
You gotta have DECCA versions, London Versions, mono versions, stereo versions, Japanese versions, MFSL versions, Dutch versions...
Urchinn 03-13-2009, 04:17 PM Frank Zappa...Geez, that was a bad choice for collecting! Frank recorded EVERYTHING and much of it has seen the light of day. So...all Zappa and related LPs and about 53 bootleg lps. Way over 100 all told. Now, if I can just get hold of the first Captain Beefheart lp in mono...
walkandtalk 03-13-2009, 04:20 PM Stereolab (http://www.stereolab.co.uk/discography/)
I think I have about 4 dozen different releases: LPs, Eps, singles, etc. Then there's the remixes by other bands, the tributes, etc.
That's not counting multiples. I have 10 copies of "Music for the Amorphous Body Study Center" (http://adaweb.com/influx/long/long0.html). 4 original white covers, 6 yellow re-release covers. (http://www.stereolab.co.uk/discography/1995/LP/music_for_the_amorphous_body_study_center/)
Why do I feel dirty for admitting this?

That's funny, I was thinking the same. I have so many of their releases but really only find myself listening to about 4 albums (Transient..., Mars Audiac..., Emperor..., and Dots and Loops. I never bought Margerine..., or Fab 4. I just got the latest one on vinyl used but haven't put it on yet. I know I have tons of 7" and CD singles but I rarely listen to those. I quit being a completist years ago and just bought the best stuff by a band.
also beatles, group and solo. maybe 30 lps.
then 'the who'
then 'yes'.

I knew I was getting really bad when I started to collect the test-record LPs that were the inspiration for Stereolab's cover art. (See my avatar). Believe it or not, I do actually listen to the whole collection, although I go through period phases within the groop's work.
ehoove 03-13-2009, 04:45 PM Fourplay, and Diana Krall

opt80 03-13-2009, 06:59 PM Dylan
Dr. Music 03-13-2009, 07:03 PM Beatles, group and solo releases.
Same here, due to the fact that McCartney has been such a prolific musician for so many decades and is still cranking out releases. Even without adding the Beatles releases and the other three's solo output, Macca would be the one who takes up the most shelf space in my collection.
NeedForSpeed 03-13-2009, 07:03 PM Pink Floyd
Aerosmith
targeteye 03-13-2009, 07:42 PM Another one for Beatles. 45 of the Group. not nearly as many solo but some.

jimfet 03-13-2009, 08:26 PM I would say Hendrix
George Jones.
Tony Bennett
Sinatra
Dan Hicks.
Beck.
Roxy Music/ Brian Ferry
LPMike 03-13-2009, 09:34 PM Hands down Jethro Tull. Got everything on vinyl with multiples of a few up until Rock Island. At that point i detached from the Tull fanaticism at the same time I tuned out Rush and Yes. It all happened around 1990.
My Rush and Yes collection spans the same, everything thru 1990, but Tull has em beat by the numbers. I even had (2) Athabasca 'My God' bootlegs for awhile, i think I just have one right now... Ive probably given away a half dozen rare Tull pressings over the last 25+ years, so my inventory is down from its high point, but it is all there. After Rock Island I just felt the magic was gone. And the thing that may have finished it for me was seeing em in Nov 1990 in Phoenix and Ian lost his voice 1/3 of the way through the show.. concert ended right there... no aqualung... and no refunds. the crowd was thoroughly pissed off. I respect Ian. But he could have at least come out and talked to the crowd.
They are still one of my favorite bands, and I wont take anything away from their greatness!

djw99mn 03-13-2009, 11:25 PM For me it's Elvis Presley. I have at least one copy of every album and 45 that has been released domestically by him since 1955. Even have most of the re-issues also. Lest I mention all the imports and cd's also.

BigManAndy 03-14-2009, 05:33 PM Less Than Jake
11 12"
2 10"
2 5"
28 7" - granted 2 are box sets of albums put on 7" records, but still.
most 7 inch records are just rarities from before any real labels were released when they were just a local band starting out. but most have since been put on 12" records as collections. the band has well over 200 releases. but only 7 full length studio albums.
this is just a taste:
http://www.lessthanjake.com/releases
and thats not even fully updated.
there a collector nerds dream!!! so many varieties on each album, different colors, jackets, pressings. its crazy!!
daza152 03-14-2009, 06:53 PM Mine would be Beatles and Pink Floyd, because when I started collecting vinyl I just thought I'd collect everything from those bands. Then I just went on to collect the best albums of any particular group, not all their albums as they wern't all good.
Thanks Daza.
TWantiques 03-14-2009, 07:40 PM With all the variations I would guess:
The Band
Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac
Terry
Toasted Almond 03-14-2009, 08:06 PM Frank Zappa & The Mothers
stoutblock 03-14-2009, 08:21 PM Led Zep and Pink Floyd...all of em
zappafan2 03-15-2009, 01:20 AM The most is Frank Zappa, I am a bigger deadhead but I refuse to pay some of the prices they ask here locally for something That I have on cd and I also have so many live recordings of the dead they are not my main priority now. I used to have every Dead studio on vinyl but in my younger days I decided I no longer needed vinyl and sold everything I had. I am kicking myself becouse now I buy stuff I used to have on vinyl.
vinylisfinal 03-15-2009, 01:24 AM rolling stones, prolly 20-25 lp's. wishbone ash, everything! ac/dc 15 or so. and the ramones, lost count!
