that dvd - from the classic album series- is very well worth purchasing. ive watched it many times over the years. probably the best of the series. even better than the dark side of the moon making-of dvd. very well done

Thanks so much for the link, Jim--and Scott, for pointing out the Classic Albums DVD--I just ordered it from Amazon. American Beauty is by far my favorite Dead record, and Box of Rain definintely one of my favorites cuts. Beautiful, timeless music. Anyone who owns a turntable should seek out an olive green label copy of the album--stunning sonics. I think I'll have to pull out my copy today.

Some background info, Phil underwent treatment for prostate cancer two years ago. I'm sure it made him think back to when Box of Rain was written.
The vid of Phil and Robert Hunter is recent. They just added some old clips into this piece.

This is the only worthwhile meaning that I've noticed. It's only the first part of the song. I'm not even convinced about it either, because the rest of the song doesn't follow my idea
