I love this album. Dave has a huge catalog of music and I was thinking that I'd add some more to my collection. What would you recommend?

What would you recommend? spartanmanor 03-13-2009, 02:29 PM Time Further Out KeninDC 03-13-2009, 02:42 PM "Red, Hot, and Cool." "Jazz at the College of the Pacific." I tend to gravitate toward his earlier stuff up to Time Out and some stuff right after. A general rule is to look for Paul Desmond in the band. After Paul left, Brubeck is much more paino oriented (not that that's a bad thing). Ken chicks 03-13-2009, 02:42 PM There's a good article, with some downloads, here: http://www.pbs.org/brubeck/theMusic/westCoastJazz.htm Drybasement 03-13-2009, 03:01 PM The Paul Desmond era is very good (1951-1967). I love his instantly recognizable alto sax. Jazz At Oberlin Red, Hot And Cool (Ken's suggestion) Time Further Out (Spartanmanor's suggestion) At Carnegie Hall Time Changes Time In (If you can find it. Great recording) We're All Together Again For The First Time (with Gerry Mulligan and Paul Desmond, 1972) His newer stuff with Bobby Militello on alto sax is pretty darn sweet also. London Flat, London Sharp The Crossing So What's New? jcmjrt 03-13-2009, 03:04 PM I'll check out the recs. Nice link on Brubeck too. Thanks. ehoove 03-13-2009, 05:15 PM Thanks for the info! Great post jcmjrt! Regards, Jim onepixel 03-13-2009, 05:43 PM Aside from the already mentioned, Concord on a Summer Night (1982) is a wonderfully live album. Btw... Concord is his home town. Good stuff! KeninDC 03-13-2009, 05:50 PM I have a sealed Columbia two-eye LP of "Jazz Impressions of Japan" that I will now open based on this thread. Review later. Ken electroking 03-13-2009, 05:59 PM "Red, Hot, and Cool." ... Ken The piece called 'Love Walked In' on this album is just wonderful! BULLWINKLE 03-13-2009, 06:22 PM "Riddle" is a fine album. caddisgeek 03-13-2009, 06:26 PM Jazz Impressions of America Jazz Goes to Junior College and another vote for Time Further Out monkeyking 03-13-2009, 06:28 PM It's much easier to just get it all. If it says Brubek on it you can't go wrong. Even if you don't like it at first blush, it will eventually grow on you. Urchinn 03-13-2009, 06:30 PM Brubeck's Time Out is like the Harry Potter of jazz...it interested alot of people who would have otherwise not gotten into jazz (or reading, in Potter's case). I'm partial to Dave Brubeck Plays Cole Porter...but I can't explain why I like it so much! KentTeffeteller 03-13-2009, 07:38 PM Dave Digs Disney is superb. Anything Goes is essential. Dave Brubeck plays Cole Porter Time Further Out is the logical sequel to Time Out. Every bit as superb an album to boot. Time Changes is recommended. geespot 03-13-2009, 07:43 PM I bought the 'For All Time' box set. Contains Time Further Out, Time Out, Time Changes, Time in Outer Space, and Time In. spartanmanor 03-13-2009, 08:04 PM Just out of curiosity I pulled my Brubeck stack: Brubeck on Campus The Dave Brubeck Quartet - 25th Ann Reunion Dave Brubeck - Two Generations of Brubeck "Brother, The Great Sprit Made it" The Dave Brubeck Trio - Blues Roots Dave Brubeck - Two Generations of Brubeck The Art of Dave Brubeck - The Fanatasy Years Dave Brubeck's - Greatest Hits The Dave Brubeck Quartet - Countdown Time in Outer Space - Columbia Six Eye Dave Brubeck - Time Out - Columbia Six Eye The Dave Brubeck Quartet - For Iola The Dave Brubeck Quartet - Time Further Out - Columbia Two Eye The Dave Brubeck Quartet - Jazz Impressions of New York The Dave Brubeck Quartet - Angel Eyes - Columbia Two Eye The Dave Brubeck Quartet - My Favorite Things - Columbia Two Eye pjsjr 03-13-2009, 08:23 PM ...my Brubeck stack: That's a nice stack...:music::yes::music:. So many wonderful albums and so little time and money. corporalcripp 03-14-2009, 04:35 PM Times Changes.Worth it for the second-side long quartet/orchestra opus, "Elementals".I'm awaiting a possible lp copy.Hope the guy still has it.Had it a long time ago, what a blast. It's worth it too to get a copy of the mid '70s 2 lp set,"Dave Brubeck's All Time Greatest Hits". dciurej 03-14-2009, 07:57 PM I have a soft spot in my heart for Brubeck because I bought "Time Out" for a quarter in a record bin at a second hand store in the early 70's. It was my first jazz album and I listened to it constantly for about a week. Got solidly hooked on jazz! Maestro_T 03-15-2009, 10:01 AM Count me in as another person who recommends At Carnegie Hall (live). It's a double album. That and Time Out are the only ones I have heard, but they are both great. There are some real heroics performed on the live album, including an unusual but cool song in 11/8 time. :) SpruceMoose 03-15-2009, 11:18 AM 25th anniversary is cool. a cut above is wonderful! time furthur out has some great stuff. pbda 03-15-2009, 03:35 PM Count me in as another person who recommends At Carnegie Hall (live).
