View Full Version : AKFest SMAC Rooms Volunteers

We'll need volunteers to staff the SMAC rooms from open until close each day. That's Saturday 9am-6pm and Sunday 9am-6pm.

It will take 24 separate volunteers, unless folks are willing to do two shifts, to staff both rooms at 1 and 1/2-hour shift increments for the entire weekend. That's a lot of volunteers.

Of course, we could do 3-hour shifts instead. But we'd still need 12 committed volunteers.

If you're interested in volunteering please post to this thread. I'll maintain a list of volunteers to start. Depending on the number of volunteers, we'll then decide on the time of each shift and when those shifts will occur.

Remember if you volunteer to staff the room, you must be willing and able to show up and complete your shift in the room. You also must be willing to take responsibility for the safety and general care of the equipment in the room.:smoke:

Thanks Mike. Much appreciated.

In fact thanks to everyone who has signed up so far.

As you can see though, we clearly need more volunteers. With 8 people, we're looking at 4+ hour shifts to staff both rooms for both days by rough guess-timate. Yikes!

We really need at least 12 folks to make this bearable. Even that is a 3-hour shift for each person. Anyone know anyone. More recruits?

Jeff, this might be a good thing to send over the SMAC email list. I don't mind sitting around for 4 hours.

I'll put something out on the list soon. Just wanted any lurkers here to consider volunteering.

4 hours is way too long for me, especially when all the other stuff is going on.

I'm planning on visiting the AK Fest on Saturday. I've been to one SMAC gathering at Ashok's, but other than that, I haven't spent any time with other SMAC members. I'd be happy to do some time in one of the SMAC rooms, but I would understand if the membership wouldn't be comfortable with a relatively new member being left in charge of their equipment.

Only problem, volunteerd to help with Fest and do not know my schedule yet. Will stay tuned.

Jeff,

If you end up with extra volunteers, it would be great if they could also help relieve the AKers who have rooms so they can get out and see the show too... I know I could use some help. Hosting a room at the show is really cool in its own right, but it is a large chore as well.

After the show last year I kept reading and hearing about some of the stellar show rooms (Hawthorne Audio for an example) and realized that I never had a chance to go listen to them myself. It can be a little frustrating as you load your stuff up at the end of the show and you realize that you missed so much. Based on this, I didn't plan on having a room this year. It was only after hearing that there were rooms that needed to be filled that I reluctantly signed up again. It's a blessing and a curse.

At this point we are short volunteers, so don't count on extra assistance.

I agree that having a room can be a chore and you miss out on seeing some stuff. One of the main reasons that I avoid getting a listening room.

I'll be sure to let you know if we have any leftover volunteer hours.

Thanks Jeff! Us SMAC guys need to stick together.. The rest of our world may be crumbling around us, but good music isn't!

Also, thank you for all the work you do organizing SMAC. You are doing a wonderful job!

I penciled a couple of folks into the schedule - these were "definites" based on previous replies. If anyone that's currently on the list wants a particular time slot, now is the time to act. Let me know.

Will do. Both scheduled for Saturday 12-3pm...ok?

Looks like it will be slightly less time for everyone.

I need to bone up on my math skills to figure it out.

Anybody willing to help with this?????? I know I'm a moron but.....I think we have 15 volunteers (minus dlwask who can only do Friday and he's scheduled) into 34 hours of room time. I come out with 2.2666666 hours each. Which is how much?

2 hours and 15 minutes?

Your calculator did not lie to you Jeff, thats 2 hrs 15 mins a "shift".

Also, its a pretty safe bet at this point for me to take a shift on Sunday to make it 16 volunteers which takes it all the way down to 2 hrs 7mins 30 sec a shift :)

How are we doing the most important part of this room....the MUSIC!? Each bringing our own stuff to fill the 2 hours?

Excellent thanks. Shift times adjusted - 2hours 15 minutes each on Saturday; 2 hours even on Sunday. 16 total volunteers.

Signed you up for Sunday 9:30-11:30...let me know if that ain't gonna work.

Hey Jeff, if this time is still open put me down for Sat. 1:30 TO 3:45. Also if there are any problems with times for any others you could just put me in that time slot and just let me know. I am pretty open and flexible so "no wrries"
