Hi, Not as easy as you think is it? Too many good ones to choose from, but I think if you narrow it down, starting with your fav album, this would probably contain your fav song, but not always so. My choice of songs are out of 3 of my fav albums:

While my guitar Gently Weeps - White album

Hard days night - Hard days night

Taxman - Rubber Soul

These can change as I'm sure your does too, But for now top 3

Thanks Daza:music:

Abbey Road - Maxwell's Silver Hammer
Abbey Road - Octopus' Garden
Abbey Road - I Want You (She's So Heavy)

Are you beginning to see a theme here?! I think that all of the Beatles albums are full of great (as well as timeless) tunes, but on their earlier albums, the sound quality isn't there, and there has to be a delicate balance for me-which is why I couldn't understand why Mobile Fidelity released box sets of the Rolling Stones & The Beatles (I own the Beatles collection.....they did the best that they could). I don't mind listening to the early works of the Beatles on something simple (like my car stereo), but in my home, I find that I can't get into the music because the quality of the recording isn't up to snuff. The only three Beatles albums that had excellent sonic quality were; "Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band", "Let It Be", & "Abbey Road". However, "Abbey Road" sounded like the band was working as a whole, and not quite as fragmented as the sessions from "Let It Be" or "Sgt. Peppers". Maybe the titles means something, but what do I know....

Just some food for thought!

As I own all of the Beatles albums this is a very tough question. Strangely, about 1/4 of those songs mentioned so far by respondents are among my least favorite - but that is okay, That is what makes the Beatles so likable - there is much to choose from for all tastes.
If I could own only one album it would be Abbey Road. It is not the first Beatles album (33 1/3) I ever owned but it was one of the first cassettes I owned. I finally wore it out as a teenager and later replaced it. Despite that being my favorite overall album I'm not sure if my favorite one song only would be from that album or not. I must give it some more thought.

Impossible to answer as the supply is overwhelming. I will say that Something is my favorite by George.

Otherwise, I like em all. Some gems that come to mind are Rain, Its All Too Much, Happiness is a Warm Gun, Getting Better, etc, etc,

One that gets no attention is I've Got a Feeling on Let It Be. Its no classic, but a damn good R&R tune with both John and Paul singing. Had another band done it, it would have been a smash hit. For the Beatles, its an afterthought.

OK - I'll take the bait
For an early one, when they were doing a lot of covers - Slow Down from the Something New LP

From the middle period, the Paperback Writer/Rain 45 really kicked it up a notch. These were the first songs that really let you hear what Paul was doing. Absolutely great bass lines. Appeared on the Hey Jude compilation.

From the later LP's the song that really knocked me out was The End off Abbey Road. Ringo's drums at the beginning were perfect and then John Paul and George each trade smokin guitar riffs that lead to that great closing phrase. Just a couple of minutes long - typical of the Beatles, they leave you begging for more.

I don't think I could pick a favorite from the white album. Great collection of songs from all over left field (with the possible exception of Blackbird - I'm back and forth on that one - so shoot me). If I could really only pick one though I'd have to put the white album aside and go with Elanore Rigby.

ml69 hit a main point.

They created "so much", and somehow, so many of their songs were very "listenable". I keep revisiting songs of theirs, and I can't think of another groups with so many that I like. It's very arguable that many of their lyrics were simplistic, but somehow they kept "getting it right".

My current "new/old" fav is "I will".

Yeah, great thread. So many great songs, although I like the stories behind the songs like 'Paperback Writer', a great track and I think Paul used 'direct injection' for his bass work on that track. 'Rain' is another interesting track, and one of John's first songs influenced/ inspired by LSD (the reversed bit at the end is very psychedelic!).

'Across the Universe', a beautiful song John wrote about transcendental meditation, and I can personally identify with the sentiments being a practitioner of T.M. myself. Regards, Felix aka catman.

Very tough question - lots to pick from!

Off the top of my head, these would definitely be in the running:

While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Yesterday
My Sweet Lord
Get Back

There should be one more on that list, but it hauntingly lingers on the tip my tongue (or should that be ear? :D ).

Close on their heels would be two groups: some ballads and "soft" tunes like Norwegian Wood and Nowhere Man, and a slew of their early "rock n roll" tunes like Ticket to Ride, 8 Days a Week, etc...

But mentioning any list like this seems unfair, as it omits a lot of good stuff, from Hey Jude to Back in the USSR and Dear Prudence, etc... Then again, there are some Beatles songs that I don't care for ("take it or leave it"), but their best were quite good.

After the break-up, I'd rank Ringo's "It Don't Come Easy" as about as good as it got, no offence to Sir McCartney.

Interesting. Which album?

I actually like a lot of the material from the BBC sessions. Gives you that raw musical talent they had and a bit more sense of the histeria that was going on at the time. Hard for people who weren't here at the time to really rasp how big Beatlemania was!

It was like nothing before that time. I read a great book last year that gave a good sense of it. How it changed their lives and the lives of so many internationally.

I keep telling my son - the Beatles really changed what was played on the radio and TV. Elvis did a lot too. But the Beatles were part of a revolution in music. They were driven by Rock and Roll. EMI wanted them to record softer stuff but they fought back.

Given music industry today it's hard to imagine what it was like back in the late 50's early 60's. They risked a lot sticking to what they loved. And it paid off!

Are you the only one who picked up on the fact that Back in the USSR is a masterful parody, stoutblock?

The title of the song is a tribute to Chuck Berry's "Back in the U.S.A." while the chorus pays homage to the Beach Boys' "California Girls." The song also contains a pun on Hoagy Carmichael's and Stuart Gorrell's "Georgia on My Mind." McCartney is singing about the Soviet Republic of Georgia, whereas "Georgia on My Mind" after "Moscow Girls" has been described as being about either or both of the state of Georgia in the U.S. or a woman named Georgia. McCartney thought that when he listened to the Beach Boys, it sounded like California, so he decided to write a song that "sounded" like the U.S.S.R.. The title was inspired in part by the "I'm Backing Britain" campaign which had been endorsed by British Prime Minister Harold Wilson. It has been suggested that McCartney twisted that into "I'm Back In (backin') the U.S.S.R."

In his 1984 interview with Playboy, McCartney said:

“ I wrote that as a kind of Beach Boys parody. And 'Back in the USA' was a Chuck Berry song, so it kinda took off from there. I just liked the idea of Georgia girls and talking about places like the Ukraine as if they were California, you know? It was also hands across the water, which I'm still conscious of. 'Cuz they like us out there, even though the bosses in the Kremlin may not. The kids do. And that to me is very important for the future of the race.

yes masterful but also a solid rocker by any standards!

Of course, you're right about their sound. I suppose it can be re-created, to a certain degree, in the studio. But, why bother?

If I were one of the first responders I would have gone with the medley on the B side of Abbey Road, but as I'm not, I'll throw a bone to one of their simpler compositions, "Two of Us". I'd never considered it a favorite, or a contender for best Beatles song, until I realized I've played it more than any other Beatles song over the years, so there goes my vote.

I know that's gotten to be popular slap to the Beatles but it really is arrogant. While McCartney was the Beatle with the most natural talent it would not have been the Beatles without John. Ringo is a great drummer and George was a great guitarist, singer and became a great writer too.
