View Full Version : Stereophile and Klipsch
Netdewt 03-14-2009, 07:52 PM My budget and taste have me considering low-watt tube amps. Klipsch speakers have been recommended because of their sensitivity, and Heresys are on the top of my list right now. I currently own Promedia 4.1s and I'm very pleased with them for what they are.
Anyways my question is open ended I'm sure, but why has Stereophile NEVER reviewed a Klipsch speaker?
The K section of the loudspeaker review browser on Stereophile: http://stereophile.com/floorloudspeakers/index19.html
EDIT: OK, one time. http://www.stereophile.com/budgetcomponents/204klipsch/index.html
ldatlof 03-14-2009, 07:55 PM They reviewed the LaScalas last year. IIRC the reviewer liked them a lot.
sheltie dave 03-14-2009, 08:33 PM Stereophile requires a manufacturer to send them a set of speakers to be reviewed.
What happens if your company sells a boatload of speakers and doesn't see the need to get xyz reviewed? It doesn't happen.
Stereophile did review the La Scala II, gave it an "A" grade, and the reviewer bought the set he had reviewed, which says a lot.
jdandy 03-14-2009, 08:36 PM In my opinion, the Klipsch Heresy is no comparison to the LaScalla. If you can swing it, the LaScalla is a keeper.
sssmokin99 03-14-2009, 08:50 PM Dig up the Stereo Review , review, of the Klipsch Forte. The late Julian Hirsch positively gushed over the speaker. It was what made me aware of them and ultimately, some years later, I bought a pair of Forte II's.
Yeah, I know, that had nothing to do with the original question :D

I totally understand that. I'd get something betting if I had room/$. The Heresy just seems, at this point, to be the best I can do for under $400. My wife even thinks that is ridiculously expensive.

Considering those too, but they're bigger and a few hundred more usually. Also, they seem harder to find in my area.

Just as a suggestion, if you want to keep it under $400, I'd try to find a pair of KG-4's to listen to before I bought the Heresy. I've heard both, as well as the LaScala's, and for a going price around $250 or so, the KG-4 might surprise you. And the lower price might score a few points with SWMBO.
Oh, and I agree that the LaScala's are in a different league, but now you're talking a bit more coin.
BadassBob 03-14-2009, 09:31 PM Once the weather gets decent, go out to garage sales and estate sales. You may score something there. I have Forte 1s, and got a hell of a deal on em.

Thanks for the tip. I will definitely check those out. They look sweet!
mpholland 03-15-2009, 04:11 PM I have Cornwalls, Heresies, and KG4's. Think I am in about 800 for all 3 pair. With a little diligence and patience you can usually find a deal somewere. I found the CW on Craigslist, the Heresies at a yard sale, and the KG4's at Goodwill. If you were a little closer I would make you a great deal, but shipping costs (and the carelessness of some shipping companies) would suggest you find something local.

I'm running KG4's, and for 300 or less you'll get a fine speaker.
cmb3366 03-16-2009, 06:38 PM There are alot of great deals out there on older model Klipsch if you keep your eyes open.
I paid less than half your maximum budget for my KLF's off Craigslist, and even with the Crite's mods I'm still just under. Heck, my speaker cables (Sonorans) cost more than my speakers and mods :D
BTW, Klipsch speakers SING on 18watts of Single Ended Triode power.
BadassBob 03-16-2009, 08:43 PM Klipsch and tubes are a match made in heaven, although I have yet to hear my Fortes on a SET.
rickelrod 03-16-2009, 08:50 PM I recently picked up a pair of KG4s on Craigslist for $100. I replaced the 2 horn diaphrams with Titanium units for $60 (1 was bad) They sound great, especially the horns! I push them with a Luxman L-580 I feel I did well for $160
Netdewt 03-16-2009, 09:25 PM A guy on CL offered me Heresy II's for $300 today. I passed it up... too close to garage sale season!

FYI, I ended up grabbing a pair of KG4s this weekend off Craigslist for $180. They sound fantastic!
drknstrmyknight 01-30-2010, 12:05 PM Stereophile has reviewed the LaScala's, Fortes and Palladiums (P39F) at least.
Not that would be a decision maker for me.

tensleep 01-30-2010, 05:48 PM I got these KP301-B-Br, an industrial version of the Chorus, about a year ago from a used furniture/antique store for $100, along with a coupe of big University systems and a GE mono tube console. The total deal was $225. Keep looking. You never know what you'll turn up.

Tensleep, that is some schweet schtuff you got there!
tensleep 01-30-2010, 06:40 PM Thanks Jon - I had a good run for awhile there. I have the Klipsch passively biamped at the moment. I am waiting for my active crossover to show up. I really have a huge project list, though.
JHoman 01-30-2010, 06:42 PM I have the KG4's & a pair of CornWall I's, both sound great with my Latino / Dynaco ST12o.
sssmokin99 01-30-2010, 10:24 PM I have a GE console like the one in the photo. It originally was in a blonde finish, but has been redone in walnut. The guts were removed long ago, but I use it as a cabinet for records, etc. My mother bought it used years ago.

Mine has all of the parts, but the record changer is hammered pretty hard. This project is on the back burner for now.
gatorvrx 01-30-2010, 11:28 PM mpholland is right. A little patience. In the last two weeks I've picked up a pair of heresy's for $50.00, and KG 4's for $100.00 on CL. And as ricklerod did, I replaced the phenolic diaphragms in the kg's for $60.00, and have ordered new crossover parts from Bob Crites for the Heresy's. Just keep looking at CL, visit some thrift stores, and you'll find some nice speakers for decent money. Good Luck......
xtreme4099 02-01-2010, 04:58 PM Stereophile has reviewed the flagship Klipsch Palladium in June 09
