View Full Version : just discovered 'Beach House'
screenersam 03-17-2009, 02:46 PM just got some 'Beach House' tunes. awesome! reminds me a LOT of Fleet Foxes and Band of Horses (I think fans of Mazzy Starr and Mojave 3 will also recognize the sound). sweet mellow, but not syrupy, alt-pop. highly recommended.
also got a 'Penny's Pet Dragonfly' cd. alt-pop, great road music. :thmbsp:
solarmusick 03-17-2009, 09:04 PM good stuff indeed. unfortunately, i only have some of their music downloaded at the moment, i'd like to buy some soon. i really like the song "Apple Orchard" from their debut. If you want some similar music, try checking out some other dream pop/shoegaze bands like My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, Asobi Seksu, etc.
TheWiz718 03-17-2009, 10:52 PM I just bought Devotion on vinyl. Hope it sounds good.

gregswaim 03-18-2009, 12:50 PM I've had this CD since it was released. Very nice tracks! :music:
JohnVF 03-18-2009, 01:31 PM I've liked what I've heard on their recordings, but my first exposure to them was live (the opened up for one of my favorite bands, The Clientele)...and they go down in history as the more boring live band I have ever seen. Felt like two insufferable hipsters screwing around in their basement with a casio keyboard. BUT...they sound like a different band on recordings. Their performance really turned me off but then I warmed up to them again after hearing what they could do. Maybe it was just a bad night for them.

Even on their "Devotion" studio effort, I get that feeling on occasion. Still, I really enjoy their dreamy, slightly trippy, low-fi sound.
Plus, I have a high tolerance for hipsters (see, e.g., the Velvet Underground's John Cale).

Paris 1919 is one of my favorite albums, so I can deal with insufferable if there's songwriting like that. But the girl from Beach House seemed like one of those girls with a tendency to wear costume fairy wings all year 'round.

I dated a chick like that.
We were stuck in a parking lot after a concert and I got out to take a whizz and she screamed "Stop, stop the car is moving!" Needless to say, her mind was moving at at least 60 mph, but the car was not. True story.
Sorry to digress, but you jogged a memory.
