Hi You All!

I've got a nice Technics Sl-5, got a Technics P30 cart to it, with a new but after manufactured tip. It sounds not bad, but gets not so nice inwards, I mean IGD. So what cart for an upgrade, choices are limited, because of availability:

Shure m92
At 101p
Ortofon lineup omp5 and 10

Thanks!

I have an Ortofon on a similar P-mount Technics table I gave to my son and it did quite a good job. I think he certainly enjoys it and I found to perform quite well. I'd seriously consider, however, the AT 92-ECD you can find on e-Bay and in other places for well under $30. It performs great and you can upgrade the stylus down the road. I think it might be a good place to start.

Turntableneedles has a Digitrac 300se (Ortofon) Nude Fine Line P-mount for $94 that's tough to beat, unless maybe you get the LpGear Shibata for $150.

Otherwise I second getting a $25 AT92ECD and then you can upgrade the stylus with LPGear's various offerings...

Thanks for the advices!

I think I will skip the ebay part, the shipping costs and vats... would too much for me here and now.

Is it true, that the needle of Shure M97xe would fit on the M92? Of course used with the brush up.

LP Gear has tons of options. And no Ebay! I love the Ortofon sound, which is what I have on my SL-10.

Yeah, but will they ship to Hungary? :scratch2:

You can email them and ask. They answer emails very quickly and are very helpful.

I've used a M97xE stylus on my MP94E cartridge, and the M94 stylus is interchangeable with the the M92 stylus. I could try out the M97xE stylus on the M92 body and report back if you'd like.

With the adjustable tracking force on my Technics SL-M3 linear tracker, I was able to set the tracking force to 1.75 grams and use the N97xE/MP94E combination with the brush down.

If you can get Ortofon carts in Hungary, consider the X1-MCP, a high-output moving coil p-mount. It performs very nicely on my SL-M3.

Okay guys, I will ask them. But until then, what is the answer for the question above?

You are fast! I would be glad, if you would that favor for me!

The N97xE stylus does fit on a M92E body. According to my digital scale, swapping in this stylus increased the weight of the cartridge plus the stylus from 6.0 grams (the T4P standard) to 6.8 grams, which would result in a tracking force of around 2 grams on a turntable without any tracking force adjustment. On turntables where it is adjustable (which I think the SL-5 has), it would be less adjustment to get to the 1.75 grams suggested for the brush down, than the 1.25 suggested for the brush up.

It was pretty late when I got home last night, and I was too tired to trust myself to swap the cart onto my SL-M3 turntable and dial in the tracking force. I'll try to give it a test drive tonight.

Here are two alternatives. THe first is a .2 x .7 elliptical. The second is a hyperelliptical.

I've also got a technics with a P-Mount arm. I know it's not on your list; but I'm using a Grado Green and I am, so far, quite happy with it. Reasonably priced too.

Hello All!

How it's turned out? You've tried it?
I'm really anxious!

Cheers!

It has been a crazy busy week. I'll try to give the N97xE/M92E combination a spin after supper, in a few hours.

They should do - I've bought from them, and they had no trouble shipping to Australia. I received the package in just over a week from when they posted it, with a new cartridge, and a replacement stylus for another cartridge I own.

I would go with either of the Ortofons. I have had a Shure M92 and didn't like it....could never get the tracking force just right so that the "s" sounds didn't sound fuzzy or "shishy".

Shshshurre isn't it?
My M97xe was not sibilant when it was new.

Has anyone tried a Grado Black on a SL-5?

Yes, I have tried the Grado Black, Ortofon OM10p-10E, Audio Technica AT 331LP, Shure 105 xe (ibeleive thats the model number it's a line contact high end "P"mount from the 1980's) and am currently awaiting the delivery of the Ortofon MC1-XP. The best value is the Grado black. Typical Grado sound great Mids slightly tubby Bass and good but not great highs. The overall best sound is the Ortofon OM10P retipped with a JICO OM 30 stylus very good sound crystal clear highs, Clear Mids (not as rich as the Grado though) and tight, deep Bass. We will see how the Moving Coil sounds when the MC1-XP arrives. I have used all of the above cartridges in the following Technics SLT models I currently own SL-DL5, SL-5, SL-7 and SL-J1. The reason for all these SLT's (in case you wondered) is their excellent tracking and resistance to "foot falls" in my "flexi floor" bedroom. Every thing from my Linn to a Philips GA212 would skip like crazy but the SLT's have no problem and now I can have Vinyl again in my bedroom.

I tried out the M92E/N97xE combination on my Technics SL-M3 yesterday and today. My calculations were correct; I was not able to adjust the tracking force to 1.25 grams due to the extra weight of the N97xE stylus (the SL-M3 allows for adjustment ± 0.25 grams). I was able to adjust the tracking force to 1.75 grams and use it with the brush down. Sound was quite good (no sibilance), and tracking on warped vinyl was excellent, very much the same as my earlier trial of the N97xE stylus with a MP94E cartridge body.

Wow you've got some serious vinyl color!

I've tried it also, and my observations were a kind of mixed. It tracks better, less sibilance, but channel balance is out of the middle. Right side is stronger than left side. Pff.
