View Full Version : Too many doobies??
Sansui Louie 04-02-2009, 07:27 AM So I'm on the "D" section of "Play every record I own" and about 5 albums into the Doobie Brothers. I picked these all up in different places at different times, and having not played them a great deal (if at all), it would seem that everyone who owned a Doobie Brothers album back in the day was too stoned to handle a tonearm. It seems odd that a random collection of vinyl could consistenly have that many bad pops and scratches...even after thorough RCM cleaning.
My other observation was that Michael McDonald sucks. The point where they jumped the shark is clear...when they started letting that sap sing love songs all the time. He, Peter Cetera, Steve Perry, Dennis DeYoung, Kevin Cronin and David Gates should form a band called "Sap".
fotno 04-02-2009, 07:31 AM Doobie Brothers albums should definitely be on the top of the "likely to have been ruined by semi-conscious abuse" list.
Never did like Michael McDonald.

mhardy6647 04-02-2009, 08:38 AM I always thought that Mr. McDonald had one of those "testicles caught with a pair of Channel-Loks" voices. That dead lead singer guy from AC/DC had one of those voices, too.
On the bright side, Michael McDonald was allowed to sing with Steely Dan. On several occasions. His contribution to Peg, e.g., is unmistakable.

As a back-up singer he was ok.

Don't knock the Bon Scott!
Looking forward to your Duran Duran reviews...unless you have some Val Doonican?

rush2112guy 04-02-2009, 08:56 AM Maicobmw, Very nice looking Beemer! I will have to have one soon. I am currently reading a book by Neil Peart (drummer for Rush) and it is about his adventures on his BMW. He's a world traveler on his. I would love to just be able to explore The U.S.

KeninDC 04-02-2009, 09:09 AM Of course, the Doobies had that great part on "What's Happening" when the kids tried to tape a concert.

(write this date and post down....CG and SL agree on something...:D)
dshoaf 04-02-2009, 09:36 AM The Doobie Bros was one of those bands where musicians came and went by the dozens. If they had had to hand out IRS W2 forms, it would have reached the ceiling.
I've met some of those guys that still live in the San Jose area and they're all excellent musicians. Once the DB hit the big time, the record companies poured $$ into production with Ted Templeman, who IMHO, made the DB sound.
I also heard them in concert about 1972 with pretty much the members from the Toulouse Street LP release. It was a good concert, well executed and the musicians were engaging with the audience. BTW, Peter Frampton opened for them, too. Lots of folks, of course, brought their own Doobies.:smoke:
On the Michael McDonald membership, he certainly does seem to polarize folks. From a musician's standpoint, he had one specific valuable ability: the range of his voice allows him to sing without falsetto in the alto range and it was a fully-developed voice, to boot. This fully developed voice plus his rock music arranging ability, hard to come by in those days, made him a first-call studio musician - he wouldn't have gotten into Steely Dan without those skills.
This isn't a defense but just pointing out that he does the chops. I've got a couple of his solo albums and he does write catchy tunes you find youself humming a few days later. I don't listen to them that often, which says something. On the other hand, Dave Mason had the same ability, too, as a song writer and his albums plus the old Traffic albums are a different story.
Still, I have fond memories of the Doobies since they, IMHO, pretty much define what went right with pop rock in the 70s.
Cheers,
David
ec1st 04-02-2009, 10:16 AM I never considered Michael McDonald a person with an enviable singing voice, but in rock 'n' roll that quality never was important. Rock is a medium that thrives on vocalists who can almost sing. (Witness: Joe Cocker who accomplished more on projecting emotion than with an Andy Williams style smoothness of voice.) If you look at Rock music in the seventies an apparent change flows through the middle of the decade where the last of hippie influenced dancing-in-the-moonlight introspectiveness gives way to rock's potential for being about fun. Three Dog Night, Fleetwood Mac, and The Doobies came out of the same era. Some groups, for whatever reasons, had the fortune to successfully acquire new talent and develop a new sound that connected with the audiences of the late '70s. They got an extended lease on life. I think Michael McDonald did this for The Doobie Brothers.

Spinning it now. This is some good shit! :D
cactuscowboy 04-02-2009, 11:47 AM I've also got five Doobie Brothers LPs (all cheap thrift/yard sale finds) and don't get too excited by them. But I do play them when I'm in the mood. I like hearing the albums, after years of FM radio playing nothing but the 'big hits' a million times.
What's next Louie? I assume you've got some Doors in your collection?
Sansui Louie 04-02-2009, 11:49 AM Ha! I actually have not found a single playable Doors album. I guess that could be attributable to perhaps more than doobies.
BigManAndy 04-02-2009, 01:46 PM the only doobie brothers album i own is the Best of the Doobies volume 1. bought it on a whim. listened to it and to be honest i like every song that Michael Mcdonald DOESN'T sing.

whats the deal with that!!! every Doors record i have bought used looked to be in great condition, but were BEAT!! for playback..

add 2 deep purple albums to that list, made in japan, and machine head.
I can never fin decent copies of either of those.
bought a copy of made in japan at a yard sale a few years back, and found a chunk of hash stuck inside the cover. the records were scratched up, and covered in candle wax....

Doooood!
Mine are both great....just listened to them. Got em at a thrift.
treserious 04-02-2009, 02:48 PM the hash was petrified, and unsmokeable, and the records were unlistenable.
still, was worth the 50c for the laugh of finding that chunk...
I finally got a good copy of machine head, But I would say that a large proportion of those 2 albums are in a bad state, as least in my neck of the woods.
BigManAndy 04-02-2009, 03:02 PM yea Deep Purple is beat to hell around here too. hard to find a listenable copy. I'm still on the hunt. in most cases the back ground noise is unbearable.

Yep, Thats the way to do the Doobies.
One album, maybe two. Greatest hits.
Otherwise its just wasted space IMO. Michael MacDonalds flinty voice bores me no end.
Who did I read was badmouthing Joe Cocker? ec1st...Slow dooowwn.
Thats not emotion, its Palsy riddled with emotion, and Sheffield Steel is an iconic album in this house.
Now thats music.

Second person to say not to knock Bon Scott. Some listeners of AC/DC, like my brother, prefer his voice to Brian Johnson's, and so listen more to early AC/DC than later. I personally like both singers equally well.
sirianni 04-02-2009, 10:53 PM Michael McDonald sucks.
fotno 04-02-2009, 11:00 PM To my ear nothing could be more dissimilar than Michael McDonald and Bon Scott. Bon had one of those chain saw on nitrous voices, while McDonald's voice sounds like he's chewing on a mouth full of cotton balls.

mid-fi-ry 04-02-2009, 11:21 PM Red Streamliner by The Little Feat.... McDonald is just alright with me.
McDonald was a pretty well respected session player in southern california back in the day.
elcoholic 04-02-2009, 11:38 PM I only have the Best of and Minute By Minute - I can't say I'm a Michael McDonald fan, but I like Minute by Minute a lot. I supposed none of you guys will listen to It Keeps You Runnin either.

If you just listened to their records you would swear that Micheal McDonald and Micheal Bolton are the same guy.:D
Sansui Louie 04-03-2009, 12:25 AM Bwahahaha on the Bolton/McDonald comparison. Hate 'em both. And they both sound like they have a turd stuck in sideways.
I would disagree quite a bit with the poster(s) who say that the way to go is with the greatest hits collections. The things I like about the Doobies, particularly in their pre-jump-the-shark years is the stuff you DONT hear on the radio. There's some quality material on the early albums.
Hifirob2 04-03-2009, 01:38 AM hmmm...my Doobie Brothers albums are in great shape. But, SL, you didn't mention anything about your Thomas Dolby albums.....how did they sound?
She blinded me with Doobie Brothers?
It's late - I'm obviously out of it.....

Cool, would have liked to know that owner....sounds like a lot of my old friends back in the day. I used to find all sorts of stash in the gear that came into my shop for repair back then. Met a lot of great people that way.....now if I could only remember the details. :smoke:
Look closely and you'll likely find Matuse or Boone's Farm wine stains on the jackets, too. It was a great life in my 20s.
BTW, on the Doobie Bros, I remember the day that the Vices/Habits LP hit the local record store. The record store owner brought down a fresh-out-of-the-box copy which we quickly installed on the big demo system and let it rip. People came in off the street to ask what was playing and then went down the street to buy a copy. The record store owner flipped out and had me install the exact demo system in all his stores. Then for the next few months, the owner of the audio store I worked at went around to all the local LP shops in a 10 county area selling systems on that basis. It was one well-recorded and mixed LP that hit you right between the ears once the needle hit the wax.
Cheers,
David

Canuck57 04-03-2009, 09:53 AM I loved the Doobie Brothers (went to 3 concerts) until McDonald joined the group. They sucked big time after that! :tears:

I like the Doobies a lot, seen them 3-4 times, but the shows are pretty much the same. =No MM doobies though, just the tom Johnston rocking versions.
"Toulouse Street" is my fave, but the early stuff really is all good, fun music.
Kevin Cronin was OK on the first REO lps. REO Two is a pretty decent rocker, but anything after Tuna Fish blows big chunks...

ec1st 04-03-2009, 05:58 PM Who did I read was badmouthing Joe Cocker?
I wasn't badmouthing Cocker. He has his distinctive sound and it worked for him. Because of his distinctiveness, on a recording, it would be hard to mistake him for, say, Diana Ross, or Andy Williams.
asoundhound 04-03-2009, 06:46 PM best doobie albums:
toulouse street, captain and me, what were once vices..., stampeed
mediocre doobie albums:

i think that covers all their studio albums
