I recently added a new (to me) Musical Fidelity X DAC to one of the dedicated 2-channel systems and I have to say that I am impressed. I was not entirely convinced an outboard DAC would do much of anything. Boy was I wrong.

I basically took this step as a last resort. The system in question has turned out to be the most revelaing rig I've ever owned. The Infinity RSII's are incredibly accurate and made my toshiba SD-3950 sound like garbage. There was some real harshness going on there.

The first disc to get tested, when I was finally able to play with my new toy, was the first one I played on the RSII's. Jimi, Live at Winterland. The damn thing was shrill and hard to listen to. No longer. The detail and air is still there, but it is now enjoyable without the edge that was present.

After listening to some other discs it became apparent that there was also improvement in the soundstage. There used to be a tendancy on some discs to be either too separated or all piled up in the center. Also no longer. There is a nice even separation across and beyond the speakers, as well as some more depth.

There has also been the nice little added bonus of HDCD decoding. I never paid any attention to this format but did a little research after finding out the MF decoded it and discovered I actually had a HDCD disc. Ghost Reveries from Opeth has never sounded so good!

A little perspective.......I'm not claiming this is as big an improvement as say, moving up the food chain from an HTIB receiver to separates, or throwing a pile of money at great new speakers. I needed an accurate pair of speakers and quality line and power amplification (and those could be improved still) to hear the difference in the first place. But the improvement is definately apparent. :music:

Welcome to the outboard DAC club. Once you start this process, you never finish - but it is always worth it!

Every external DAC I've ever had (Audio Alchemy Dac in the box; ART DI/O;
Lucid DA9624; Beresford) has been a big improvement over the analog output of any CD/DVD player I've ever used. Same goes for computer sound cards and
audio interfaces.

Congratulations on a 'great leap forward' in your system! :thmbsp:

Yep, those RS IIs are incredibly revealing speakers, and will force you to make every part of your system better. But boy, will they reward you with some incredible sound quality, when things get right. The only real downside is that since they will also reveal the shortcomings in the actual recordings that no DAC can remedy (really bad mixing, loudness/compression...), some of your CDs will always remain 'unlistenable' through them!

I recently started experimenting with external DACs, too. Opens up a whole new area of audio fun!

Perhaps I've upgraded players to players with good onboard DACs, but I have players that have nice outboard DACs and I don't feel the need.

I bought a Cambridge Audio Azur 840C. The onboard DAC in this one is one step up from the Cambridge Audio DAC thread also posted in this section. I like the forward and punchy presentation. I also dropped lots of money on it because you can access the DAC from two external inputs and use the DAC in the box to upsample anything from an MP3 (360k) to a DVD-A (96k/24 bit) to 192/24 with wonderful results.

As an aside, I can also recommend the Lexicon players as very good all-in-one universal players with built in DACs. The presentation isn't as forward as the DAC in the Cambridge 840C, but it's equally musical with a different presentation.
The Lexicon players are presently selling at bargain basement prices right now.

I'm not a reseller, just a fan.

The only problem is I spent all weekend listening instead of doing things I probably should've been getting done (like building grill frames for instance).

Dude, I would be lying if I told you I noticed they were missing at this point LOL.

Glad you like it. I am in the process of selling my denon cd player so I need a replacement. Been considering taking the/a leap to a used belcanto unit. Too much other crap to do right now though.

BTW, you have my only router bit HAHA

Hi guys, after add external DAC (Bel Canto e.DAC3) to my system, I have been happy with the sound, except one thing: some CD with copy protection gives me irregular tick. It annoys me much. (Ray Charles, Genius loves ..). I tried two CD players as transport. CEC was ticking but Oppo universal player was good. Anyone experienced similar to this? Bob

I'm also a recent convert to a good external DAC. Opens up the sound stage, expands the depth of the musical content, and separates out the instruments and vocals in about every track I have listened to.
