dowey 04-10-2009, 04:50 PM i recently went to see robyn hitchcock and the venus 3,i have been a robyn hitchcock fan for 15 some years the show was great! afterwards he was signing things talking to fans so i went up to him and said i appreciate you coming here, really enjoyed the show tonight, i dont have any money to buy anything but i own everything youve put out, he said wow that must weigh a ton, i said yes it actually does would you mind taking a picture with me? he said to me no i dont do that thats what my album covers are for.... hurt my damn feelings! he didnt seem to be having trouble signing the 30.00 posters people had bought! wtf would it really have been that big of a deal to get three seconds to snap a damn picture? i feel that was the least he could have done for a loyal fan.... anyone have a similar story?

That would be sufficient cause for my Robyn Hitchcock stuff would either be getting sold or in a landfill.
I can't count the times over the years that musicians have been more than happy to be gracious and talk to me at signings, as well having pictures taken with them. That's what my album covers are for, my ass.
dowey 04-10-2009, 05:29 PM thanks for the reply i kinda felt like i was making a big deal over it but everyone seems to be in agreement that it was a straight up dick move... go up to the average joe and say robyn hitchcock and 9 out of 10 your gonna get who? if it werent for people like me and the other fans he wouldnt exist....im trying hard to not let it ruin my appreciation of the music....
Andyman 04-10-2009, 05:31 PM Robyn who???
opt80 04-10-2009, 05:37 PM I own a lot of his stuff also. That would piss me off too.
mid-fi-ry 04-10-2009, 05:38 PM Robyn who???
Exactly! He's lucky he has people coming to the show in the first place.
On a nicer note, Willie Nelson is probably the most humble and kindest entertainer in all of the business. I have seen it with my own eyes willie will stand outside his bus after a gig and sign anything, snap pictures, shake hands until every last fan has been addressed. A true gentlemen.
spartanmanor 04-10-2009, 05:40 PM Yeah, not the best move on his part but hard to say what kind of experiences led up to him taking on this policy. BTW I really like Robyn Hitchcock's music.

Due to work related activities and certain relatives, My wife and I meet a lot of "famous" people. It is really not reasonable to ever ask them "just this once" type of favors. They get it constantly. If he snapped a picture with you, he'd be doing another few hundred and dissing those few hundred if he only took it with you. He's there specifically to sign the $30 posters. It is his job and what he is earning an income doing.
He'll do some simple banter with you, but don't try to take more than about ten seconds of his time.
Oh, and if you see him on the street or in a restaurant, ignore him. That is the best way to show respect for his time and privacy.
Being famous really, REALLY sucks after the novelty wears off.

FWIW, I'm one of the 9. I never heard of him.
My wife once had Meg Ryan give her a dirty look merely for admiring her baby. It is what my wife does around cute babies, but Meg thought, at the time, that she was being an "adoring fan". Meg was just having a bad day though. People are people - even famous people. My wife sitll loves her movies.
beans 04-10-2009, 05:51 PM I have some of his stuff and saw him once about 16 years ago. You understand he's a nut to begin with, right?
240sx4u 04-10-2009, 05:51 PM Who?
That does suck.

Thats exactly right. The 'big names' that aren't really big names these days shouldn't diss three seconds for taking a picture with them at a signing after the show. The people who tend to come to their shows these days is their old core fans, people who stayed fans for decades while the casual listeners moved on to the 'next big thing' and took their money with them. I've seen older acts like UFO, Robin Trower, April Wine, Denny Laine and the likes happy to let a fan snap a pic with them.
Would I bother someone famous (to me) if I weren't at one of their shows? Nope, they deserve to have their space and their personal privacy.... but if the guy just made money off of me and is standing right in front of me making more, I'd ask for a picture.

damn straight i wouldnt dare approach someone famous in public!
wadeus 04-10-2009, 06:00 PM Agreed, lame to not give a pic.
It is tax season though, maybe he was having some anxiety...just kidding.
I think many artists who are sort of in that middle status get kind of cranky about $ after a while. There is big time hierarchy in the music world...so RH may be one of those miserable SOB's who says "why am I not rich like...." "I am more clever than..."
NOT an excuse for him...straight up lame maneuver...you gotta be NICE to the people who pay to see you...

dowey 04-10-2009, 06:05 PM oh and get this peter buck from r.e.m. plays in the venus 3 he actually told me to ask peter he was good at taking pictures, peter was standing right next to him, i like rem as well but came to see robyn hitchcock....

I'm pretty cynical about the whole thing myself. I would never buy the poster and I would never stand in line to meet the guy. Most musicians are not really "normal" people anyway. I respect them for the quality of their show and ignore the rest. Regarding the poster signing, I am reminded of the character's attitudes about it in Galaxy Quest.
Andyman 04-10-2009, 06:15 PM Still seems lame.
Two years ago Jimmie Vaughn hung around and signed all sorts of CDs, LPs and took pictures with folks after his set at the Bob Dylan concert I took my daughter to. He shook my hand and signed my CD, "To Andy, Jimmie Vaughn"
And a few summers earlier, a bunch of us went and saw Richard Thompson at an outdoor street festival and he hung around for about 1/2 an hour or so after the show chatting with fans and signing stuff.
Robyn Who? needs to remember who's paying the bills....
RobRoy 04-10-2009, 06:18 PM Still seems lame.
Actually, I agree. But I think most performers are lame so I tend not to hold it against them.
Watch the movie Amadeus.
musichal 04-10-2009, 06:25 PM Hey, dowey, I'll diss him back for you by not buying any of his music for the next fifty years, and never having bought any previously that should make up for your investment. So go ahead and enjoy his music while I DH for you.
Least I can do - and I generally try to keep it at that.
centralflori 04-10-2009, 08:26 PM Exactly! He's lucky he has people coming to the show in the first place.

That's a great story, makes me like Willie even more. On a similar note, the wife and I went to see Janis Ian a couple of years ago. After the show anybody that had anything they wanted signed(up to 5 items per person) was allowed to come up on stage and she stayed til the last person was seen. She will always be one of our favorite artist. Not to mention she has an incredible stage presence, very engaging story teller explaining a lot about the songs and her personal thoughts in between numbers. She sold a bunch of stuff at her show with the proceeds going to a charity she had set up in honor of her deceased mother. IIRC proceeds were to give scholarships to underpriviledged youth in her mother's name.:ntwrthy:
pjsjr 04-10-2009, 09:08 PM Yeah, Robin who???
If Willie can do what he does, why can't what's his name???
People in their line of work need to remember the people in their line! Preston
DENNYDOG 04-10-2009, 09:12 PM The Allman brothers played a concert at a nearby casino a couple years back. A few of my friends work there and they said one of the guys could probably get some stuff signed for me. Come to find out later that they stole all the stuff people dropped off for them to sign. It kind of sucks because it reminds me of the bullshit everytime I hear one of their songs.
avionic 04-10-2009, 09:26 PM Never heard of the ungrateful SOB...

Sadly, that doesn't surprise me.

I'd say "uhh... I'm not on any of your covers with you."
What's that saying again - something about it being better not to meet your idols?

Apply this thought to Arlo Guthrie. Same thing, always a meet and greet after a show. I've met three generations of the Guthrie family as they once brought his daughter Sara Lee's newborn baby on stage after a show. For those who don't know Arlo is Woody Guthrie's son. If that doesen't ring a bell, never mind. Different thread....:scratch2:

spideyjack 04-11-2009, 06:38 AM You understand he's a nut to begin with, right?
I like ol Robyn, I am not sure what I would expect if I ever tried to talk to him though. I wouldn't take it personal, I am sure he has a lot of weird fans who think they "know him" and over the past million years he's been playing he has developed a criteria for what he will and won't do in a "meet and greet" situation. Or maybe he had a booger in his nose, or a zit or something.

That's odd, I would think they could get their own merch at wholesale.:scratch2:
Brett a 04-11-2009, 10:59 AM i recently went to see robyn hitchcock (...) , i said would you mind taking a picture with me? he said to me no i dont do that thats what my album covers are for.... hurt my damn feelings!
So you like the music of a guy who is a dick.
If I limited myself to the music of only virtuous people, I'd have no one to listen to but Willie, Arlo, John Coltrane and Leonard Cohen.
For a long time, I've found it necessary not to make assumptions about the social skills of the musicians I admire. It gets in the way of enjoying their art.
I think it hurt most back when I was a dead head to learn that my two favorite players, Phil Lash and Bill Kreutzman, were raging egomaniacal ass holes
resound 04-11-2009, 11:53 AM Robyn Hitchcock (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robyn_Hitchcock)
No wonder I've never heard of him.
I thought he was Alfreds son.
Never heard of him either.
For those that do know of him, Im sure he's great, and if he has notariety, Im sure he's tired after all these years.
Imagine the movie groundhog day except you never figure out how to snap out of it.
..
Fast_Eddie 04-11-2009, 12:12 PM You guys have never heard of Robyn Hitchcock? The unfortunate story asside (that really sucks!) you should check him out. Has some really great material.
Sandy G 04-11-2009, 12:27 PM Robyn Who ? Yeah, the guy oughta be a little more willin' to Dance w/who Brought him...Especially since he's not exactly on the tips of everyone's lips...

Heh,heh. One of my favorites.
I understand the actual premise of the story was that he relived
the day for something like 10,000 years. I've actually been to the square where they filmed that (Woodstock, IL.)
But yeah, I would maybe have a cranky day or two if I were him.

I didn't see the movie but when I see good old #7 I get a bad feeling. I grew up in the 50's and it was a dream to get mick's autograph. I had a chance to get it at a charity function in Baltimore back in the late 70's. Needless to say, Mick in his drunken splendor made it less than memorable.
On the other hand one of the nicest public figures ever is Brooks Robinson. We run in to him once in a while about town and I could go on and on about what a gracious person he is.
Im a little too old to be a star chaser but I can say I have had some nice conversations with Dave Cousins, Dave Lambert, Richard Thompson and Richard Sinclair over the last few years.
qdrone 04-11-2009, 07:48 PM :thmbsp:Thats probably why he wouldn't let you take his picture with him.
davidk5 04-11-2009, 07:59 PM You know what i have to agree he was being an ass , I have met so many musicians & about 10% of them are asses like that , never mind the fact you own all his albums , but the fact you bought a ticket & he's doing a signing , yeh , yeh , he wants to make $$$$$ so do we all , one photo would'nt have killed him.
It's one thing if he was eating dinner , but he was actually hanging out signing stuff .
I have also run into the "Buy the artists cd & meet them" , screw that , i allready bought it & am not buying another for $20 or $25 , FYE is famous for showing up at shows & pulling this , a quick tip , if you know this is going to happen , bring the current cd , case & all , get in the signing line & they will check & ask if you bought it , pull out your allready bought cd you have & hold it up & 99% of time they fall for it ..... if they kick you out raise a stink .
:D

redcoates7 04-12-2009, 11:46 PM Some musicians/actors/authors/whatever don't want to have their pictures taken wth fans, and that's their business. I'm sure he would have signed a record or a poster for you, but he's not into the photos. That doesn't make him a dick, or deserving of failure, or any of the other ridiculous things I've seen mentioned on this thread.
You pay for the record, the ticket, and the performance....you don't always get a free photo op in the bargain.
soundweasel 04-13-2009, 12:07 PM That's odd, I would think they could get their own merch at wholesale.:scratch2:
I'm hoping DennyDog was talking about the venue operators, not the band's crew. It would suck big time if the ABB crew was taking stuff from people. :sigh:
DennyDog, can you clarify if it was people working for the venue, not the band? :scratch2:
rooster18 04-13-2009, 12:41 PM Always had a good time at BOC shows, Buck is very accessable to his fans. The last time they were in Phoenix, he took my wife, stepdaughter, and me backstage and we got to meet the whole band (including Allen, who is very reclusive). Well, except for Eric. After the show is over, he generally goes backstage and calls his wife to talk. Can't blame him. He has a very successful marriage for a rock star because of that.
Great guys, Buck rules.
