Outside of his work with Steely Dan I wasn't familiar with his work. I picked up 3 of his LPs at GW recently. I'm giving it it first listen and reading the back of the jacket and I get to this -
"This album was almost killed by a gunshot, but it was saved by God, prayers, friends, doctors, ..." So I wikipedia'd him and holy crap. Someone shot him in the throat in the middle of making this album. Totally random. Talk about comebacks.
The album has it's moments, but is way too new-agey, smooth jazz to become a regular in my rotation.

Sapphire Blue is really good. My favorite is "Live in Tokyo", a collaboration with Robben Ford.

Singing / Playing, 1973 is my favorite. Not so overly refined as his later stuff, but still smooth.

OK, first let me admit basic prejudice - I'm a HUGE Larry Carlton fan...
That being said, On Solid Ground has a lot going for it IMHO.
First of all, he does a great cover of Steely Dan's 'Josie'.
And while a couple of the tracks on it ARE a bit too smooth for my taste (Sea Space in particular), I think this recording has one of the GREAT Carlton compositions on it. 'Chapter II'. One of the loveliest things he's ever laid down!
The reference to a gunshot goes back to an incident he went through - as he was leaving the studio one night, he got shot right outside the door!
