View Full Version : Any LPs you like the scratches on?
pmsummer 04-11-2009, 07:28 PM I've got some LPs that I bought new back in the late '60s, LPs that have been to many a wild party, lovingly abused (but abused none the less). Room-mates, ex-wives, cross-country migrations, depressants and stimulants (legal and not so much), portable record players, budding audiophile TTs, boxed in hot moving vans and truck beds, shuffled and stacked.
I've owned this one for 40+ years. It may be in the worse condition of any LP I still play, with myriad scratches all over the surface. I know every pop and scratch (but no skips). It's surface noise has become part of the music, conjuring up memories my CD copy can't.
You got anything similar? A good record you've dogged with life's patina, but love it all the more even for the damage?

GRATEFUL DEAD
The Grateful Dead
Warner Bros. gold label
meggy 04-11-2009, 07:50 PM The first one that comes to mind is my Who - Meaty Beaty Big & Bouncy decca 79184 has it's share of pops & clicks plus a skip that won't jump over in I can See For Miles, right on "I can see for miles". Which is permenately burned into my head every time I hear that song anywhere I brace for the skip (that isn't going to come).
Created the skip during a college Tanqueray & Tonic party where we were conducting experiments in rolling half-barrels down a staircase that had a turn in the stairs.
SpeakerLabFan 04-12-2009, 01:03 AM The one that comes to mind is The Best of the James Gang Featuring Joe Walsh. I have a few clean back up copies now but still have my original James Gang LPs. That one has been through alot, I don't have any memory of ever hearing Funk 49 as a smooth ride but it somehow always fit right in, along with the Yer Album title.

Charlie Parker
Archetypes
MGM
I have played the "crapola" out this LP. It's the first one I ever owned, given to me by my father around age 5. It was jacked up on one of those flip-down, suitcase BSR changers for years. This was new when I got it. As a teen, I repaired the spine myself (which had split and become illegible, at some point) with a typewriter, some paper, tape and an exacto knife. I've had ample opportunity to replace it with the original Verve issue "The Essential Charlie Parker". However, I never have. I did, however, painstakingly record it with a linear contact stylus (miraculous what that can do), various anti-skate settings for different tracks and a PC to manually and tediously remove the most egregious pops and clicks. Still, other clicks, pops and track wear noise remains. I wouldn't have it any other way. Sadly, this is the one record I own that I don't play anymore for fear of totally disintegrating the first track on side one. It's probably got about five plays left and I need to save those in case my backups fail.
asoundhound 04-12-2009, 02:10 AM all of my records have a long scratch that starts at the outer edge, and spirals towards the center. for some reason, my stylus always seems to ride in the scratch. i love every minute of it!

Cadillac Kid 04-12-2009, 02:50 AM Some of my favorite records are from my radio days and have 'cue burn' . A short whine at the beginning of the track caused by years of manually spinning the disk backwards while in audition with the tone arm lowered. They are now a warm reminder of those fun days.
MJSNet 04-12-2009, 11:50 AM Neneh Cherry ~ Raw Like Sushi
(Oh, those scratches...) :D
Fisherdude 04-12-2009, 12:18 PM Nope.
I do agree with the memories thing, it's why I have so many lp's.
For me, though, there's a big difference between still having an lp that lived through some killer parties back in the day, vs actually listening to it. It's one thing to actually hold it in your hand, remember how long you've owned it, look at the Ripple stain on the cover from that hot blond with the big guns that you were dating at the time, and the doobie burn on one corner...
But if I'm right in the middle of my nostalgic daydreams while listening to an old lp, a bunch of pops and clicks yanks me right OUT of the mood.
onepixel 04-12-2009, 01:03 PM I do like scratches on some of the older albums. Not so much as a nostalgic thing but more for the acoustics. Mono jazz 78s just wouldn't have that same feel without them.
But then again, I really enjoy original old pressings because "life's patina" has a way of adding a wonderful sense of "being."
Ocean92 04-18-2009, 01:43 PM Yes, I'd miss the needle getting stuck if I had another copy of the Rolling Stones' 'Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out'...

(Oh, those scratches...) :D
I thought I was the only one who used Neneh Cherry as a... ummm..."soundtrack" to the events going on. "Trout"....ohh boy...!
Speakerbox 04-18-2009, 03:33 PM ALL of my albums by Al Green
AnalogDigit 04-18-2009, 05:00 PM On some 45's I have, there are a few clicks and pops. Mostly top 40 from the 70's when I have them as a teen. Sometimes when I'm in the mood, I drag them out and stack them on the changer, cut down on the treble a bit, boost the bass a little bit, put on the headphones and I'm back to being 16 years old again listening to records in the basement! :music:
similost 04-18-2009, 05:06 PM My Victrola records.. just makes the mechanical sound a lot more mechanical.. Like what fun would it be to watch a turn of the century silent movie without all the crap on the film and jumps? Same thing with Victrola records when listening..
Old_Tech 04-18-2009, 11:29 PM No again...
thedelihaus 04-18-2009, 11:57 PM A mangled copy of Blue Train damaged during an uninhibited and passionate sex romp with a raver chick 15 years ago...
It was stepped on and gouged (belt buckles?) as both our knickers were around our ankles....
shimniok 04-19-2009, 12:40 AM I have a bunch of old LPs I got used when getting into vinyl & classical as a high school student. All those old Concert Hall recordings sound awful with noise, scratches, rolled off highs and non-existent lows, but... I love 'em all. And play 'em every so often. Likewise I can't bring myself to part with my RCA mono "Italian" Munch/Boston SO. Worn to heck, noisy... love it. That was probably one of the first records I bought. Likewise my Schumann Symphony No 1 that is in far better shape but still has its flaws. I know, I inherited the wear, but I guess this is the stack of records I've kept for 20 years, and dragged up to Denver from Tucson. I've gotten rid of records, but these, my first forays into exploring Classical, are the ones I'd hate to lose.
musichal 04-19-2009, 02:54 AM No, but only because I made that mistake of getting rid of vinyl years ago, and only began reacquiring the last few months. My favorite shirt does have a good many holes in it, though.
