I was going to skip ACL tonight, because the ACL website schedule had some afrobeat political activist listed as tonights performance, but lo and behold when I was flipping channels 'My Morning Jacket' was on stage, playing songs from 2008's 'Evil Urges' release!
If you are a fan of MMJ, you know that the band has taken quite a turn from the music they were making on their earlier albums, and with their release of the highly acclaimed 'Z' a few years ago they showed us that they were confident and ready to expand on their musical styles, while still allowing their love of music to transcend the efforts of earlier releases.
If MMJ is new to you, or you have not listened 'Z' you owe it to yourself to check them out, 'Evil Urges' is a keeper in my book, and yes it is available on vinyl!

And it gets better!
'Soundstage' is on right after ACL, and tonights artist is 'Umphrey's McGee', a terrific jam band that hails from Chicago!
PBS rocks!
Second that! MMJ is so awesome!!

I agree on MMJ, but "Chumpfrees"? Nawwww. Tired act. They are drawing the frat boys in now. Makes the DMB shows more palateable.
You should have seen the Evil Urges tour live last fall.

Man, you ain't kidding.
I caught the first show of the U.S. Evil Urges tour on the riverfront in Louisville. I think it's got a permanent place in my "Top 5 Shows Ever" list. :thmbsp:

I've seen UM quite a few times. Just can't get into them anymore. Drunken frat boys is the crowd they draw now. (I get to see them 2x more times this summer, they are opening for DMB at Alpine, I work there).
I'm the same way with Widespread Panic. I have all their CD's just can't get excited about them for some reason.

The light show they had was the best I have ever seen.
Jim James is something else. I know I am never going to see them in a small venue again until they get on the state fair circuit in about 20 years.

This thread got me thinking about the first time I ever saw My Morning Jacket. That thread on My Morning Jacket got me thinking about the first time I saw them. It was 2004 and I'd been rocking out "It Still Moves" for almost a year.
Yeah, I was a latecomer.
Anyway, it was the Vote For Change tour and they were slated to play first, before Jurassic 5, Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals, and DMB. The Jacket came on and tore through an amazing, psychedelic half-hour set in a nearly empty E.J. Nutter Center.
It was over nearly before I could pick my jaw up off the floor. The rest of the show was a wretched disappointment, but almost anything would have been after that. I won't get into it, but I'll just say that if I ever go to a DMB show again, it'll because they've agreed to keep their fans from attending.
