Hello I was asking questions the other day about the Dual 1009 a few days ago that I had just purchased on the bay. It came today with a busted platform that I was planning on replacing with some quarter sawn cherry that I have, The platter was still on the shaft and the headshell was still in good shape. The turntable wouldnt spin so I began to disassemble it. I worked on it for awhile and finally got the platter spinning. Put on a record and it played really well except for one channel. I then listened very closely to the noise it was making and there was a rubbing sound. Took platter off it had a brass washer underneathe the shaft. It was rubbing ever so slightly. Does it need another washer to prevent it from rubbing the metal surface? It works in all speeds perfectly and the motor is super quiet. I will need to clean it up some more to make the automatic parts work. It doesent shut off either when the tonearm is returned to the clip. HELP

Clean the headshell contacts with Noxon 7 cleaner (both sets of contacts). Replace the patch cables. Sound should now be ok.
Spin the platter by hand with the motor off and see if you have the noise. Check the 7MM nuts securing the platter shaft and ensure that they are tight.

Thanks Bill, One of the 7mm nuts was a little lose. Tightened it can't hear slight dragging sound anymore. replaced one of the patch cables and can now hear music in both speakers. Would deoxit be okay for the headshell contacts? will get some rest now and begin on the automatic stuff in the morning. Thanks again, Richard

These are metal contacts that need polishing - deoxit may work, but I find that they need scrubbing with the Noxon and a Q tip.

Where is the best place to start to get the auto parts working? When you put the switch in start mode it seems to just lock the mechanism up. You can unlock it but you have to move stuff by hand underneath. I would really like to get this thing running as a gift for wife for anniversary #46 which is about the age of this turntable.

Hello again. I've been working on this all day off and on. I only have 2 problems left to get it working good. [1} I can't get the screw adjusted to make the tonearm hit the record in the right place to start. I have adjusted screw like the manual says. It gets close to the edge but drops just before it gets there. {2} It won't shut the motor off when the tonearm goes back to the rest. The manual says the capacitor could be shorted out and to get a replacement. What do you think? Richard

The motor shut off on my 1229 didn't work at first either, but it came around after I had cleaned and relubed the linkage points. I wouldn't assume it is the capacitor unless every other possibility is ruled out.
I had a 1009 a few years ago for a couple of months. Loved it. It was under warranty from a place I bought it from and since they couldn't fix a problem it developed, they gave me my money back, but it was hard to let it go.

Thanks Illinoissteve for your input. Maybe I'm a little impatient. I worked on the switch in the little box and finally got it to move but it still wont shut it off. Maybe everything is still too gummed up.
