spartanmanor 04-15-2009, 09:58 AM Heart Rocks! I love Dreamboat Annie another great album.
70salesguy 04-15-2009, 10:13 AM Actually, Magazine was their 4th album.
Their first release of note was in 76 with Dreamboat Annie. This album was huge with "Crazy on You" and "Magic Man".
Little Queen and Dog and Butterfly followed.
There's some interesting history about the Magazine album. There are several versions of this album. Do a search of AK forums about this album and you will find a wealth of information.
Heart was pretty big after Crazy on You and Magic Man got airplay.
Their popularity has been pretty long-lived!
I saw Heart in late 76 or early 77. Again in the 80s, again in the 90s and twice since 2000!
Lots of opinions about which is their best album, but my favorites are Heart (self-titled) and Bad Animals.
Enjoy!
Tarl Of Gor 04-15-2009, 10:20 AM I saw Heart in '76 - they opened for The Beach Boys.
Arkay 04-15-2009, 10:23 AM Saw them at Cal Jam II, in the late seventies. Excellent! :thmbsp:
Ransomed 04-15-2009, 11:07 AM I actually listened to this album last night (on CD)!! "Devil delight" is somewhat of a suprise-- straight-up Sabbathy doom rock! My system is real simple, adcom gfa 555, gfp 555, denon cd player and big AR speakers, it sounded great.

Lots of legal problems concerning this release. It was released after Heart left their label without their approval, and then rereleased after an agreement between the band and the label. Some different tracks on the rerelease as well as different vocals on some of the songs. I paid a mint for the first release when it came out, I remember! Its also floating around as a neat looking picture disc, one of the few I own.
Longtime fan, saw 'em live 6 times, but my favorite show was for the Dog and Butterfly tour when Ann was young, slender and unafraid to turn around and shake her booty for all to see ;)

A good one to pick up on vinyl - great rendition of "Love Alive" :)
70salesguy 04-15-2009, 11:51 AM I purchased the much disputed and often discussed Magazine album they day it went on sale at my local record store, at regular retail price.
A few days later I came back in the store (a small local record retailer) and the owner said to me "I'm supposed to tell everyone that bought the Heart album to bring it back, refund their money and send them back!".
He explained what was going on. I just smiled and told him that "I lost it". He laughed and said that was mild compared to other responses he had received.
Later, I acquired the "legitimate" release and even later, a re-release of the album. There is a significantly different "mix" on the disputed version. I like the way "Heartless" sounds better on the disputed.
The first time I saw them was in the auditorium of New Hanover High School in Wilmington NC in late 76 or early 77. Back then Ann was the star and Nancy wore a simple white dress and played guitar. Quite a bit different than the Heart we would see in the 80s!
jsarsfield 04-15-2009, 12:11 PM I love Heart .... Ann Wilson has one best set of pipes in music. I have around 5 or 6 LP's of theirs and they are all good
70salesguy 04-15-2009, 01:18 PM I apologize for the bad quality of these pictures, but here they are.
The first picture (left to right) is the rear cover of the "disputed" album.
The second is the version released after the "disputed" version.
The third is a later release. Note the presence of a UPC Code.
The fourth is a detail showing the disclaimer on the "disputed" version.
The first one is the one desired by collectors.
ekmanning5 04-15-2009, 03:09 PM Saw them right after their debut album was released at the Audatorium Theater in Chicago. They were doing that Nillsson song (Without You?) and during a quiet part in the song somebody yelled out "I love you Annie!" at the top of their lungs. Broke her right up.
Mrs. Manning and I tried to see them a couple of summers ago at the local ribfest. There must have been 25,000 people there and we had to give it up. Gonna make a little better effort this summer when they play the same venue.
Ed in Tx 04-15-2009, 03:50 PM Here's a clear picture of the back of my 1977 disputed version that was pulled from the stores. Is a Dutch import. My preferred version of Magazine.

John C. 04-15-2009, 10:14 PM Don't forget about "Rock The House Live!" and for best results hunt down the import vinyl LP.
OvenMaster 04-15-2009, 10:23 PM My Lord, it is impossible for me to pick out one favorite album. I'm fond of Dog & Butterfly, Private Audition, and Bebe Le Strange. But the best sounding ones are a tossup: Dreamboat Annie and my CBS Masterworks half-speed mastered Little Queen.
*sighs* Decisions, decisions.
Is it my imagination, or do the Capitol LPs really have lousier treble than those from CBS/Portrait?
Tom

Have finished Magazine and am half way through Little Queen
(Sylvan Song/Dream of the Archer as I type). Lord what a great group!

Rock the house is a cool album , they taped that about 15 minutes from my house .
HEART is a great band , allthough that last live dvd they did "dreamboat annie live" was kinda weak , I'm hoping the new studio album is gonna be great !
Dr. Music 04-16-2009, 03:42 PM I like the way "Heartless" sounds better on the disputed.

Agreed! The original take of "Heartless" sounds MUCH better, Ann's vocals are more passionate. The rerelease sounds like shes just covering it without any real interest. I think they were too concerned with how precise the album sounded on the rerelease.... I'll take the original over the 'official' release any day.
I know this sounds insensitive ( I LOVE Ann and Nancy, met them on the tour for their self titled 80's album) but had Ann been able to keep her weight in check I think Heart could have become MUCH bigger than they already were. The nature of the PR beast, I think. Their first five albums were solid, IMO as good a track record as most any artist could have. I liked Private Audition and even Passionworks when they were released, but I was a huge fanboy in those days... they don't hold up well in the Heart canon.
Dynacophil 04-16-2009, 03:51 PM Hi
what is really the difference?
Blues Medley?
my says: "Mushroom Records regrets that a contractual dispute..."

On the surface, not much. As I stated earlier, the tracks are different takes - "Heartless" sounds MUCH better on the original release. Ann's voice is too controlled on the approved version, like she was merely walking through the song with no desire to even be in the studio...my guess is she was begrudgingly fulfilling the agreement with Mushroom when she sang it the second time around, and you can hear it. On the original release she sounded like she meant it, letting loose passionately on the vocals.
Dynacophil 04-16-2009, 05:04 PM Fine - my copy is a German Electrola in excellent condition :)
mojito150 04-16-2009, 05:05 PM Heart played a private concert for my company in February...they are still amazing...as if their voices were frozen time.

For me the best album has always been Dog and Butterfly. Straight On, High Time, Dog and Butterfly... there's not really a bad song on it, but the clincher for me is "Mistral Wind", which might be my favorite Heart song.

Sounds like a nice little collectible, Phil :)
golana 04-16-2009, 09:06 PM Anybody ever here Nancys slo accoustic stuff on the "Elizabethtown" soundtrack. Man she she can flat out play.
70salesguy 04-16-2009, 09:46 PM By the time the self-titled Heart and Bad Animals albums were out, they were definitely doing the "big hair" thing.
I loved it. I saw them from the 1st row and it was fabulous. I have the VHS video of their videos from this era and of songs from these 2 albums. It became obvious that they were trying to "hide" Ann's weight to maintain an "image". Ann talks about this in a special I saw one time.
What amazes me about Heart is that they sort of "faded out" after the initial success of Dreamboat Annie, Magazine and Little Queen, they come back "reinvented" with Heart and Bad Animals.
After a few years they "faded" again. Then in 89 (I think) they come back again with Brigade!
Their appeal just doesn't seem to go away! I've seen them twice in the last few years at the House of Blues in MB. After a song or two to warm up, both Ann and Nancy sounded in fine form. Nancy even threw in a few "kicks" like back in the 80s!
As much as I like Dreamboat Annie, Brigade and others, the songs from Heart and Bad Animals are my favorites.
I have the Heart album on the Mobile Fidelity Ultradisc as well as all the original vinyl releases.
Ann is one of my top 5 female vocalists.
No apologies for being a big Heart fan for over 30 years.
this thread's got me fired up for some

The weight gain was pretty substantial and seemed to happen pretty fast....she didn't look like the same person between the woman I saw on the Bebe Le Strange tour as opposed to the self titled album tour. It wouldn't surprise me if it was due in part to the breakup within the band during those years. She still had the pipes, but I'm guessing they would have fared better had she been in better shape. I know she was pretty defensive about her weight in interviews of the period, and that she looks much better these days, having gone with band surgery some years ago.
And I can relate... I've been fighting my freakin' weight since I was a kid!
