View Full Version : Green Day's new album: 21st Century Breakdown
Duffinator 04-16-2009, 12:26 AM Green Day's new album is scheduled for release on May 15th (http://www.antimusic.com/news/09/march/26Green_Days_New_CD_Set_For_Release.shtml), almost five years after American Idiot. I thought American Idiot was brilliant and I'm really looking forward to this release. IMO it will be hard to follow-up American Idiot but they have been working on it for a few years so I'm hoping it will be decent. Anyone else looking forward to the release? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/21st_Century_Breakdown)
AnalogDigit 04-16-2009, 12:45 AM I'm a old fart, but I really like Green Day. Their sound reminds me of the early days of punk rock.
Duffinator 04-16-2009, 12:50 AM I saw them in concert in September 2005 during the Bullet in a Bible Tour. I don't think I was the oldest guy there but close. :D I sat next to a mom who brought her daughter and friend to the concert. She did not have a good time. I don't know why it was the most fun I have had at a concert in years. Tre Cool was killing it.
davidk5 04-16-2009, 02:57 AM I like Green day , last album allthough very un-original in spots , it was a really great album!!
I heard the new single & was pretty bummed with it , sounded more EMO/Blink 182 to me , hope the rest of the album is killer .
They are re-relasing a lot of the older albums on vinyl this saturday for "record store day " some come with Bonus 45's
Duffinator 04-18-2009, 11:04 AM I heard "Know Your Enemy" a couple of times this week and it didn't grab me like most of the singles from AI. I'm still hopeful that the album will deliver some good songs.
Snade 04-18-2009, 11:40 AM Thanks for the heads-up, Duffer.
As you know, I also loved American Idiot - a rare rock album where every song is good and they are all musically integrated almost like a rock opera.
I will be buying their new CD.
Yes, and I am also an old guy fan of Green Day.
Vinyl Addict 04-18-2009, 11:49 AM I like Green day , last album allthough very un-original in spots , it was a really great album!!

Here's the Green Day vinyl reissue schedule.:thmbsp:

Duffinator 05-03-2009, 08:31 PM More concert dates have been added and they'll be in Sac Town on August 24th. And only 12 more days until the album is released. :thmbsp: The song Know Your Enemy is starting to get a lot of air play locally.
rooster18 05-03-2009, 08:55 PM Whereas I disagree with their politics on the album, I have to say that "American Idiot" was a good one. They have a knack for writing well, and they sound like they truly "feel" their lyrics, which gives them a dose of "genuinity"(is that even close to a word?) that so many artists today don't have. As far as newer bands go, they are pretty close to the top of the heap. Good stuff, and I'll keep listening to their albums as long as they keep making them.
Keep in mind, that if the new one "misses", and isn't quite up to snuff, that everyone has a clunker or two in their career. They set the bar pretty high with that last one.
rooster.
Duffinator 05-03-2009, 09:11 PM They set the bar pretty high with that last one.
rooster.Yes they did.
BigManAndy 05-03-2009, 11:39 PM i will check it out. i kind of lost track/interest of Green Day after Nimrod. but im slowly getting back into them. i picked up the remasters of 39/smooth, Kerplunk, and Dookie. Insomniac comes out may 19th and will be picking that up on vinyl as the rest.
Doofus101 05-04-2009, 11:58 AM I have all their work, and will continue to support them through cd purchases. They are a great band, can't wait...............:thmbsp:
KeninDC 05-04-2009, 12:05 PM My daughter is 7. She recognized Green Day when they popped up on the Palladia channel last night.
I dare say, Green Day appeals to many generations. Even older cats like me that grew up on the Jam and Clash.

Ditto!
My cousin and his 14 year old son turned me onto AI this winter. I had never listened to the whole album. It has been living in my CD changer in my car since January. It really is a great album. I look forward to the new release, as well as picking up their older albums.
I was listening to The Clash and The Ramones for years and still don't know how I missed Green Day the first time around.
NeedForSpeed 05-04-2009, 03:07 PM Have read it's gonna be a good one. Guess we'll see.
Duffinator 05-04-2009, 03:24 PM My daughter is 7. She recognized Green Day when they popped up on the Palladia channel last night.
I dare say, Green Day appeals to many generations. Even older cats like me that grew up on the Jam and Clash.I have seven year old boy/girl twins and my daughter really likes Wake Me Up When September Ends. I don't let her listen to the whole album though.
finnbow 05-04-2009, 07:58 PM I hope this is a good one. I'm sure my 14 year old son will let me know. I'm also an old fart with tastes that include Green Day and old punk (nothing's better than the Clash, of course). The Palladia Green Day concert a few weeks back was great. It's probably still playing, catch it.
Sam Cogley 05-05-2009, 11:25 AM I'm going to have to check this one out. I saw Green Day live a few times when they were still working their way up, early in the "Dookie" era. They've been a favorite for a long time, and I loved "American Idiot."
bbb777 05-05-2009, 11:55 AM i'm not really a fan of their new stuff. Waaay too political for me. Their old stuff is good though. I think a lot of people forgot how good of an album "Insomniac" is. I feel like that is almost their forgotten album.
When is the official release date for the vinyl re-release of that?
Also how do their new re-releases sound?
Duffinator 05-16-2009, 11:07 AM OK who's got it and what do you think of it?
I bought it on my way home from work yesterday and have listened to it one time. So far I'm liking it a lot. I'll get a chance to listen to it a couple of more times today as I take a long drive to and from the Bay Area later this afternoon.
abpeep 05-16-2009, 01:07 PM Was not a fan but when I first heard some of American Idiot, I picked it up and was somewhat surprised that I enjoyed most of it. Waiting to hear some of the new one.

resqguy 05-17-2009, 01:45 PM I agree with the political comments in this thread, but I wanted to add that Green Day seems to be attempting to bring back the "album" concept again. This is a good thing. The concept of CDs containing a few singles and all the rest being filler is getting old.
Snade 05-17-2009, 01:51 PM Watched Green Day on SNL last night. Liked the songs and their performance - old school rock, nothing fancy. Plan to pick up the new CD at Target later today.
Cheers, Snade (old guy fan of Green Day)
Snade 05-17-2009, 05:29 PM Picked it up at Target this afternoon for 10 bucks on sale.
So far I also like it a lot. I had to listen to American Idiot about three times before I really started to like it and expect the same with this one.
Played it on my best CD setup that includes my Allison CD-8 speakers and Carver separates and Philips CD player, this system can really rock.
Cheers, Snade

I dare say, Green Day appeals to many generations. Even older cats like me that grew up on the Jam and Clash.
You're absolutely correct about that. Yesterday, I was playing cuts from American Idiot and my daughter recognized more than a few as being played on Radio Disney. Sadly enough, that gave them more "cred" as far as she was concerned.
As for 21st Century Breakdown, I picked up the download from Amazon yesterday for $4.99. I can't post links from my phone, but I have a direct link on my review site (link below) if anyone needs it. I haven't gotten all the way through it yet, and although I like it, it seems to follow a formula very similar to what was used for the brilliant American Idiot.
qboneus 05-18-2009, 06:11 PM hehe,
GD actually stayed in a current co-worker's basement "on the way up"
I have seen them several times in their early years and I used to like GD but then they became to political and critical of the 'idiots' buying their music.:thumbsdn::thumbsdn:
No thanks!!! I bought the album for music, NOT a lecture.
I won't be buying this one because I prefer not to pay to be lectured by my music.
tal
hypertone 05-18-2009, 06:38 PM I loved Kerplunk and Dookie. I don't really like anything after that though. I agree their newer stuff is too political, and is a really bad casualty of The Loudness War. I just can't get into the sound. There is a lack of dynamics in both the audio quality, and the performance.
Maybe I'm just getting old, but I also feel the same way about Weezer. They were one of the best bands of the 90's with brilliant song writing. Now they are singing songs about eating pork and beans....
I saw a TV performance by Greenday recently. They were playing one of their new songs, and I thought it was their worst yet. They really wrote some great songs in the 90's. It's funny how creativity is not something you can develop over time. It's either there or it isn't. IMHO...
Snade 05-18-2009, 07:23 PM Green Day, too political ??
This is rock music. The rock music I grew up on was about drugs, sex, love and politics - usually a rant against whoever was in the power. But I was not analyzing the lyrics of classic rock back in the day. Just enjoying it.
I could care less about Green Day's politics - this album rocks.
Cheers, Snade
Duffinator 05-19-2009, 12:28 AM I could care less about Green Day's politics - this album rocks. :thmbsp: Both politics and religion have been central in their past two albums. While I don't agree with most of their politics I still enjoy their music. Let's see how many rock bands, or any musicians, never had politics in their music. I'll let you know when I think of one.......:scratch2:
Duffinator 05-19-2009, 12:37 AM I haven't gotten all the way through it yet, and although I like it, it seems to follow a formula very similar to what was used for the brilliant American Idiot.I look forward to your review. I too think American Idiot was brilliant and is easily my favorite album of the current decade. I still can't get enough of the song Jesus of Suburbia. I haven't anticipated an album release this much since U2's Uchtung Baby was released as the first full studio follow up to The Joshua Tree. While I'm enjoying 21st Century a lot it's a tall order to top AI.
Duffinator 05-21-2009, 04:10 PM The new CD is not available at Wal Mart. (http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5gI3tEiSlpfDVROEVdLGRF8-zxrRwD98AJOEG0)

sfox52 05-21-2009, 09:06 PM Still about Green Day, screw the politics- I just listened to a 30 second clip of GD doing a cover of the Who's "A Quick One", evidently a bonus track on the new release. I always loved the original (and the 'oo!) It sounded like a solid rendition.
zenith2134 05-21-2009, 09:07 PM Sorry, Duff, my error. Didn't mean to derail the thread. I should not have commented since I haven't heard the material.
Back on track...

zenith2134 05-21-2009, 09:12 PM Not a prob, dude. I realize this is a poor excuse, but I had a rough day and almost wrecked my ride on the way home because of a cellphone driver...grr. On top of that I was starvin for a decent meal.
You know, I used to really dig Green Day. Dookie, in particular, which I have on cassette. Very good album.

I also found this bonus track on Itunes and downloaded it for the car. I must say that while they don't really put a fresh spin on the tune, I'm really enjoying it nonetheless. They sound like they are definitely big fans of The Who.
vegabass25 05-22-2009, 11:13 PM A friend burnt me the album and let me say I can understand why people like green day but I hated the album.
Duffinator 05-22-2009, 11:23 PM A friend burnt me the album and let me say I can understand why people like green day but I hated the album.Well it's obvious that it didn't sound good because it was burnt and not burned. Crispy CDs never sound good. ;)

Art K. 05-23-2009, 09:57 AM I bought AI a couple of years ago and still haven't listened to it. One of these days when I'm in the mood I'll give it a listen, I'll probably own the new one before I listen to AI...lol!
Also have Radiohead "In Rainbows" and Neil Young's "Chrome Dreams" and haven't listened to either. I have to be in the right mood to listen music other than jazz or classical.

One of these days when I'm in the mood I'll give it a listen, I'll probably own the new one before I listen to AI...lol!Interesting. While GD has their roots in punk think of AI as power pop. Nothing hard core about it IMO. Check it out sometime and decide for yourself.
Snade 05-23-2009, 12:44 PM I had the new CD cranked in the garage yesterday, late afternoon. Probably the third time I've listened to it. This time I focused on the second half of the CD.
Overall I like it but it's not as good as AI which I agree was one of the best rock releases of the past 10 years.
I'll keep listening to the new CD. The song "Gloria" is terrific and entire CD is good, just not blown away by it like American Idiot.
Cheers, Snade
Autobot 06-28-2009, 07:19 PM I have had the 180g double LP for about 5 days now and played every day and it is amazing it has grown on me with every play
dont have the CD version but the vinyl is dead quiet [pressed in the Netherlands] and very well done.
sonics are off the hook and the music is well Green Day fans will love it.
Rock on.

I think that's what is unique about the latest Green Day releases, they get better and better after repeated listening.
Not many rock or pop albums released these days do that.
I'm liking this Green Day album more and more. :thmbsp:

the sound and the stuff they did, the recording technicians went all out like they did with American Idiot there is some really cool recording techniques that make it a lot of fun to listen to.
I dont know all the songs or which one it is yet but there is one where, they put the guitar right in your face it sounded like the guitar :guitar: was plugged directly to my amps.

Your quote below pretty much sums up this album. I like it a lot but it sounds too familiar, too much like AI. While IMO it would be difficult for any of their future material to live up to the AI standard I'm still enjoying 21st Century Breakdown a lot.
"As soon as you drop the needle on 21st Century Breakdown, you're reminded of American Idiot. Lots of muted vocals followed by crashing guitars and drums--they employ this so much, that at times it starts to feel a bit formulaic. "

Zekeman 07-18-2009, 11:19 AM My Son got us (my Wife and I) into GD several years ago.
Snade, you are right the new album grows on you big time especially after seeing them live ...We saw them last Monday at the United Center. I was moderately excited prior to going. When they started, you could tell it was going to be quite good. The place was packed. Everyone stood the entire show! They were fantastic. ...probably one of the best live shows I have ever seen!! They sounded fantastic and Billie Joe is hilarious!! Throws around A LOT of F-bombs and never stops moving.
Duffinator 10-09-2009, 02:54 PM Horseshoes and Handgrenades kicks ass at about 100 db. I like the nod to Them (Gloria) at the end. This must have been the type of song Maxell had in mind when they made their classic poster.
icenine 10-09-2009, 03:28 PM This album will stand the test of time very well....
Duffinator 10-09-2009, 10:43 PM I've been listening to 21st a lot and starting thinking I liked it better than American Idiot. So I listened to AI a few times through while driving to and from work. After listening to both of them I still like AI better but 21st is very close. I give the nod to AI for being a bit edgier although it is more political. Oh and because the song Jesus of Suburbia is fantastic. 21st seems a bit more pop oriented but if it had come before AI I might choose it as the better album. Regardless both are excellent works of pop/rock/punk music.
wadeus 10-10-2009, 02:15 PM My stepson got it...it's good, at least they are keeping rock alive in the pop-crap wasteland. The guitars sound amazing, I think...production in general sounds great to my ears.
kneeOhFight 10-10-2009, 02:18 PM torn clothes, fake biker chains, makeup and prissiness do not a punk make....GD is something, I'm not quite sure what, but punk?
Mmike 10-10-2009, 02:37 PM Green Day is not punk in ANY sense of the word and makes those of us that are pissed off:nono:. They are a decent little band with driveling nasal sounds and a good beat but mostly a groupie type following kind of band. If you hear one of their songs you can id them instantly BUT that's NOT bad but they aren't a very diverse band live. I think they hold up to many bands out there live except to Pearl Jam and Tull where the dinosaurs blow them offstage.... Look forward to my Amazon order monday..
-Mike:smoke:
Duffinator 10-10-2009, 02:41 PM Guys, this thread is a discussion of 21st Century Breakdown, not if you like GD or not. Please keep it on track. Thanks.
