View Full Version : Sign-up sheet for the Shun Mook discs
Kamakiri 10-19-2002, 10:21 PM Okay, everyone that would like to demo the Shun Mook Mpingo discs, please post in here, and only post if you want to give them a trial run. You can keep them for one week, and agree to send them along to the next person via USPS priority mail after that week (about $3.50). If you are not in the US, I'll ship them to you if you ship them to another board member in your area, or ship them back to me. Shipping Canadian should be easy too. I'd like to get everyone here a shot that wants to try.
The list so far:
Myself
MikE
gonefishin
Tonto Yoder
grumpy
I'll be doing this by geographical location too, to keep transit time and shipping costs down. I'll leave this thread open for a couple of days to get everyone in here.....for this first AudioKarma demo, I'd like to open it only to people who registered on AK either today or before.
If you have any products personally you'd like to pass along for review, please send send me a PM and we'll get in the rounds. Hopefully this will be a type of program that we can keep going as long as we have products to review that we can get :)
Again, please ONLY POST if you'd like to be on the list for the trial, and you must post your reviews and thoughts appropriately (need not be scientific, but if it can be, all the better!)
sasaki kojiro 10-19-2002, 10:44 PM I'm signing in...
I was just reading that review by Dudley this morning.
Thatch_Ear 10-19-2002, 11:05 PM I want to try them and I wasn't joking about the hockey pucks either.
DaveM 10-20-2002, 03:07 AM You can send them this way. I've got a little scientific experiment planned for them there hockey pucks.
Dave
JoZmo 10-20-2002, 07:44 AM Tim,
I'll give them a try. I'm real sceptical of some of this audio voodoo, but I'll try to keep an open mind.
My wife wants to know if they come in colors!
Kamakiri 10-20-2002, 10:18 AM Make sure also that your state is in your signature, or in your post, so that I can try to set up the logistics of the test.
We'll leave this as open sign-up until Wednesday, I'll have the discs by then.
Thatch_Ear 10-20-2002, 02:41 PM DaveM,
I was refering to having a trio of hockey pucks travell with the ebony discs. Hockey pucks are not readily available in Texas so I was hoping Kam might pick some up. I would like to try the pucks in the same manner as the Shun Mooks.
Kamakiri 10-20-2002, 04:43 PM Well, I mean, we could do something like hockey pucks or something, but the main purpose of the tests is to see if they work at all, not which works best. If you establish that there is a gain to be had by damping resonances in this fashion, then at that point you can figure out the best (and cheapest) way to do so.
Kamakiri 10-23-2002, 06:06 PM Just walked in the door to find a box, Priority Mail, from Venus Hi-Fi :)
I haven't tried them yet, so I can't give an opinion. I'll be playing with them this weekend and bringing them to ProAc's on Sunday when we go up for a visit so he can give his thoughts too.
To give things a geographic perspective, the closest to me is MikE, so I'll be sending them his way on Sunday or Monday. From there, it's to gonefishin, grumpy, Tonto, Jozmo, DaveM, Thatch, and sasaki kojiro, then back home again. If anyone else wants to try, I'll send them along after this list is done.
First impression: these things do not work by weight, as they are very light.....but I'll still grab some hockey pucks and send them to you if you want Thatch
PM me your address MikE, you're in the on-deck circle!
Kamakiri 10-23-2002, 11:05 PM LOL! :D
Looking forward to it. Is there literature provided? MikE
Kamakiri 11-07-2002, 07:20 AM Get em yet MikE? :)
gonefishin 11-22-2002, 12:04 PM I just got'em in the mail from MikE...I'll probably have them a little while...who are they going to next?
Kamakiri 11-22-2002, 08:16 PM Make sure you post your thoughts and a review!
Haven't seen one in a while, I know MikE is sandbagging until the others are done.
Kamakiri 11-22-2002, 09:53 PM Well, we do have about another month of reviewing to go before they return home. However you individually choose to handle it is fine with me. I would ask that everyone make individual notes if they don't want to post now.
I believe there are six of us doing the evaluation of the pucks. Whenever Grumpy completes his audition I'll post my comments.
MikE
gonefishin 11-25-2002, 12:00 PM tonto...can ya send me yer address via e-mail?
thanks
Thatch_Ear 11-27-2002, 09:19 PM Please guys, last to recieve is first to post. I think it is only fair for those who have yet to recieve not to get preconcieved notions. Where are those dang things anyway?
sasaki kojiro 11-30-2002, 02:07 PM I think I get them last. What is the ETA? How long do I audition before having to post a review?
JoZmo 11-30-2002, 02:33 PM Here's Kam's response to an email I sent him about the order.
Re: Shun Mooks
I'm pretty sure the list went like this:
Me and ProAc
MikE
gonefishin
grumpy
Tonto Yoder
then you (JoZmo)
Thatch_Ear
DaveM
and Sasaki Kojiro
Things have gone slower than I have expected thus far, and GF has the discs now. Next week they'll be in grump's hands, so figure you're another 3 weeks out.
ckelly 12-23-2002, 07:52 AM Who's got thje mpingo discs?
I want to hear the reviews....:dammit:
gonefishin 12-23-2002, 10:30 AM I'll be sending'em to grump after Christmas...I'll have my review up after everyone is done playin' with'em

Whoa. That'll be in about three months.
Thatch_Ear 12-26-2002, 01:27 PM Well everyone was supposed to have no more than a week with them but I think the holidays kind of threw the schedule off. Hopefully things will speed back up here pretty quick.
gonefishin 12-28-2002, 01:42 PM yea, I was the cause of the big hold up...sorry guys!
the disks have been shipped to grumpy.
thanks for your patience :(
Tonto Yoder 12-28-2002, 03:21 PM You can take me out of the line-up, so Jozmo's after grumpy.
grumpy 01-02-2003, 10:09 AM OK
For some strange reason I have ended up with both the Shun's and the Darumas at the same time. I am done with both of them and will be forwarding them both as of today. I am going to alter the order of the Shun Mook discs a bit otherwise Jozmo would end up with both of them also. I will be sending Jozmo the Darumas and Thatch the Shun's once Thatch is done with them he can then send then to Jozmo. This will avoid both pieces being hung up again.
Grumpy
JoZmo 01-20-2003, 09:14 AM I'm ready to move these on. Who gets them next? PM me with your address.
I should be able to get them off near the end of the week.
Kamakiri 02-11-2003, 07:16 AM Who's got these things right now? :dunno:
JoZmo 02-11-2003, 03:27 PM Thatch has them.
Thatch_Ear 02-12-2003, 12:49 AM Ready to send them too. Who gets them next? Email me with an address please.
ckelly 02-13-2003, 11:16 AM SO.... any opinions?
:dammit:
I want to hear opinions on these things
Chris
JoZmo 02-13-2003, 02:42 PM CK
I think the plan was to wait until all participants have evaluated them before we give opinions, and I think there's a few people left.
BrianB 02-15-2003, 02:29 AM I recall that a couple of very positive AudioKarma member reviews appeared early on, but were then removed so as to give everyone a chance to audition the Mpingo Discs for themselves without being swayed by the opinions of other AKers.
By the way, did anyone bother to save those early reviews? It would be a shame if they had simply been deleted...
Thatch_Ear 02-18-2003, 12:43 PM I thought SK was next but it is Dave M who I think lives in CA. You Hawaii guys will have to wait just a bit longer.
I did post on the thread that had the first reviews that I was going to delete the thread days before I did so, so hopefully everyone who had posted kept their notes on their impressions.
sasaki kojiro 02-23-2003, 08:17 PM You can scratch me from the list. Lets see some reviews already.
This process has taken so long that it's almost irrelevant anyway.
grumpy 02-23-2003, 08:53 PM sasaki kojiro
Lets see there were roughly 8 or 9 people who wanted to try the Mpingo's. Each review has taken a few day each plus the shipping time to the next person. That makes close to 8 weeks of testing. If you know of another quicker way of testing them I am all ears. If its irrelevant anyway then why would you want to see the reviews ?
Grumpy
I agree the process has taken alot longer than I thought, but what was I thinking? Knowing what I discovered I'm really looking forward to everyone else's report. I would encourage everyone who signed up to follow through with the audition.
MikE
grumpy 02-23-2003, 09:44 PM I agree also. It has taken a long time for this whole process. I would suggest if we do another review that we limit the amount of folks just for the sake of time. We could take the first four folks and let them review and post. Then the next set. I know I know It can bias the next set of reviewers but does any one else have any ideas.
Grumpy
JoZmo 02-24-2003, 06:49 AM These things just take time. I know I had these things for a week...
Received them, it took a day until I could sit down and try them for a short evaluation and then tried again the next day for a short while.
Then they sat in my house until I could get to the Post Office to mail them (having to work and all) and by then it was the weekend. So there's a week not including the time it took to get to the next person....
I don't see any better way other than to cut down on the number of people doing the evaluations like Grumpy said.
sasaki kojiro 03-30-2003, 11:05 PM
Kamakiri 03-31-2003, 07:12 AM They're back home with me at the moment. We'll either do another go-around, or I'll just sell them and move on to another product.....headphones
sasaki kojiro 03-31-2003, 10:13 AM I meant reviews. Were not there supposed to be reviews?
Thatch_Ear 03-31-2003, 04:31 PM Tim,
How did you get them back? I thought that they were going to Hawaii after Dave M tried them. If they are done making the rounds then who ever got them 1st aught to post a review and we can all post our impressions on the thread they start. Was it you Tim?
Kamakiri 03-31-2003, 04:39 PM I posted my impression of them in a thread a while ago when ProAc and I got together at his place. I think MikE was next after me...
Thatch_Ear 03-31-2003, 04:50 PM There were a couple of reviews on a thread that I deleted so as to not have future recipients biased. Could you post again starting a new thread?
:D
grumpy 03-31-2003, 05:35 PM I could swear I posted my review of them ! I will start a new thread then..
Yes, I remember reading those "reviews" and yes, they were deleted after we decided that it would be best to not post judgement until everyone had they're chance with them. That was many months ago. I never posted my thoughts as I was waiting on the group to conclude with them but I'm unsure if and when that actually took place. I think someone should begin a thread on what they observed...
MikE
Thatch_Ear 03-31-2003, 07:16 PM Proac Mike,
How about you start this off? :D
sasaki kojiro 04-06-2003, 10:51 PM Hey man, where's the reviews?!?
Us last-in-line members in the outer regions want to know...
Kamakiri 02-08-2004, 10:08 AM Reviews long done and gone, these discs are now for sale. Price $75.00 for all three, still in mint condition. Please PM me for details.
BrianB 02-08-2004, 10:16 AM Hey Kam, I'll send you $75 to keep the Shun Mooks available for other AKers to audition - last I knew, there were still at least a couple of folks who wanted to try them out, but had no idea who to contact to get them. What do you say? :D
gonefishin 02-08-2004, 10:33 AM A review with no reviews...huh.
Do you still have the links, to the various spoiler hacks? They're really easy to add...and may make more sense than either having the reviews "in plain site" or...to have no reviews at all, in the review thread.
There are a couple varying styles of hacks (I think there were links to three or four varying styles)...personally...I thought the easiest one seemed the most stable...but the others wouldn't be bad to work with either.
This way...you can keep people from reading the review...yet, your still able to put a review up in the review thread. :dunno:
again...just something to think about...
grumpy 02-08-2004, 10:50 AM I never could understand keeping potential reviewers from reading reviews. I guess I have a little more faith in people not to be swayed by what others have to say.
Possibly I could organize another go around of the Mooks and Darumas but if I do it you Have to post your review within a set time frame or no more reviewing for you. Harsh ? maybe but I don't think everyone who tried out the products last time posted their review and its not fair to Brian an Omer who have been kind enough to offer these products up to us.
Grumpy

Not necessary. I didn't know there was still possible interest. In that case, let's organize another go-round!
I agree with Grump, I don't think anyone else's opinion sways anyone in this fashion.

Actually, most of the original reviews are still archived. To read them, click here (http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5994&perpage=15&highlight=mpingo&pagenumber=1).
