I got the Threshold in last week - I let it warm up and played a few tracks. Very neutral (as far as I can tell) without any prominent frequency being overhyped. Bass and dynamics are amazing with a nice smooth but detailed top-end. The unit never shouts 'look at me', much like the rest of my Threshold chain.

In comparison, the Bottlehead Seduction is more forward and maybe a touch more grainy. Of course that could be my imagination or the geekitude of owning a new piece of equipment.

The best part is the adjustable DIP switches that allows different resistance and capacitance loading. Gain is also adjustable for MM or MC carts. A nice bit of 80s technology here.

I'll take some inside pics someday soon - the PCB has gold plated traces!

Gold plated traces, what is the advantage of that when gold is not as good a conductor as copper or silver? Looking forward to seeing the guts.

grainy tube sound compared to a sand unit. Interesting comment.

who knows... it is actually a copper trace, but gold is laid on top of the trace. No degradation from oxidation? It certainly looks cool. :D Perreaux did the same thing on some of their 80s units too.

here is a pic of the insides of my FET-10/HL linestage to give you an idea

Nice!! I like the looks (and sound) of Threshold gear, especially the stuff designed by Nelson Pass.

Very nice gear! If it sounds half as good as it's built, you've got yourself some world class gear there! Enjoy! :music:

That's a very tidy piece of circuit design. Looks like an SM2 or 3.

dividebytube you won't be dissapointed by the Fet 10 P/C after extended listening. I'm sold on "vintage" Threshold gear having two SL10 and a Fet 9 preamps. The SL10 was updated with all new caps by Jon Soderberg and the results were everything other owners have raved about. Clean, detailed, powerful, neutral are just a few of the positives I can think of off hand. The Fet9 is next in line to be sent to Jon for new caps etc and I'm sure the performance will be better than when it was new. I have two Threshold amps, a SA3 which was upgraded by Jon Soderberg and a S500 Series II, both are outstanding.

I have a Threshold FET 10 phono unit. I was thinking of having the unit checked/cleaned/etc. Does anyone knows where I can send this unit for "maintenance"?

nicoff I would highly recommend you send your Fet10 phono to Jon Soderberg of Vintage Amp Repair in Citris Heights CA. Jon formerly worked for the "original" Threshold Corp. with Nelson Pass and has an excellent reputation for restoreing/serviceing vintage Threshold equipment. This is too nice of audio equipment to risk being serviced by somone who is not familiar with it. You should be able to Google up his website and contact info, if not contact me for info.

Lovely. Ever since I got my Threshold S/300 poweramp I'm more or less hooked on those Nelson Paas designs. It always strikes me as funny that brands like Krell and Mark Levinson get all the fame, while Threshold is at least as good (IMHO of course).
Anyway, nice piece of gear, enjoy!

Not true from my POV. It was always Threshold and Levinson. Krell came into the picture later on.

+1, Jon does fantastic work! Hes a real straight shooter and can get your equipment sounding better than original, if so desired.
