A guy nearby is selling a Dual 1019 for $35. Says it's been well-maintained and is working. I'm planning to use it exclusively for 78s and hope it will be an upgrade over my Garrard SL95B. (I hope it comes with some sort of cool old cart!)

I'm picking it up tonight.

The cart holder (under the headshell) is worth more than that....not to mention whatever period cart is under that tonerarm...perhaps a Shure V-15-II???

Pick it up now as I would jump on that thing in a heartbeat as it even has the dust cover. Be sure to track down another cart-holder (they do pop up on ebay) as you will want to use it for Lp's as well...they are very fun tables to use.

Read some servicing threads on how to oil and clean these tables as there are many here on AK. Just like when you buy a used car, even if the seller says everything is up to snuff, you still change the oil first thing.

Thanks! I'm going over after work tonight, the guy is holding it for me.

A Shure V-15-II would be sweet! Or even a nice old Stanton or Pickering would be cool.

I have no concerns about cleaning and re-lubing, I've done that before on a free BIC 980 I recently got on CL, it's easy to do.

The 1019 will spank your BIC for pacing, dynamics, and build quality....enjoy!

The plinth and dustvover look in good shape, and it looks like you've got both spindles and a 45 adapter. So report back when you get to look it over better and try it out. It sure looks like it could be a very lucky find!

The 980 isn't even hooked up right now. It was free (and a guinea pig for me to learn how to work on TT's), and someday I'll use it in the office or kitchen or someplace.

I'm curious to see how well the 1019 performs vs. my SL-1200!

Well, that turned out to be a bust.

The unit was in nice cosmetic shape (albeit rather dusty). The owner hadn't used it in 20 years and the platter had a lot of trouble spinning. Undoubtedly the lube had dried up. The cueing damper was completely non-functional too. The off/on switches were acting funky too. I didn't bother checking the idler wheel's condition.

I don't need any more projects, and $35 was more than I was willing to spend on a fixer-upper.

Oh, and the non-labeled cart was nothing I could identify. Probably something cheap from the '70s.

If anyone in the Boston area is interested in getting it, do a search for "vintage Dual" on Craig's List.

That the old lubricant would have become sticky and that some of the controls wouldn't work right and that the platter wouldn't move at full speed, ACTUALLY are to be expected if the unit hadn't been throughly serviced (not just taken care of).

Had it actually worked perfectly it would have been nothing short of a miracle, but hope springs eternal. I paid a lot more for a 1229 that needed as much work as that one probably needs, in fact the shipping was a lot more than you paid!

That the platter will spin, means that the motor and idler wheel are working, even if they are fighting resistance. Don't force any of the levers, if you want to pass it on to another Dual enthusiast...something might break. There is nothing you said about it that doesn't indicate that the machine can't be brought back to near 100% with some cleaning and lubrication of the linkage and probably the motor. Of course other problems might arise, and a person might want to upgrade the cartridge.

Too, bad I'm broke and 900 miles from Boston, or I might want to come take a look at it. Good luck. I hope the machine finds a good home.
