View Full Version : Shure V15III differences

Someone asked in another thread that I seem to remember (never can tell these days) which to keep of the two Shure V15III cartridges he had... the one with the white paint or the one with the yellow. All I remember in answers was that they are functionally equivalent... take your pick! Well, I have come to own three, two with yellow paint and one with white. All have printed Sure and V15 Type III on them. That's all. The stylus shank out of the yellow painted ones is WAY too small to fit into the white one. Is this by design, or is there a chance someone ripped the guts out of the white one? The opening definitely looks larger on the white one. Can anyone explain what I have here? Thanks.

All I see on the white one is "Shure." Where on it does it say V15 Type III?

I'd say either the white one has had the guts removed or it isn't a V15, but rather an M cart that was designed to look like it--but I'm a loss at what it would be. I know the Type IV and M97 were designed to look alike. I'm not aware of any IIIs that used the large shank.

I have both yellow and white, L-M [low-mass], and UA [United Audio]models.

"No difference." [Say it with a French accent, just like in the old Blue Bonnet margarine commercials of 40 years ago.]

The one in your picture is missing a copper piece that exerts pressure to the end of the brass stylus tube.
Also, if it slides in waaay too easily, the pole pieces were possibly forced apart a bit by the installation of the wrong or a fake stylus.

Howard if you look at the cartridge in the top picture on the opposite side you can see printed V15III.

Yup, there's something missing inside the top cartridge :(

Well, for heaven's sake. You can see that the insides have been pulled back out of the housing on the white one. :D :sigh:

You can? Not familiar with the "insides" enough to know that they should look the same, however, now that I look closer I can see a tunnel through the white one... yup... open front to back, not so with the yellow ones, but still, I wouldn't know if the contact was to be made on the sides inside the hollow tube. So do we think the guts are stripped from this one? Is that a so-so common occurrence? If so.... DAMN! Thanks guys.

Funny thing is I think this came on an old, non-working, beat up, Dual of a not so popular style that I picked up some time ago just for the headshell and cartridge! :pity: Oh well. Bright side is.... I got a damn good headshell and motor! :smilemad:

I had a stanton that the outer "shell" was loose over the inside works. It looks like you need to push the pins and plastic back inside its shell. Looks to be out by a 1/4 inch or so. Notice how on the yellow one the pins start at the back edge of the metal shell. The yellow one is way back. I bet it is fine. John

Well I'll be not so horn swaggled feeling anymore!!!! Sloober, you nailed it! Never seeing the white one close up before, I though it odd the part the pins attached to stuck out so far compared to the yellow ones, but figured it was an old design. You were right. Pushed it back in and felt a little bit of a snap. Shank slides in there snugly now. Gee, and guess what.... no more light at the end of the hollow tube! Duh...

Bingo! I didn't see it at first, but after reading the other comments, a light went off. Enjoy... I'm Shure you will!

The glue hat holds the guts in the housing gets brittle with age, and just pushing in the stylus, can push the guts out. A drop of superglue on the non-grounded face (make sure the ground tab is between the guts and the housing, and not outside) will hold it in forever. Or thereabouts.

Thanks Perry. Will do.
