View Full Version : Tube Amp
fdwaller 05-09-2009, 08:26 PM Hello All,
Looking at a few tube amps. If anyone knows anything about these, please let me know. The magnavox and Dewald are the only used ones, an the one Dynaco ST-70 kit is without tubes.
Paxthon 2x40 watts, EL-34B, a/b Class $500
Dynaco Series-2 Panor ST-70, EL-34 $500
Magnavox with 6V6 tubes $200
Dewald P1400 Integrated, 2x15 watts, EL-84 $300
Musical Paradise MP-401 Class-A Triode Single Ended, EL-156
2x15 watts, $525
Nuera 3403PP-A Integrated, Class A/B Push Pull, 2x35 watts
EL-34 $725
Dynaco ST-70 Kit Triode/Pentode Mode 2x35 watts $650
Would Class-A or Push-Pull type tube amp be better? I would also like 30-40 watts per channel. $500 + was a little more than I wanted to spend, but these are new units. Anyone have a really nice looking/sounding tube amp/integrated amp/receiver for sale, in the $200-400 range?
ashok 05-09-2009, 09:53 PM Hi Frank,
If you need 30-40W per channel, then I think you are going to need the EL34 or possibly KT77 or KT88 tubes.
But if it is the Pinnacles you are going to be driving, then the EL84 or 6V6 or even lower power tubes should work well.
I have heard Squidward's ST70 and I think it is a very good amp. Not heard any of the others, so I am afraid not much in terms of advice.
However, the Maggie has a very strong following. So, if you are OK with the lower power, then that should be a good one too.
Did you see the new Jolida FX-10 at the AK Fest? It uses EL84s, and I think around 10W per channel, so way below your power requirement. But it is an integrated, and comes with a remote control. At your budget too.
I hope this helps.
fdwaller 05-09-2009, 11:33 PM Have any info on the Jolida? Price, where I can find it? Are there any stereo shops you know of that has used equipment they sell?
jmathers 05-10-2009, 09:04 AM Several of our SMAC members (Kegger, Squidward, etc) build and modify tube amps. Talk to them before you do anything drastic. Pm them by username here at AK.
Jeff
Andyman 05-10-2009, 09:35 AM Yep, good advice.
I know Kegger could help you out.
I have the Paxthon VTA-80 and after re-tubing it I am quite pleased with it.
The stock Chinese tubes made for an insipid sounding amp.
Lou
thx1138 06-18-2009, 06:50 AM A Magnavox for 200 dollars? Must be nice. I'd go with the triode/pentode ST70 over the Panor - I had a triode/pentode modded ST70 that I regret selling badly.
Not fond of the build quality on the Jolida, or past Jolidas.
For under 400 dollars - your in some rough territory - alot of hit and miss. I got lucky and picked up a Fisher X202B - best 7591 amp I've heard, for 375 rebuilt on epray, but that was after so much trial and error (and money).
Strawman 06-19-2009, 08:22 AM I'm waiting patiently for my newman/squidded maggie 6V6...
dgwojo 06-19-2009, 11:56 PM I had the Ideal Innovations Elite 80+ tube amps at the fest, I think they're a steal at around $500 via that auction site, brand new, from Syd in Canada.
A super nice Wigwam photo from the fest;

djnagle 06-20-2009, 02:11 PM If you really want to jump in with both feet, pick up a Magnivox (sp) off CL and rip the amp out and rebuild it yourself. There are many here that would help with advice and shit. Cheers.

Yep, I just saw that on their site as well. I heard them at the Fest and even at 8 bills, they are a good deal.

Hmmm, I just checked that auction site, $499 (item#220433772428), in fact, only $460 with MSN cash from Bing, I added my own oak front on one of them from a piece of oak from Home Depot.
Ideal's Storefront (http://stores.shop.ebay.com/IDEAL-INNOVATIONS-VACUUM-TUBE-AUDIO)
The new ones come with larger transformers than mine, Hammond is doing the iron now. Dave.
dgwojo 06-21-2009, 10:46 AM I just noticed, the $499 price is not a buy-it-now so MSN cash is not available. :tears:
