View Full Version : Heres a hard one.....Best Led Zeppelin Album and why?
daza152 05-17-2009, 02:34 AM WE all have favourites that is if we are Led Zep fans, and there is plenty of us out there. So What DO you consider to be the Best/favourite album and why?
Mine is probably Led Zep II followed closely by House of the holy
My reasons are this, What an awesome song 'Whole Lotta Love' WOW!
and I love ramble on. With Houses... I love the acoustic track 'Over the hills and far away' A Classic:yes:
So I'd like to here your views on this subject,
Thanks Daza:music:
Physical Graffitti!
Down by the Seaside is a great song and I really feel that by this album they were as close and tight as they would ever be, and had the experience, knowledge and bravado to back it up. They experiment a little more but it's worth it.
Other than that, Zep III is highly underrated. One of JPJ's best works.

Physical for sure. Though most of the songs had already been recorded at other times and they decided to get it out there due to continuous problems the band was dealing with. It is the high water mark as far as great songs. Because the songs on Physical don't lend themselves to radio play, the herd can't hum along so it's far less popular.
Led Zeppelin was a live band and all their studio albums suffer due to the restraints of the studio process. I like the old bootleg stuff that "How the West was Won" reminds me of. The 30 minute version of No Quarter on For Badge Holders Only, is more my style.
IMO, Led Zeppelin evolved into a band called TOOL.

Tower Boss 05-17-2009, 07:31 AM Hello Folks,
For me it is Houses of the Holy for the diverse styles in the album compositions. It has some of my favorite tracks plus this is the only album that has the lyrics printed for each song. Moreover, this albums tour produced The Song Remains the Same video!
My favorite song from album has to be Over the Hills and Far Away (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0nrOL_-U1zI), as I love the 6/12 string acoustic opening that builds to electric entry and carries throughout the song. I have to spend a lot of time on the road and this song reminds me how lucky I am for my wife. Next up is The Ocean (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IbSugn0dB4c), which reminds me of my childhood as I lived in Santa Cruz, California and on Whidbey Island here in Washington State followed by The Rain Song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HpLe-qUUGIE), reference growing up on Whidbey Island!
Other greats from the album are The Song Remains the Same (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CcYZlRWWxO0) • D'yer Mak'er (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4g1WHqQKEfc) • Dancing Days (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHM40KrbA_k) • No Quarter (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FgHSk91RhL8)
This album is closely followed by IV, II and Physical Graffiti with Kashmir (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=73dvrir5kig) being my all time favorite song of the band.

TB
spideyjack 05-17-2009, 07:49 AM i like em all pretty much equally up to and including physical graffitti, but i have to be in the right mood.
caddisgeek 05-17-2009, 08:38 AM II
Most consistent effort IMHO
plus it's got my fave Led Zep trac, Livin' Lovin' Maid
getright99 05-17-2009, 08:55 AM mine are 'physical graffitti' and 'IV', but they're all great.
Heres a hard one.....Best Led Zeppelin Album and why?
That's easy,
The first.
Why?
cause I said so. :smoke:
bigmacc 05-17-2009, 09:22 AM Interesting question, the answer to depends on personal opinion and experience with this band.
For example in my case my favourite Zep lp's are One, two and four. Please note l enjoy all of them (the exception being the first live one it is ok but l didn't like the recording).
Reasons why well l saw Zep the three times they performed in Toronto. The first time was a place called the Rock Pile the group had just released their first lp.
Second time was Massey Hall which was number two lp. The last time was at Maple Leaf Gardens. By this time Zep was a super group and they were promoting the soon to be released fourth lp. Imagine hearing Stairway to Heaven approximately one week before it's lp release.
Now l haven't mentioned the recording, the different in the song structure etc, etc. To me the enjoyment of the lp are directly related to the experience of seeing this group live.
Tiver 05-17-2009, 09:55 AM Physical Graffiti:
Partly because it was the first one I owned, but mostly because of the range of music allowed by the double album.
This will be my fav for this thread at least. The next one up on the platter will be the fav for that moment. :)
charles64 05-17-2009, 11:23 AM They have such a great library of songs it's hard to choose just one album, but the one I play the most often is "Houses of the Holy"- "No Quarter" is one of my favorite LOUD songs....
MOPAR3 05-17-2009, 11:59 AM Presence this album just rocks from start to finish very heavy.
BobHicks 05-17-2009, 12:16 PM For me the first followed closely by the second. The first album was released in Toronto on a Wednesday. The guitar player from our high school band drove all the way there to get it and we then learned Comunications Breakdown and played it at a battle of the bands on the Sunday. Only a few guys from a couple of the other bands even knew what it was and they loved it . Ahh memories. The second album was just one great song. There wasn't a second of it I didn't like.:D I think your personal favs have a lot to do with the good times you associate with them.
Hayes 05-17-2009, 12:21 PM The first one of course. Why? Because I'm listening to it at the moment.
superdog 05-17-2009, 01:38 PM Don't know if it is the best but my personal fav is IV.
AnalogDigit 05-17-2009, 03:12 PM My favorite is Physical Graffiti. One of my favorite songs from that album is The Rover. It is a great song with some really great guitar riffs at the end. It is one song that album rock stations don't even play.
I like Led Zeppelin II also, but Whole Lotta Love and Livin' Lovin' Maid/Just a Woman
are played way too many times on oldies stations and album rock stations.
klama2006 05-17-2009, 03:29 PM IV, is my favorite.
Jailtime 05-17-2009, 04:08 PM Physical Graffiti is my vote. Led Zep really shows off their versatility on this album. Kashmir and Down by the Seaside are category defying, I've never heard anything quite like those songs. Jimmy Page is outstanding throughout the album, especially on Bron Yr Aur. John Bonham is excellent as well, the Rover is one of my favorite drumming pieces. But IV comes in a close second, once again due to variety of songs. When the Levee Breaks is another one that sounds like nothing else out there. Mind blowing drumming by Bonham on that track too. :music: And it's got Stairway, the best song in rock.

:thmbsp: +1 Houses of the Holy
IMHO, they had already well established a place at the top of the hill for rock by the time this came out. But, with this album it became unmistakable that LZ was a band that could go anywhere and do anything, encompassing whatever style they wanted to... and most importantly, NOT in a cheesy way (like some other bands of the time)... but in a powerfully artistic way... that still rocked like a mutha. Whatever one thinks of JP's "sloppy" guitar technique (not my opinion); his genius musical mind can't be denied... me thinks.
ablethevoice 05-17-2009, 05:40 PM Its almost impossible to nail a single "best" Zep album. Even if I were pressed hard the best I could say is a toss up between "Houses" and "Physical". They just seemed to be at their artistic and musical peak. Just as a new TV series feels a little wobbly for a season or two till the cast gets comfortable with the roles and the premise, a band can also take time to properly "season" and Zep had hit optimum ripeness with those two releases.
Paul Loflin 05-22-2009, 04:25 AM Ditto on the quality of the entire catalog, LZ II is a consistent favorite followed by PG.
KeninDC 05-22-2009, 09:19 AM II is stunning, but PG may be "Best."
JimJ[VT] 05-22-2009, 10:06 AM 4...:)
similost 05-22-2009, 10:12 AM Can I just pick a box set since it's got all the greatest in it? :D
zenith2134 05-22-2009, 12:43 PM Zeppelin II wins for me. I love that album.
Art K. 05-22-2009, 01:04 PM PG and IV. Both great albums...it goes downhill from there for me, though I like all but Coda.
Twenty20Man 05-22-2009, 01:29 PM the first one, followed by trhe second..hey i'm sensing a pattern here
Drybasement 05-22-2009, 01:30 PM My problem with Zeppelin is that my favorite songs are spread out over several albums. Babe I'm Gonna Leave You (1st album), No Quarter (Houses Of The Holy), The Rover (Physical Graffiti), Achilles Last Stand (Presence), Immigrant Song (3rd album); so choosing a favorite album is difficult for me. But one does stand out more than the others and that's Physical Graffiti
.
I saw Plant/Page perform in 1994 and that concert reinforced the fact that Kashmir is one kick arse song. Throw in Trampled Under Foot and perhaps the best Led Zeppelin song ever recorded in The Rover and you've got a very good album there.
cfranz 05-22-2009, 01:35 PM Houses of the Holy...
'Physical Grafitti' is for those too young to remember real music. :D
zenith2134 05-22-2009, 02:01 PM Houses of the Holy is a pretty incredible album, don't get me wrong. I like II though since it still retains most of their original sound, if you ask me.
gklainer 05-23-2009, 01:36 AM PG is miy favorite. Others have mentioned great tracks like Kashmir, Down by the Seaside and Rover but I really enjoy In My Time of Dying and In The Light as well.
I noticed no one has voted for III or In Through the Out Door. They might get some votes if we are talking about coolest album jackets.
Gary
stereofanboy 05-23-2009, 02:07 AM IV is best. Every song is good, and Stairway To Heaven is transcendent. I think this album would get more votes if Stairway hadn't been so popular with the rabble. That fact almost takes it "out of category" for sophisticates like us.
I do, of course, love every Zeppelin album. I especially like Fool in the Rain, Kasmir, The Ocean and every other song with that patented John Bonham drum pattern.
