+1 for the above comment.

Okay... now... what the heck is going on here? Do these guys know something we don't know. Is Technics going to drop the their turntable line or something!?!

They've got the mk2 (http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?jspStoreDir=hdus&catalogId=10053&productId=100616524&navFlow=3&keyword=sl-1200mk2&langId=-1&searchRedirect=sl-1200mk2&storeId=10051&endecaDataBean=com.homedepot.sa.el.wc.catalog.bean s.EndecaDataBean%403c56957e&ddkey=Search) as well... but for 549.95!?!?! They're nailing the prices down as we speak. Planning on flooring the competition with a service like you never saw- a true cut above and promises not to screw you. They're gonna hammer other stores dropping this news on us like a brick.

Don't take too long to lumber over there for this hi-fi staple. It'll truly frame out your system laying a strong foundation of fidelity, opening some great doors and leaving a window open for improvements.

Funny the picture being painted by stores selling the 1200, eh? People must be board of iPods and probably pine for the good old days.

Must be a splinter group in the HD marketing department. I'll bet they're closet (kit form) audiophiles......

Makes sense to me. Anytime I go there it's crawling with boomers. Now if they also sold the new Ford Mustang and a hip replacement department, it would be one stop shopping

Another jackass move by some corporate douchebag whose toadie underlings won't tell him he's an idiot.

Almost as good as Kroger selling televisions here...

Reminds me of when KMart went out and started acquiring ancillary businesses like PACE, Builders Square, Office Max, etc.

That worked out well for all involved...

If you do not own stock in Home Depot, what is your concern? Do you own a Technics turntable and are worried your friends will kid you about the Scott's fertilizer dust on the unit? If they are too high priced and the service is terrible, the whole venture will go nowhere.

I think it's great news.

Despite the 'vinyl resurgence', there's very few retail outlets that sell turntables in this area. The local Radio Shack sells an Ion model which is a total POS. Retailers in Billings are not much better, offering similar crappy "USB turntables" designed for converting vinyl to poor quality MP3 files.

Nice to see Home Depot get in the game with quality merchandise.

***The post by thedelihaus was brilliant.

Yeah. It may be insane that you can find a high end TT in a store that sells patio furniture but at least it may get people to get into vinyl again. If my local HD sells one cheap I may grab one and bring my 2- milk crates full of albums back to life. F*cked up it may be :D

Is anyone sure they are selling them at the stores? It's probably available online only. They don't have to have any inventory, just a link to a supplier or other retailer.

Probably true. Might be time for this "Boomer" to buy a 1200 before they are put to rest. I can always tell my son I am running to Home Depot to get him something. Then pick one up for myself as well along with a hip replacement and the tools that made the home we live in!

The 1200 can do alot of things. Its cool if Home Depot has finally come up with a machine that will spin your vinyl while building you that new rec room that you've always wanted.

I doubt there are many HD buyers looking for turntable especially one for over $500. Who's going to sell them for HD? Not putting down the HD staff, what do they know about audio? My two cents..

Home Depot knows as much about audio as Best Buy does.

It could work out great. It’s a wild card. If Home Depot puts them in the brick & mortars then there is more public exposure to records. Some will remember and to others it will be new and unique, especially if there is one on display. Perhaps Best Buy won’t let HD trump them so they will sell the same for cheaper or a better model. Competition in a recession, good idea. They might even advertise it. If it doesn’t work out then they’ll clear out at half price.

Home Depot, where’s the software?

Mark W.
05-19-2009, 10:21 PM
The thing is being sold on line the staff of Home depot is not going to have a thing to do with them. But hey from what I have experianced with rare exceptions the guy from plumbing could know more about Audio then the salesman at the local Stereo Botique.

Does the staff of Amazon.com know squat about anything they sell on line?

Technics is a dead brand aside from the turntables. I don't think Panasonic has any plans to do away with it.

As an amusing aside, I almost wrote "Matsushita". That wouldn't be correct anymore, since the company formally changed its name to Panasonic last year due to being blocked by too many internet filters.

This is just a mess!!! A home improvement center that sell TT's. I don't understand what is going on. It just pisses me off. I 'll go tomorrow to my local depot and see if anybody there knows how to set up the cart. properly and if they don't I will throw a fit to the manager, maybe that way I'll feel better. This big companies don't know anymore what to do to get our dollars. It's disgusting, why they don't just stick with their own crap. I am wondering if tampons start selling more for some reason are they going to sell those too???
I hope that nobody and I say nobody goes and buys one of those TT's over there. Man I am fuming!!!!!:thumbsdn::nono:

Sure, why not? Then the guy in hardware can sell you a 1 lb box of 4 penny finish nails for a stylus and you will have a life time supply.

I am more concerned as to how and/or why Panasonic would prostitute themselves in this manner. Is the economy really that bad off?

My opinion, as the last of the cowboys (general contractor/remodeling), the dolts at HD make the dolts at Suckerlands look good. I've had better luck at Loweballs.

I suppose that if times get hard enough, I'll go down there on my knees and try to sign on as one of their "preferred contractors", or what ever the hell they call them.

I have started to raise my prices to reflect theirs.

For what it's worth, I've been called to several jobs to fix what their "preferred contractors" have screwed up. And it has never worked to my benefit. Pardon me, but I'm pretty much down to telling people, "You hired them dumb sonofoabitches to put it in, get them dumb sonofoabitches to come fix it".

You can do better. Great place to buy tools, or what ever they have in stock. But the little guy has a reputation, he lives or dies by it. Those bastards are on the big board.

Hang on, they'll be selling you prefabs form China, installed by their illegal work force, but it's 10% cheaper than hiring qualified people with a reputation. As far as that goes, it may be 20% higher, but how will you know unless you do your shopping right.

I will admit, I do have a dog in this fight,
Chas

Do you have concrete evidence of this? Are you on the board or do you belong to a splinter group? Is there a sliver of hope here or do we all bolt to HD?

It bothers me because it seems to be another stupid business decision that someone needs to call them on.
Not that our economy isn't tough as nails and recent excellent decisions in the auto, finance, banking, credit card and other industries have them in a place of envy

You know what I think. We are going to see a Home Depot electronics dept, like the Electronic Depot. With Circuit City and Comp USa out of business they see a new way to make money on electronics. Best Buy is basically the only big electronic seller left in the country.

Who cares???

Get over it. Its a turntable. The stupid thing is not for sale anywhere except online I am aware of. In our stereo shops here they sell Rega and Marantz and Music Hall. Panasonic is found only at Best Buy and K-Mart now Home Dept. At least they will be available as the stereo shops don't want them.

Home Depot has an entire Home Theater and Audio section of the electronics division on its website. It sells 14 turntables, including the Technics line, as well as a selection of cables and connectors, speakers, and other gear.

I don't know how that compares to what is offered in store, and the prices/selection may not be very good. But, it doesn't seem out of character for Home Depot to offer the Technics decks when they have all this other stuff, too.

Next you will be ranting about how WAL MART has ruined the Human race.
Not the human race, but thousands of family-owned main street business and the communities they are a part of. And sticking the taxpayers for their health care costs by paying their employees little and encouraging them to take advantage of government entitlement programs. They sure lowered the quality of life where I live---killed two little towns. Main streets boarded up within two years of Wal Marts arrival. I go out of my way not to shop there and shop at independent/local places instead.
