View Full Version : Hunting Sgt. Pepper
Jonesy09 05-22-2009, 11:58 PM I've no clue what pressing/version/import/whatever to look for in trying to track down this album. I don't need the best quality or rarest version of this record. It won't be played back on a reference system so I don't need the highest quality pressing nor the most pristine condition record. I'm looking for this record for a Beatles enthusiast with a modest system.
Also, I'm looking for convienence. I don't really want to browse acres of thrift racks or multitudes of saturdays of garage sales. I see that Musicdirect has it but it's pending a new pressing. Anyone know what that's about? Any other sources for this record?
dokblues 05-23-2009, 01:20 AM I know there are new repressings coming out in September, Master pressings of all the Beatles Greats. As far as which Sgt. Peppers is best the original Capitol with the multicolor band label is a good one.
Try to find a MONO Capitol or Parlophone copy.

Yesterday I found on You Tube the newly remastered version of the "Sgt. Pepper" title track & the "Sgt. Pepper refrain" track. Amazing quality sound. Someone on the "inside" must have uploaded it.:thmbsp:

Sid Hartha 05-24-2009, 11:04 AM For the collector on a budget, look for a US Capitol that has the "purple dome" label, with "MASTERED BY CAPITOL" stamped into the deadwax. (Capitol upgraded their cutting equipment during the mid '70s, and that stamp is the indicator).
Sonically, these copies are much better than the original "Rainbow" label, but have no 'collector' value - so it's fairly easy to find a near-mint copy for cheap.
As far as the stereo version goes, I second Sid's recommendation. I had a "Rubber Soul" on the purple label that was far superior to my rainbow label copy. Better dynamics, more bandwidth and good pressing quality.
Jonesy09 05-24-2009, 09:47 PM Excellent info, thanks all.
baj81 05-31-2009, 12:07 AM hmmmm........interestingly though, most of my beatles vinyl says "mastered by capital" and I have a plethora of apple, orange and purple label stuff. Is it just the purple that's better?
KentTeffeteller 05-31-2009, 09:23 PM Best findable Stereo of this is a pre-barcode late 1970's UK Parlophone on a 2-box label. Those sound very fine and can be found in nice shape for under $20.
daza152 06-01-2009, 01:10 AM I to are wanting to buy a good copy of Sgt Peppers, but I know where to find it and what to look for in fact I have about 3 really good ones on my ebay watchlist for around 7 to 14 UK pounds,(which is less in US dollars) and like a previous post said get the Mono version and an original 1967 check that out:yes: I would have bought it myself but something else a little more harder to come by 'The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan original 1963:D Sgt Peppers can wait a week:yes:
Good Luck :thmbsp:
Daza.
It was John who said, if you want to hear Sgt Peppers, listen to the mono version. It was mixed by both Martin and the band.
240sx4u 06-01-2009, 08:36 AM If your willing to drop by and dig through my heaps, I may have a second copy. I am not sure.
KeninDC 06-01-2009, 08:47 AM Sid and Kent nail it.
A black and silver Parlophone stereo with either one or two "boxed" EMI labels is a keeper. The one box is from 1969 and still tube cut. The two box is from 1973.
