View Full Version : Songs with double meaning
chard306 05-24-2009, 01:00 AM I found out a song I like meant something different. Rosie by Jackson Browne is a song that says " Rosie....Looks like it's you and me again tonight". He was talking about his right hand....what other songs are out there with hidden double meaning?

soundboy 05-26-2009, 06:57 PM "Summer of 69" - Bryan Adams
It was not about the year 1969, as confirmed by Bryan Adams during an interview on Canadian Public Radio.
CallMeJoe 05-26-2009, 07:01 PM I read somewhere, ages ago, that Donovan's Mellow Yellow had nothing to do with smoking banana peels, as was widely assumed back then; it was actually an ode to his wife's favorite bright yellow "pleasure implement" (which was somewhat banana-like)...
stereofanboy 05-26-2009, 07:10 PM That Jackson Browne song that started this thread is one that I heard plenty of times when it was current, could even sing along, but never caught on until a couple of decades later. Still makes me laugh that I didn't catch it.

What do you think?
Clue: It's a music thread in a music forum...

i'm sitting here, working on my third brewski and it came to be, that the old thirties and forties blues song were loaded with double meaning, coded phrases, and descpitive scenery, revolving around sex, cheatin', money, and violence,
dust my broom, scratch my itch, squeeze my lemon, turn that lamp on, etc.
got a groundhog rootin' at my backdoor, does not involve a groundhog

I was thinking the same thing while reading this thread! In fact wasn't there a compilation years ago called "The Copulating Blues", or something to that effect, that had a lot of these collected together?
"You better come on in my kitchen... It's goin' to be raining outdoors!" Good thing there was no PMRC back then, huh?
And on that note...
Ice Cream Man - Van Halen
Which was an Elmore James tune long before VanHalen did it.:D

Old Blues is what came to my mind too, I thought she was going to get her teeth worked on.
Dinah Washington - 1948
I've got a dentist who's over seven feet tall
Yes, I've got a dentist who's over seven feet tall
Long John they call him, and he answers every call
Well, I went to Long Johns office and told him the pain was killin'
Yes, I went to Long Johns office and told him the pain was killin'
He told me not to worry, that my cavity just needed fillin'
He said, "When I start drillin', I'll have to give you novocaine"
He said, "Yes, when I start drillin', I'll have to give you novocaine"
Cause ev'ry woman just can't stand the pain"
He took out his trusted drill and he told me to open wide
He said he wouldn't hurt me but he'd fill that hole inside
Long John, Long John, you've got that golden touch
You thrill me when you drill me, and I need you very much
When he got through, he said "Baby, that will cost you ten"
Yes when he got through, he said "Baby, that will cost you ten
Six months from now, come back and see me again"
Say you're supposed to see your dentist 'bout twice a year, that's right
But I think I feel it throbbin', yes, I'll go back there tonight
Long John, Long John, don't ever move away
Say, I hope I keep on achin' so I can see you every day
