One of my favorites is Honey and the Moon by Joseph Arthur. It captures something about that time when love goes awry despite one's best intentions and you know that you have to end it.

I dunno, the lyrics sound like the definitive stalker song to me:

"You might wake up some morning to the sound of something moving past your window in the wind,
And if you're quick enough to rise you'll catch the fleeting glimpse of someone's fading shadow..."

What is REALLY interesting on that video, though, is what he says afterwards when introducing the next song. They DUG UP the already-buried body of Blaise Foley, to recover the pawn ticket from the pocket of the jacket he was buried in, in order to reclaim the guitar which he left to TVZ! :yikes:

Joan Baez-Diamonds and Rust. I've never heard anyone bare their soul the way this woman does on this song.

Quoted for truth!

There is another one like that --soul-baring, anyway, if a bit more graphic and modern-- done by Jewel on her eponymous LP. I don't remember the name, but it similarly reveals a lot of a woman's psyche, on a level you don't often hear.

The whole damn thing is beautiful, but it's the third verse that nails it:

From what I've seen, you're magnificent
You fight evil with all you do
Your every act is spectacular
It makes me lay here and love you

From what I hear, you are generous
You make sunshine and glory too
When you walk in things go luminous
It makes me lay here and love you

From what I know, you're terrified
You have mistrust running through you
Your smile is hiding something hurtful
It makes me lay here and love you

It makes me lay here and love you
I'm filled with violet and red and blue
I've got a feeling from what I do
That you might lay there and love me too

I've never been much of a Joan Baez fan, but when I heard Diamonds and rust back in 1975, I bought the album.

A lot of emotion in that one!

Just about anything from Swing Out Sister this decade. One thing she has done without fail is portray love as an emotion and not a physical act, which is admirable and honorable. I guess there are still dreamers out there...

It doesn't hurt that Corrine's voice is musical silk.

No Lonesome Tune
Townes Van Zandt

I ain't gonna sing no lonesome tune
Ah, babe, I'm a-comin' soon
I cannot believe I stayed so long away
But a man must look around
And you're the sweetest thing I've found
Your lost high roller's rollin' home today

My daddy said to me
"Son, it's hard as you will see
To find someone upon whom to rely"
In the kitchen mama sneezed
And he grinned big as you please
Said "bless you" and a tear come to his eye

I did decide that very day
That I would like to live that way
And now I know I just been wastin' time
It's with you that I should be
If you feel the same 'bout me
I'm headed home along the straightest line.

You know, you have a point a couple of those lines are creepy. This song was written/released in 1966, I doubt stalking was on anyone's drug addled mind here ... yeah looks different in the light of sadly different times today.

You might wake up some mornin'
To the sound of something moving past your window in the wind
And if you're quick enough to rise
You'll catch a fleeting glimpse of someone's fading shadow
Out on the new horizon
You may see the floating motion of a distant pair of wings
And if the sleep has left your ears
You might hear footsteps running through an open meadow

Don't be concerned, it will not harm you
It's only me pursuing somethin' I'm not sure of
Across my dreams with nets of wonder
I chase the bright elusive butterfly of love

You might have heard my footsteps
Echo softly in the distance through the canyons of your mind
I might have even called your name
As I ran searching after something to believe in
You might have seen me runnin'
Through the long-abandoned ruins of the dreams you left behind
If you remember something there
That glided past you followed close by heavy breathin'

Don't be concerned, it will not harm you
It's only me pursuing somethin' I'm not sure of
Across my dreams with nets of wonder
I chase the bright elusive butterfly of love

Across my dreams with nets of wonder
I chase the bright elusive butterfly of love

One Hundred Ways

Performed by James Ingram
Written and Produced by Quincy Jones

Compliment what she does
Send her roses just because
If it's violins she loves
Let them play
Dedicate her favorite song
And hold her closer all night long
Love her today
Find one hundred ways

Dont forget, there could be
An old lover in her memory
If you need her so much more
Why don't you say?
Maybe she has it in her mind
That she's just wasting her time
Ask her to stay
Find one hundred ways

Being cool won't help you keep a love warm
You'll just blow your only chance
Take the time to open up your heart
That's the secret of romance

Sacrifice if you care
Buy her some moonlight to wear
If it's one more star she wants
Go all the way
In your arms tonight, she'll reflect
That she owes you the sweetest of debts
If she wants to pay
Find one hundred ways

Love her today
Find one hundred ways

Todd Rundgren - A Dream Goes On Forever
I get tears in my eyes whenever I hear this song. Even now, re-reading the lyrics.

A million old soldiers will fade away
But a dream goes on forever
I’m left standing here, I’ve got nothing to say
All is silent within my dream

A thousand true loves will live and die
But a dream lives on forever
The days and the years will go streaking by
But the time has stopped in my dream

We all have our everyday hopes and fears
And you’ll find no exception in me
But that doesn’t get me through a sea of tears
Over life’s biggest tragedy

You’re so long ago and so far away
But my dream lives on forever
I guess I believe that I’ll see you one day
For without it there is no dream

You’re so far away and so long ago
But my dream lives on forever
And how much I loved you, you’ll never know
‘Til you join me within my dream

And how much I loved you, you’ll never know
‘Til you join me within my dream
