I'd like to get some real info about the famous model 500 amp, because some people say it's the best sounding amp ever and set's the 250M and 510 in his shadow.

i also heard that the amp is not very reliable?

1. IMHO, Marantz' own 8B and 9 were better sounding amps; and

2. We sold about 10 of the Model 500's at the dealership I worked at before the 510M replaced the 500: 8 of the 10 Model 500's came back for service after their output sections self-destructed. The 510M fixed this problem, but it didn't sound quite as good as the 500.

While I've had great luck with mid- to late-70s gear, mostly receivers and tuners, it seems to me that the 80s were when amps really matured. I have several or more mid-80s late-80s amps and they are excellent performers and compare well with current amps. (At least I am happy, and cannot hear a difference worth spending a LOT of money.)
That 'watt war' among receivers really pushed the techology.
