View Full Version : My Livingroom "Photo Gallery"
pioneervato 06-22-2009, 11:50 PM I bought myself a "man-cave" several months back and have been working on making it my own ever since. I just had new carpet put in a few days ago in part of the great room which is surrounded by 16" ceramic tile. I painted all of the walls and baseboard to my liking and then started to hang up some of my favorite B&W photographs I have printed over the years.
I dry mounted each of the photographs onto 100% 4-ply white rag-board and cut my own window mats using a C&H mat cutter and framed them in black wooden frames. The frames behind the sofa measure 18x24 and the prints behind the love seat and in the kitchen measure 16x20. My largest photo is 16x20 framed out to 22x28 using an oak frame I made several years ago and can be seen from the side in the third photo. (I will have to shoot that wall next and post it later.)
The original was in a natural finish and so I sanded the frame and painted it black with a satin finish. Turned out pretty good.
I will post some "closer-uppers" so you can get a better idea of what the subject matter is about.
Tapehead47 06-22-2009, 11:53 PM Classy, my man. Got a great looking room and stereo.
mulester7 06-23-2009, 12:12 AM .....the man-cave of PioneerVato....Looks Great!....I want to see those closer-uppers.....
chillwolf 06-23-2009, 09:04 AM Your mancave is looking good there PioneerVato. Has class but still looks comfortable and inviting! :thmbsp:
Looking forward to the closeups. The framing and matting looks nice.
SPL db 06-23-2009, 09:09 AM Very nice, love the colors that you chose. :thmbsp:

In/out of the kitchen !
Hoffius 06-23-2009, 01:50 PM Nice room. Looking forward to seeing the photographs up close.
rsfmotoman 06-23-2009, 09:52 PM Looks real nice.
What you did was the exact reason I got into photography several years ago...I wanted to put my own stuff on the walls instead of buying other people's art.
Good job.
meggy 06-23-2009, 09:58 PM Looks great. Uncluttered & appealing. Makes you want to go look at each one vs crowded walls of visual noise.
pioneervato 06-23-2009, 10:37 PM Thanks, guys, for your compliments. Now here are the close ups so that you can distinguish the photos. Some of these have been posted in this forum before in better detail.
chillwolf 06-24-2009, 06:08 AM Nice pics there! I like that they are all B&W.
Hoffius 06-24-2009, 08:59 AM Nice images, especially like the first one, the chair and table with cup. Great to see some nice black and white done in the old school way, shot on film and printed in a darkroom. I'm assuming this from something I saw you wrote on another post. Either way, great pics.
MAXZ28 06-24-2009, 09:07 AM Beautiful decor and outstanding prints....love it! :thmbsp: Definitely warm and inviting as others have mentioned.

Yes, all of the black and white prints on display were printed by me in the darkroom using fiber base paper. Digital black and white prints still do not convey (for me) the look of what I strive for but digital black and white can look pretty good using the right printer and paper combination.
ekmanning5 06-24-2009, 10:17 AM Hmmmm. One of those prints looks vaguely familiar. :scratch2:
Where have I seen it before? :D
pioneervato 06-24-2009, 10:32 AM Here are some shots of my Vinyl Record Room and my newly custom built (by me) computer desk along with some recent digital color prints hanging on the wall. The desk was built using 3/4" birch plywood and trimmed with poplar solid stock. I used full drawer extension hardware for the drawers.
Pic #1 : My new Epson R1400 Photo printer takes up the left side of my new desk and a small form factor computer sits to the right. I plan to upgrade my monitor to a 23" widescreen. I have my eye on a Samsung. :thmbsp:
Pic #2: A VPI RCM sits on a 4x2 Expedit book case connected to a 1x5 Expedit standing upright. The white storage bin is used to contain my new inner record sleeves and outer record cover sleeves. The Pioneer receiver and tape deck will be relocated to a small rack in front of the window.
Pic #3 : Double stack of 4x2 Expedits with vintage camera display on top, RtR tapes, records, photo books, and other miscellaneous stuff fill the bins for now.

Beats me! :D
Arkay 06-24-2009, 10:43 AM Very nice! Simple and clean, yet elegant enough, masculine, inviting and relaxing... practical and comfortable... just a really nice "mancave" kind of space. Well done! :thmbsp:

Interesting. I find inspiration in others' work. I therefore have almost nothing personal on display. Plus, by the time an image is done, although emotionally invested in it, I am sick of looking at it.
:lmao:
But this mancave it very interesting. Clean, elegant, mature and well executed. Hey, wait. That's what the guy above me says. You mention fiber based paper. Ilford?
Strawman 06-24-2009, 11:50 AM You've got some skills 'Vato. :thmbsp:

A couple of prints on Ilford MG, Agfa Classic, but mostly Oriental VC FB. I really liked the Agfa papers but they are kaput. I used to do a lot of printing on the older Oriental Seagull graded paper but now I am really liking the Oriental Variable Contrast paper.
You've got some skills 'Vato. :thmbsp:
Muchas Gracias, Strawman. I appreciate it.
subwoofwoof 07-13-2009, 03:02 PM I love looking at original artwork (signed prints are special as well). I want to hang only "original" work on my walls where I recently moved. I have some of my own work, some gifts and purchases. Once I get them all hung I'll post some photos. Maybe this thread will inspire me :D
shimniok 07-13-2009, 05:46 PM Real nice digs there!!
