View Full Version : Why not personal playlist threads?

I've been thinking about this.

Why not start your own play list thread? It would be a great way for us to get to know each other's personalities and preferences. I'd like to know individual's taste in music and could use them as a source for new titles if we had similar tastes.

And for me, keeping my own list would be a fun kind of diary (or log if you prefer) to look back on.

Has anyone tried this? Would you perceive me as an egomaniac if I started a "what Brett is listening to" thread?

Personally, I think the community would be enriched if some people made a habit of doing this.

Another question would be why am I asking instead of just starting a damn play list thread? But that can be a rhetorical question.

Go for it. I like reading and participating in the "vinyl only spin list" thread. Sometimes I see something interesting I didn't know about, sometimes I get inspired to play something I haven't played in a while, and I think it is just fun to see what others are listening to.

Will the fact that you are logging your tunes influence your choice of tunes?

You may find yourself putting on another Eno LP when you really wanted to listen to the extended version of "White Wedding."

You should, as they said in the 80s, "go for it."

I find the daily playlists threads pretty much fulfill this function and allow folks to interact more easily in this format. I guess I see personal playlists as more of a blogging activity.

It's not easier. If you want to know what I've been listing to, you'd have to parse all seven daily listening threads, the vinyl only spin list, today's jazz playlist, and the twang playlist (I have not posted to the prog rock or tape based play list yet). That's ten threads. Who with interest would have the time?

I guess I see personal playlists as more of a blogging activity.
Yes...good call. That's what it would be like.

Hhhmmm, would people then add to both their own personal playlist AND the daily (jazz, classical, etc...) lists, or just one?

I'm sure there is nothing to stop you from starting your own list/thread, as you describe. If you do, though, please put your name in the title, so if others follow suit, we don't get a hundred threads all titled, "My playlist". "Brett a's Playlist" would be easier to follow. and as people decided they shared (or didn't) your tastes, they could decide easily if they want to click on and read the latest posts. If enough people started doing this, maybe it would turn into a new forum, even. It does seem a lot like what a blog is for, though!

[I've thought about an audio blog... I'd call it "Arkay-ology" (tag line something like "digging into old audio in Hong Kong"). Besides going into topics I don't (or rarely) talk about here, it would save server space for AK if I put some of the l-o-n-g-e-r posts on it, and just linked to them from here! But since it isn't a real priority, I never get started on it...]

I like it Brett A!!!

I like to post tunes I like that come on the radio from time to time but usually get a bunch of un-happy posts and PM's... something odd about that!!

I think it would be interesting but my main reason for posting in a playlist thread is to see everyone else's posts and discover new music or re-discover old. You wouldn't see that in your own personal thread since you'd be the only one posting in there for the most part. But WTH.

Last.fm is good for recent playlists if it's music on the PC, but not so great for LPs...

Hmmmm. I'd never been to last.FM. I don't often listen to music when the computer is on. Listening is pretty much limited to sitting in the sweet spot, focussed, or in the car on CD.

This is a good question. I was just thinking about this this morning. There is something to be said about all gathering around the same campfire. But the daily play list threads have become so diffuse (I think there's 14 of them) there's not a whole lot of integrity there anyway.

It does seem a lot like what a blog is for, though!

I hate to admit it, but I'm not clear on why people see such an obvious difference between blogging and posting a thread here at AK. I don't know anything about blogging other than assuming its people keeping an on-line diary. I wouldn't know how to go about doing that if i wanted to. Where does a person blog, anyway?
