Picked this up at the GW today out of sheer curiosity. I never heard of using 35 mm film to record music. This record is absolutely amazing. It's like something from Telarc but from 1961. Kind of a Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court thing. There was another Enoch Light record (not 35 mm) I passed on I'm going back for. Anybody have any of these or heard this one?

mmm-hmmm. The early Command recordings were noted for their cover art, which was much-imitated.

Wow. Cool links. I think I have a new label to collect. I see there's a few other 35 MM titles to watch for.

The big feature of 35 mm film-based audio "tape" was to use sprocket drive to eliminate wow/flutter problems. A few other labels did use film in the 1960s.

The Enoch Light 35MM film LP's I have are very impressive for demonstrating vinyl but for me the tunes aren't too exciting.

I like the Command Records Enoch Light stuff. Sure it's schlocky or schmaltzy or whatever the correct term is but it's great background music to play on an old tube console while cooking dinner or tinkering with an audio project. Rack about 4 or 5 up on the changer and you've got an hour and a half before you need to think about flipping that stack.

My favorites are the 'Reeds and Percussion' and 'Big Band Bossa Nova'.

Recordings on 35mm film were GREAT quality. I initially collected albums like this for a wall I have a dozen or so on display that I rotate out, but kept looking for them for the sound quality.

Thanks for those links. Now I know which ones I need to look for.

Something tells me Scuzzer and I have very similar collections

Everest and Mercury were also famous for using the 35mm format for recording in the late 50's and early 60's - almost no tape hiss compared to regular magnetic tape. If you can find a good Everest pressing or a remastering, prepare to be astounded by the sound.

More recently, I have heard that Billy Corgan is enamored with 35mm recording, but I'm not sure if any of the Smashing Pumpkins or his solo records actually used it.

I forgot to add that my favorite reference when looking at this kind of stuff is the space age pop site here:

More information than you'd ever want to know about this goofy, off-beat but incredibly fun music.
