I picked up this unusual King Pleasure 78 yesterday. It appears to be a test pressing of some sort. It is pressed on shellac, so it is definitely not an acetate.
The A-Side is the Prestige recording of "Moody's Mood For Love," but the flipside is particularly curious. On the original 78 (Prestige 924), the B-side is "Exclamation Blues." As far as I can determine, "Great Day in the Morning" has never been issued (!!). It's not listed in any discography, and I've never before heard this recording.
According to http://home.earthlink.net/~v1tiger/kpleasure.html, "In October [1953] the year old "Moody's Mood For Love" appears in Los Angeles on many bootleg copies of the original. It is stated that there is no federal law against the bootlegging of records, and local law makes it only a misdemeanor charge for being found guilty of counterfeiting records." Could this be a bootleg or bootleg test pressing? The fidelity is not as good as on the Prestige record, which would support that argument. It's also pressed slightly off-center on the A-side.
The matrices in the runoff area are R-791 and R-792. On the Prestige 78, the matrix is PRES-330.
What the heck is this thing??
