I picked this 10" LP up yesterday in the 99 cent bin of my local used record shop. American Songs in German for the OSS (http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/discography/index.jsp?pid=3576&aid=56324#review) by Marlene Dietrich. Anyone else have this one? These are re-recorded versions of songs she sang during WWII, which were used as propaganda on the Germans. If you ever wondered what "The surrey with the fringe on top" sung in German sounds like, this is the disc you want. I found this cover image on the web. My copy is in much nicer condition.

Yeah, I have that one on a 12" disc. Marlene Dietrich is quite a personality, but her singing is strictly in the field trip zone for me. In other words, historically it is nice to hear her and learn about her...but I don't want to hear her very often. There are plenty of other old-timer gals who get ALOT of play at our house (Mildred Bailey, Ethel Waters, Annette Hanshaw, etc.), but poor Marlene just doesn't translate for modern enjoyment. Paul Robeson has a similar problem: cool voice but not precisely relaxing.
