View Full Version : Richard Thompson with Loudon Wainwright @ the ARK
olson_jr 07-09-2009, 04:58 PM This looks like it will be an interesting evening of entertainment, , it is at the Michigan Theater, not at the Ark!
Loud & Rich is the duo of Loudon Wainwright III and Richard Thompson. Longtime friends and occasional collaborators, they have begun their first-ever North American tour together, and they're bringing it to the Michigan Theater on Tuesday, October 27.
Both these musicians are a sure bet for a memorable evening of incredible music. Together in concert, they're going to create a folk classic!
Tickets will go on sale for Loud & Rich on Saturday, July 11.
tentoze 07-09-2009, 05:53 PM That should be one hell of a show.
mhardy6647 07-09-2009, 06:29 PM It's a good thing I thought for a minute before I clicked on this thread. I was thinking of Richard Thomas.
"Good night, John-Boy!"
"Good night, Dead Skunk."
sorry...
jmathers 07-09-2009, 06:58 PM Seen both folks - obviously, several folks in SMAC have seen Richard live a few times....but Loudon is really not to be missed - a true songwriter's songwriter. He used to do some work for NPR on various timely topics - Tanya Harding's skating controversy comes to mind.
If you don't have LW's live collection "Career Moves," recorded at the infamous Bottom Line at perhaps the height of his career (difficult to pin down since he's worked for years, but for me this was IT), you're missing out.
This show may be a good substitute for the CD though. Wonder if Richard will bring his Lowdon guitar?
Jeff
dmax99 07-09-2009, 07:25 PM Looks like I'll be on the phone Sat. morning.
RichPA 07-09-2009, 07:28 PM Sounds wonderful, I'm jealous of those who get to see them. Saw RT a year or so ago, it was great.
dmax99 07-09-2009, 07:34 PM I saw him last year as well, he's on my not to be missed list.
Andyman 07-09-2009, 07:53 PM An evening of "Dead Skunk in the Middle of the Road" ??? :D
Just kidding. That RT concert a few years back at Wayne State is one of my top shows ever; he was amazing!!
Drybasement 07-10-2009, 09:09 PM I'll be ready at the computer come 10:00 AM. Since I already had a Ticketbastard account (McCoy Tyner) it should go pretty smooth. Web page is preloaded and I'm already logged in. One click and I'm ordering.

Just discovered you can save on the ticketmaster fees by calling the Michigan Union Ticket office at 734-763-tkts.
Drybasement 07-11-2009, 10:18 AM David told me last night that these were internet only ticket sales. Anyway, it's too late as I already got them online. And the bastard fees totaled $25 for two tickets those lowsy bastards.
Mainfloor center row J. On the aisle, seats 110 and 111. Seating numbers for the center section start at 101 and work right to 111.
olson_jr 07-11-2009, 10:20 AM Funny, I believe she said I was on row J on the aisle on the other side!

Actually I paid $141 for two tickets delivered sso I don't know if this actually saved me anything??
Drybasement 07-11-2009, 10:23 AM Total cost for me was $153.90.
Andyman 07-11-2009, 10:28 AM Total cost for me was $153.90.
Damn....what's that $60 a pop??
I guess I need to get out more, or not :D
dmax99 07-11-2009, 10:40 AM Well we certainly are spoiled by ticket prices at the Ark,Ouch!

Times have changed, I don't think that you will ever have a chance to see The Allman Brothers Band, Elvin Bishop twice in the same day, Luther Allison, Asleep at the Wheel, Carl Perkins, Chubby Checker, John Prine, and Willy Dixon for free again!
Andyman 07-11-2009, 12:09 PM :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:
Well, there was a $8.00 or so general admission, and that wasn't all in one day.
George Thorogood too and I can recall if I was at the Humble Pie riot or not :D
But my concert going has really hit the skids since I left Milwaukee in '81.

Got the tickets today, Center row J seats 101 and 102.
Drybasement 07-15-2009, 05:14 PM :thmbsp:
See you then.
For Ark events during the week, David and I usually meet at Arbor Brewing around 6 pm. Since this is at the Michigan Theater parking in the ramp across from Arbor Brewing would mean a fairly long walk. Not sure what we'll end up doing but you're more than welcome to join us. :D
olson_jr 07-17-2009, 07:31 AM Darren , thanks for the invite!
BTW, the walk from Arbor Brewing to the Michigan Theater is 0.39 miles, maybe 0.42 if you've had two Sacred Cows! Even I can do that!
Drybasement 07-17-2009, 09:07 AM Yeah, it's not that far and it may not be a bad idea parking there. The Michigan Theater seats 1700 people so I would imagine the ramp close to the theater just off Liberty will be mighty full. And the exodus afterwards quite congested.
dnewma04 07-19-2009, 10:02 PM Too bad, I didn't check this forum and in a while. I may have sprung for tickets to this show.
zoeinterloper 08-16-2009, 12:12 AM Darren , thanks for the invite!

So here's the thing... I'm on the phone, talking with the young lady at the student union again and she interrupts me and says how many tickets do you want? I say, just two. She says, wait a minute... comes back and asks me if row b, center section would be ok, just off the left isle??? I said, excuse me, but that would be more than OK! On the down side she won't be showing up to make good use of the second ticket. I tried. So it goes.
Well, count me in for one or three of those most sacred of cows and another great night of music. What do ya say, let's plan on meeting at the AA brewery for a little dining and drink and a short brisk walk? It should be good fall weather by then. I'm looking forward to it.
Happy (concert) Listening! :beatnik:
Drybasement 08-16-2009, 12:43 PM Sounds good to me Rob. I'll be there around 6 pm. See you then!
olson_jr 10-27-2009, 05:54 AM Just got a note from the Ark informing me that either 'Great' or 'Fabulous' seats have now been released for tonights show? Must not be selling quite as well as hoped for, which is interesting as we saw Emmylou Harris there last Friday and there were few empty seats.
jmathers 11-16-2009, 05:13 PM I was hoping for some reviews on this show. Anyone actually go or did you all chicken out at the last minute?
What say you?
Jeff
BTW drug out my copy of Loudon's "I'm Alright" vinyl and guess who plays guitar on the album? Yep, Richard Thompson. This album is from 1985. So the collaboration has a history.
A great anti-relationship, anti-woman album - as Allyson can attest to:-(
I saw that show about 3 weeks ago here in Pittsburgh, PA. Loudon was decent, tho he seemed a bit tired. RT played a superb acoustic set - he is in the top tier of guitarists, all time, IMHO. The numbers that they played together were fun.
dmax99 11-16-2009, 09:36 PM I thought Loudon was a hoot, quite entertaining. That was my first experience with his stuff, would I go see him again? Yes.That was my second time seeing RT,simply mesmerizing.Guitar skills seldom seen, put him on the not to be missed list.I would also agree that they work well together. Of course this was on top of dinner & sacred cow(s) at you know where!
jmathers 11-17-2009, 11:42 AM Cool guys thanks for the reviews. Glad it was a good show for you both.
Jeff

Jeff,
Loudon is still humorous & acerbic. Richard might actually be getting better on guitar, or I just notice more, either way very entertaining show.
For a good review and some pictures check this link http://www.annarbor.com/entertainment/loud-rich-review/
After meeting Drybasement, Dmax99, Zoeinterloper and Jim E. my wife now understands why I like SMAC events. I believe her words were, "these guys are all so nice... and all so NORMAL." I guess she had preconcieved ideas about folks that are into music and equipment!

I wonder where she got that idea?:scratch2:
dnewma04 11-17-2009, 07:39 PM Normal? was she drunk?
