View Full Version : Dual 704
Rygen 07-15-2009, 03:54 PM I scored one of these today. Traded a friend of mine some IT equipment I had laying around for it. Don't know much about it, cept I wanted to try an alternative to the SL-J3 I have (plus my 14 yr old has been begging me for the linear for his system and I gave in).
Looks to be in good shape. I got manuals, but they are in german, so I have to learn how to configure this thing. There was nothing to configure on the linear.
I put it together, and it sounds great!!!

kermit z 07-15-2009, 04:19 PM That is a very sharpe looking table. Congrates :)
Rygen 07-15-2009, 04:22 PM Thanks guys. It has the stock rca wires/plugs. I read they need changed out.
kermit z 07-15-2009, 04:43 PM Most tables of that vintage would benefit from changing the interconnects. I did with my Dual 1209 which came with the original cables from 1971.
bryndildaddy 07-15-2009, 05:20 PM That's a very nice table - congrats! I've really been wanting to switch out the interconnects on my CS 5000, but they're hard wired, as well. Since replacement seems less than casual, I've been putting that off 'til my next maintenance visit to the shop.
elcoholic 07-15-2009, 06:05 PM I did my CS5000 about a year ago. It wasn't too hairy.
Rygen 07-15-2009, 06:11 PM There is a small removable panel underneith, but no access to RCA plugs. So looks like they are hard wired. I will have to find a way to get to it with some good cables. I'm also thinking a LM30 would be a nice upgrade to the LM10 it came with.
rushfan 07-15-2009, 08:40 PM That looks like a fine turntable. I'm new to the world of Dual tables but I am impressed so far. The Dual/Ortofon combo seems to be a match made in heaven. Like you, I'd like to change my table's RCA cables but am in no hurry to do so.
OvenMaster 07-16-2009, 12:52 AM Nice haul. That Ortofon LM10 is from 1980 - 1986... you may wish to consider replacing that stylus with an OM10 or 20... no telling if the inner suspension has crapped out after that long a time. The cart shell will accept the newer stylus with no problems.

Rygen 07-16-2009, 08:50 AM The guy I bought it from said the stylus is 2 years old. Though I plan to replace both the cartridge and the stylus very soon. Any suggestions? I read the LM30 is good, but I can't seem to source one.

The service manual can be found on Vinyl Engine. Removing the base is fairly straight forward, there's this tiny rod in the arm lift mechanism that would be easy to misplace.

I bought mine from the Good Guys and it came with an upgraded HOMC Ortophon. I replaced it when I recabled with the currently produced equivalent MC3 Turbo. They sound great together. The fine line contact stylus does a good job w/ used vinyl.
Rygen 07-16-2009, 09:21 PM Thanks.
Got the service manual. Good Guys?
elcoholic 07-17-2009, 09:29 AM The Good Guys was a medium-box west coast electronics chain with 71 stores ultimately bought out by CompUSA and folded in 2006. IMHO way better than Best Buy or Circuit City as in addition to the mainstream, they carried some of better brands like Mitsu TVs, Denon, B&O, B&W, Polk, Yamaha, Dual ...
Rygen 07-17-2009, 06:26 PM Ah! Didn't know that. I found a Shure m97xe brand new, with free shipping for $57 bucks. So I ordered that and will give it a go with this table.
Rygen 07-22-2009, 07:19 PM Just got my Shure M97xE. Going to try it out over the next couple of days. Hoping this improves the sound. Though I read this particular Shure needs a proper break in.
jlovda 07-25-2009, 05:57 PM I also just acquired a 704 off ebay about a week ago. Mine came with a Shure V-15 Type III. I wanted a direct drive TT. This model is 99% manual. At the end of the record, the tonearm just rises up off the vinyl. It does not return to its rest. The only problem I had was that the special cylindrical neon strobe lamp was dead (cracked glass). I tack soldered an old NE-2 bulb I had into the cavity. It's a little dim and the strobe line is fuzzy but it does work!
