A friend of mine that just purchased two 1 GB memory cards. Seriously IMO their is no way someone should need that much space just for pictures. My question is how much memory do you think you could get by with? I say I could get by with 128, 256, and maybe a 512 card if I was going take short videos.

For normal ( non vacation ) purposes where you can easily upload any photos I don't see the need for anything bigger than a 256 meg card.

512K should be more than you'll ever need. I shoot how-to auto tech articles or car events heavy on images at the highest res and never tax it.

I have a 128mb and can take 93 pics at full resolution. 900+ if i take them in the smallest res.

Nobody mentioned the resolution or file type of the images that will be stored, and obviously, that would make a big difference on how much storage would be considered "enough". While 256Mb might be enough for someone with a 3mp camera that shoots .jpegs, I can fill one up pretty quickly with my 4mp, shooting RAW files. I used up a 256 card last night, taking pictures of my son riding his bicycle. Action shots, though --- figured half of them were likely duds, so I kept clicking away.

My personal experience has been that the next-larger memory card than the one I have in the camera at any given time, would be the ideal size :D.

With one of the newer 6 or 8 megapixel cameras, I think 512mb would be about the smallest I'd even consider. Maybe 256mb for a 3 or 4 MP camera.

I use a 5 megpixel Canon and the highest resolution under RAW (about 2200 X 2200) for work and a 512 card is plenty. Anything published in a magazine is typically 300 dpi (dots per inch) and on the Net is 72--90 dpi.

Even the pros shooting Nextel Cup action for me don't use the RAW setting -- too much of a pain to download, send via email, or tranfer to disk. Now, if we're doing a 2-page photo spread of a car in a studio with lights, etc. then RAW comes into action.

Why Joe Consumer needs a 6--8 megapixel camera is beyond me. Spend the money on a better lense, not more pixels.

Well, our Olympus D-400 with its 1.3 megapixel res shoots all our auction pics. I get 72 @ med resolution on a 16 mB Smartmedia.

That's probably all the real world needs. Especially for pedestrian pics.

Why these folks drop hundreds of bucks to shot "snapshots" of Suzy's B-day or Johnny's Graduation, complete with trees growing out of their heads, is a constant source of amusement to me.

They must be the same buffoons with the flashes popping at all those sporting events :D

I still use the 16 meg that came with my camera. I also have about 10 8 meg cards that I use for kiddie pics

Well with my D70 and a 256Mb card I only get 23pics at max resolution and lossless recording. 900 or so at the minimum settings. Maybe I should pickup a 512 or 1Gig.

Actually, My wife is semi-serious about her photography and has outgrown her 2.2 MP Cannon. She needs at least 2x that to meet the requirements of being able to sell her photos, at least for one place.

How is this relevant? She fills her 3 128 MB cards in a day, 2 at the outside easy. 1GB would be barely adequate and she would probably need 2 to get by with a bigger camera. Nothing makes her madder than having the camera tell her the card is full just when she's taking shots.

Does the average consumer need that level? I doubt it. But this is America, where bigger is better!
