View Full Version : Is a 15 tube any good?
spaceman 07-24-2009, 05:51 PM I know where I can get a REALLY old Admiral floor radio, probably from the 40s or 50s, for not too much money. It's tough to tell what all the tubes are in it, lots of dust, but I pulled an output (very discreetly, lol), & it was marked 15, with Sylvania's logo on the base. I'm looking at the RCA manual now, & it says sharp-cutoff pentode, discontinued, with a short paragraph of specs. Anyone messed with these before, and did you like them? :scratch2: TIA
Thespeakerdude8 07-24-2009, 06:37 PM it has to do with the RF section of the raidio, not the power section. More common output tubes would be a 42, 45, 50, 2A3, 6F6, 6V6 etc. Since the type 15 uses a 2.5v filament, you should be looking for 2A3's or 45's or something.
Sandy G 07-24-2009, 06:57 PM I would hazard a guess that it is prolly OK...Unless you're a "Golden Ear", going for the last 1/10 of fidelity, & sound, most old tubes do fine...

That's what I was starting to figure out, lol. They look a lot like a KT66, is why I thought I pulled a power tube. I'm really curious what the power tubes in it are now, but not too sure it's a good investment yet at $50. Maybe if I can talk them down on price (doubtful), it'll even out the cab home. :scratch2:
Thespeakerdude8 07-24-2009, 09:34 PM admiral's aren't worth a ton, typically low end consoles, but if she's in nice shape its worth $50.
BTW, REALLY old would be more like 1920's/1930's radios :thmbsp: However, if it has 2.5v tubes, I would hazard a guess it is older tan 1940's, probably a 30's set.
EDIT: I just re-read the datasheet, the 15 RF pentode uses a 2.0v filament, and was designed for battery sets. Might be interesting, but I don't think you'll find any rare output tubes now.
toxcrusadr 07-24-2009, 10:27 PM Probably a farm radio then. Is the cabinet in poor shape? Even if it had valuable tubes, a nice radio should be saved as a radio unless it's beyond repair.
spaceman 07-24-2009, 11:22 PM Well, I ended up back there, since I had to pass it anyways, & I was confuzled, it's really a Philco. This time, a store worker gave me a hassle about looking inside it, so I didn't get to see what other tubes it has. :sigh: It irritated me a bit at first, but if he thought I might be pocketing parts, he'd be right to say something, so I just let it go. I think I'll try to catch it on a sale day, the cabinet is pretty nice. :smoke:
