View Full Version : Buying a new mat
ZAZ13 07-29-2009, 06:17 PM Felt or rubber?
Who should I buy it from?
The one I have is a little bent, how can I guarantee the new one won't get folded in half in the mail?

looky heeyah (http://www.google.com/search?q=turntable+mats&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a).
ZAZ13 07-29-2009, 06:29 PM Yeah, thanks but that does not help at all. I checked google first and after I sifted through the mountain of mats and widely varying prices, I came here for a little narrowing.
markd51 07-29-2009, 06:57 PM ZAZ, Looking at the pics you showed earlier, It looked to me, that that Platter Mat on your Table, sits in a recess in the Platter itself? Am I correct?
I'm thinking if this is then the case, that perhaps just any Mat off the shelf may not correctly fit your Platter? The outside diameter of the needed Mat then would either have to be presicely exact, or you're going to wind up maybe having to "trim to fit"?
Please let us know which? Mark

Yep, I am looking for a mat as well and found all the stuff on google. I'd like to hear from some folks about what mats they've tried and their impressions. Has anyone ever used Sorbathane (SP)?
cactuscowboy 07-29-2009, 07:45 PM I can't imagine using a felt mat. Wouldn't that be a horrible dust collector and prone to building static electricity?
I've always used the rubber mats that came with my turntables. If I needed a replacement, I'd definitely go with rubber.
djnagle 07-29-2009, 09:52 PM I just found Sorbathane sheets 1/8" x 12" x 12" for 13 bucks. My platter surface is only 11.75" around so I think I will buy one of these and cut it round.
RickB 07-29-2009, 10:31 PM Sorbothane kills all the life from the music...heard the Audioquest one and the one from Oracle...
Herbie's Way Excellent Turntable Mat is the best bang for the buck I've found, I like it on my Linn, on my Micro Seki, and when I get it rebuilt I am sure to try it on my Rek-O-Kut Rondine....
I like it more than the stock Linn felt mat and the Ringmat 330 MkII XLR....and more than the Fulton Kinetic Barrier...
The Non-Felt type mats may damage vinyl should you fall asleep or pass out while listening...
Felt is a pretty safe bet...but, what's your turntable and what's your budget?

oh. please forgive me.:D
markd51 07-29-2009, 10:57 PM RickB I think has said it pretty well.
I have an old AQ Sorbo Mat laying around here somewhere, still in its jacket, and while it seemed to be an improvement over some old, rock hard rubber mat, and probably does as it says, kills some resonance, maybe like others have found, and noted, that it might kill things a bit too much!?
As Rick says, and as others have found as well, Herbies seems to be making many cool, and good products, and I have dealt with him in the past, buying Tube Dampers from him. He's a really good guy to deal with, and others all say the same about him.
And, herbie may possibly the only one instance whom I can think of, that could possibly make a custom diameter, and thickness Mat for a customer.
I never asked him such, but I do know he makes varying thicknesses of his way excellent mat. Very possble as well, that he'd make a custom diameter for a customer, but there may be an exclusion, that his 30 day money back guarantee would not apply to such a custom "one off" order?
There's been some written here about herbie's stuff, and can no doubt be found in the archives. Mark
