I picked up a Sony TT today that is from the mid-80s. It came with a Grado MG cart. I can't find any information about this Grado. Can anybody help?
Thanks
Old John

On the stylus assembly there are two dots, can you see what color they are? Also on the back section on the top of the cartridge body should be a date stamped somewhere in that area. It will tell you the date it was made.

The stamp is L84...can't find colored dots. Does the stylus need to be removed to find them?

The all one piece MG was reviewed a few times by different folks. Google it and you will find some info.

IIRC that cartridge is the mid-80s equivalent to the current Silver and is one of the top models of their standard "Prestige" lineup. That makes it a very good cartridge, indeed.

No you don't have to remove the stylus. The dots are on either side of the stylus assembly. It's where the tool that's used to remove the stylus hooks on.

If I understand, those two dots appear to be silver.

You have a winner. from the date code i'd say that MG was made some time in December 84

I have a Grado MG on the Thorens I just picked up. The dots look like they are the same brown color as the front part of the cartridge. The metal sides are gold, which leads me to believe it's the old version of what is now the Prestige Gold. I have a Grado Prestige Silver on my AR XA and it sounds a little better. But could be that the older one and Thorens have been stored for years before I got my hands on it.

Oh, also has the hum on the Thorens a little more pronounced than the newer Silver on my AR (with original tonearm).
