Willy DeVille passed away of pancreatic cancer this morning. Willy first gained notoriety fronting Mink DeVille, one of the house bands at CBGB’s in the mid 70’s. Willy’s music combined soul, rock, Latin, Cajun, even French cabaret. He worked at one time or another with Jack Nitzche, Dr. John, Mark Knophler, Doc Pumus, Allen Toussaint and many more. He was a hugely talented singer and songwriter and I will miss him tremendously. If you are unaware of his music I highly recommend picking up The Mink DeVille album: Le Chat Bleu.
RIP Willy!
